  1. 'I'd be very tempted to start Shaw - if he's fit'published at 11:58 British Summer Time 8 July

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Andy in Reading: There was one example against Switzerland where Luke Shaw ran around Phil Foden on the overlap and took two defenders with him. For me, that's the perfect example of why Gareth Southgate took Shaw and why he has to start on Wednesday. What do you think?

Phil: I would be very tempted - if I was convinced in my own mind that Luke Shaw was fit - to start him against the Netherlands. We presume Gareth Southgate will know that. He looked very good when he came on and, as you say, gave England more of a balance and attacking threat on the left, where they have struggled at Euro 2024.

Southgate, however, is a huge admirer of Kieran Trippier, speaking in glowing terms about him pretty much every chance he gets. He not only sees him as a key player but often talks about Trippier’s outstanding communication and the way he talks colleagues through games. He thinks that is a bit of a dying art in the game and Trippier is one of the best.

  2. 'Kane looked very jaded against Switzerland'published at 11:49 British Summer Time 8 July

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Leo from London: Captain Kane has been looking über sluggish to me this tournament; he just sort of moseys about (often far from the number 9 position) and then isn’t in the box when the cross comes in. Sure he’s a talisman and can take a penalty (but didn’t need him against the Swiss for that) but he doesn’t seem to be galvanising his squad in the way he used to. What’s going on and what do we do?

Phil: Hi Leo. You make a very valid point. This was certainly the case against Switzerland, when I thought Harry Kane looked very jaded and off the pace. He seemed to be struggling physically and barely won an aerial duel all night. It was a worry but it would still be a very big call to leave a proven, world-class goalscorer out. I think he will play against the Netherlands because Gareth Southgate knows what he can give him – and he has scored two goals as well.

My first experience of tournament football was as an 18-year-old watching England's 1966 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina. I was standing close to the point where Argentina's Antonio Rattin was escorted off the pitch having contested being sent off. I just turned up at Wembley the day before and could buy a ticket on the terraces with pocket money. How things have changed!

  5. Southgate: ‘I told Trent he can still have big moments’published at 11:36 British Summer Time 8 July

    Alex Howell

Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the winning penalty for England in the penalty shootout with Switzerland in the quarter-final of Euro 2024.

It’s been a difficult campaign for Alexander-Arnold after he started the tournament as England’s midfield "experiment" and was then substituted early in the second game.

England manager Gareth Southgate has said he has kept talking to the Liverpool right-back and told him he can still have big moments in an England shirt.

“Trent has stuck with the task," said the Three Lions boss. "He could have thought his tournament was done, but I kept talking to him about how he can have moments and still have a big part to play.”

Now England have switched to a three at the back there is the possibility that Alexander-Arnold can come into the wing-back position.

If not from the start, he can be used from the bench if England need to chase games and look to use his passing ability.

It was interesting watching the England quarter-final back on iPlayer before the penalty shootout, where Southgate was with the players telling them what number they were for each penalty. Eze would’ve been number six. Another fantastic penalty taker there.

    Tom, Laugharne

Also interesting Tom that, of Gareth Southgate's first six designated penalty takers, only Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka started the game. Cole Palmer, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold came off the bench to convert their spot-kicks, while Eberechi Eze was waiting in the wings, should the Crystal Palace penalty taker have been needed.

  7. New Culture Secretary helped save Wiganpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 8 July

Lisa Nandy was confirmed as the new Culture Secretary over the weekend, which means she will have an involvement in any plans for a new football regulator.

Nandy is acutely aware of the difficulties English Football League (EFL) clubs can find themselves in because she was heavily involved in the battle to save Wigan when the club went into administration in 2020.

It is anticipated the EFL will meet Nandy at some point in the not-too-distant future to put their point across.

I am pretty sure the same is also true of the Premier League.

No matter what anyone's opinion of Southgate is, one huge change for the better is that before his tenure just the word "penalties" would send a shiver down the spine of any England fan having lost every single shoot-out we have had. Now we have multiple