It's no wonder Manchester City have made Savinho their first signing of the summer, snapping him up from sister team Troyes, who had loaned him to Girona.

The 20-year-old has become the first player to climb all the way to the top of the City Football Group pyramid.

Having ended last season with 11 goals and 10 assists for Girona, he will be determined to prove that he's here to stay.

RE Jay 08:40 BST - LFC fan here too, makes you think why Manchester United wanted Leny Yoro when he clearly wanted to go Madrid. And he’s an 18-year-old from the French league, we all know the Premier League is a much tougher league so he may well struggle. Maybe LFC think Jarell Quansah is better and Yoro is not worth the money. Look at United's previous signings - how many have worked out? I wouldn’t be worried!

Strong on the ball and able to change direction in a second fraction, Savinho was originally registered at third-division club Troyes, but never featured for the French side. Instead, he was sent on loan to PSV Eindhoven.

An early injury, however, stalled his progression and, combined with reduced minutes after that, made it impossible for him to shine in the Eredivisie.

Girona had watched him in the 2023 Under-20 World Cup and decided he was worth the bet, although it was not easy to convince Michel at first as he had asked for an experienced winger.

"Savinho didn't have much senior football under his belt; he had been sidelined at PSV, played for the reserves, but not as starter, so that was a difficult sell," said Carcel.

He had to hit the ground running and so he did, imposing himself from the first moment he arrived in Catalonia. He wasn't allowed to switch off for a minute. He simply couldn't.

"You have the potential to finish this season with 10 goals and 20 assists, so do it," Michel told him during half-time in a match in which he had already scored and assisted once.

It certainly won't get any easier for Savinho under Guardiola.

He doesn't mind. He's living his dream.

RE: "LFC Fan" Jay (08:40 BST) - Leny Yoro moved to Man Utd for the money and guaranteed game time. £52m and £150k-a-week wages for an 18 year old from the French league, who only had 1 year left on his contract, would be crazy for Liverpool. Especially when we've already got four international centre-backs.

Girona manager Michel is not one to get carried away too easily.

He couldn't resist the temptation, however, after watching Savinho train for the first time during pre-season last year, immediately calling sporting director Quique Carcel aside.

"We're going to finish in the top eight," he told Carcel, who tried, in vain, to bring him back down to earth. "Are you crazy or what?" As it would turn out, Michel could not have got it more right.

Such was Savinho's impact at the Montilivi stadium that Michel's prediction wasn't bold enough - as Girona fought for the La Liga title until the very end. They finished in third place - behind only Real Madrid and Barcelona - and qualified for the Champions League. It was the best campaign in the club's 93-year history.

Much of the credit for this was given to their electrifying winger.

In the space of a year, Savinho went from a player struggling in PSV Eindhoven reserves to a breakout star in Spain, making his Brazil debut against England at Wembley.

So Liverpool thought Leny Yoro only wanted to sign for Madrid and so pulled out of trying to sign him. And now I’m looking at him in a Manchester United top. I really would’ve preferred if they’d just stayed quiet or said they only want players committed to signing for Liverpool. Cue Gary Neville et al endlessly banging on about it. Well done lads, NOT.

  7. Man City sign Brazil winger Savinho for £30.8mpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 19 July

    Manchester City

As mentioned earlier, Manchester City signed Brazil winger Savinho on Thursday from French side Troyes in a deal worth 40m euros (£30.8m).

The 20-year-old, who has signed a contract until 2029, starred on loan at Girona last season as they finished third in La Liga.

Both Girona and Troyes are part of the City Football Group.

Savinho said City are currently the "best team in the world" and that he is excited to work under manager Pep Guardiola, who he called "one of the greatest coaches ever".

On why Manchester City is the right club for him, Savinho said: "[Because of] everything I've seen today. I just got here this morning and I turned to my agent and stepfather and said, 'there was no way I was going to turn down Manchester City'.

"I'm a Brazilian who likes to play on the front foot, to be happy, to play joyful football.

"I like playing one against one, making assists, scoring goals too, and helping the team. My main characteristic, what I like the most, is being happy and getting fans up off their seats."

  8. Bradford-born Greenwood's potential Valley Parade bowpublished at 08:27 British Summer Time 19 July

Mason Greenwood's new side Marseille face Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on 3 August at Bradford City's Valley Parade, with the Stadium of Light unavailable because of renovation work.

Greenwood was born in Bradford and it could be his first game back in England since he was arrested in January 2022 following allegations surrounding material which was published online.

Serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

  9. Man Utd include sizeable sell-on clause in Greenwood dealpublished at 08:23 British Summer Time 19 July

Mason Greenwood was a product of Manchester United's academy but has not played for the Premier League club since January 2022 and was on loan at Getafe last season.

Serious charges against the 22-year-old former England forward, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023.

The French club were criticised by the Marseille mayor after their intention to sign Greenwood was made public.

He made his competitive senior debut for United in 2019 as a substitute against Paris St-Germain in the Champions League and scored 35 goals in 129 appearances, winning his only England cap in 2020.

In August 2023, United said Greenwood would leave the club by mutual agreement after a six-month internal investigation into his conduct.

He joined La Liga side Getafe the following month, where he scored 10 goals and made six assists in 36 appearances to revive his career.

United, who wished Greenwood well on their website, have also included a sizeable sell-on clause in their £26.6m deal with Marseille.

So Manchester United have completed two big deals in the summer transfer window so far, but it seems the new regime at Old Trafford, led by part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is just getting started.

The i reports that the next "priority signing" is Paris St-Germain's 23-year-old Uruguay midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

  12. 'The faith placed in Yoro and Zirkzee is immense'published at 07:39 British Summer Time 19 July

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

There are some familiar noises coming out of Old Trafford in the wake of this transfer.

Leny Yoro was linked with some major European clubs, including Real Madrid, and his quote in the statement accompanying the signing about United having a "clear plan" for his development and the "care" shown for the teenager and his family seemed pointed.

It is not unusual for United - or anyone else for that matter - to stress the positives around a new arrival.

But there is an underlying theme. In Raphael Varane - and more particularly Anthony Martial - United are replacing older, injury-prone, underperforming players, with youngsters of verve, energy and promise.

United's new ownership structure want the club to feel like that, a shedding of its skin as part of a conviction better times are ahead.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is continuing to deliver but the time was always going to come when his new outlook would be tested. The faith placed in Yoro and fellow new signing Joshua Zirkzee is immense. It won't be long before we discover whether the faith is justified and this is going to be a different United, or just more of the same with different wrapping paper.

  13. One 'exciting young defender' arrives at Old Trafford, could De Ligt be next?published at 07:31 British Summer Time 19 July

It is fair to say that Leny Yoro arrives at Old Trafford with plenty of potential, but without the experience to suggest he would be ready to immediately slot into the starting line-up.

However, the significance of his arrival is not lost on Manchester United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth, who sealed the deal ahead of rivals Liverpool and the likes of Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain.

"Leny is one of the most exciting young defenders in world football; he possesses every attribute needed to develop into a top-class centre-back," said Ashworth of the 18-year-old Frenchman.

Yoro's signing is part of a defensive reshuffle at Old Trafford.

United had lodged two bids with Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite earlier in the summer, but both were rejected. In addition, Ashworth and his team have been negotiating with Bayern Munich for their Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Raphael Varane left the club at the end of the season and there are doubts over the future of Sweden's Victor Lindelof, whose contract expires next year.

Harry Maguire was the subject of bids from rival Premier League clubs last summer but opted to remain at Old Trafford and eventually made 22 Premier League appearances.

  14. 'Incredible honour' - Yoro on Man Utd movepublished at 07:21 British Summer Time 19 July

New Manchester United signing Leny Yoro, 18, made 44 appearances in all competitions for Ligue 1 side Lille, who reached the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League before being knocked out on penalties by Aston Villa.

Yoro's arrival follows United's recent signing of forward Joshua Zirkzee, 23, in a £36.5m deal from Italian side Bologna and comes during a summer in which the club have been trying to bring in a central defender.

"Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honour," said Yoro.

"Since my first conversations with the club, they set out a clear plan for how I can develop in Manchester as part of this exciting project, and showed a lot of care for me and my family.

"I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and feel it can be the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions, together with my new team-mates. I cannot wait to get started."

  15. Man Utd sign Yoro from Lille in £52m dealpublished at 07:12 British Summer Time 19 July

Let's start with Manchester United's signing of French defender Leny Yoro, who joins from Lille until 2029 in a deal worth 62m euros (£52.18m), with 8m euros (£6.73m) in add-ons.

The 18-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option for an additional 12 months.

Yoro, who made his Lille debut at the age of 16, had been linked with Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain, while Liverpool were also interested in him.

He played 32 times in the league last season and scored two goals as he helped Lille finish fourth and was named in the Ligue 1 team of the season.
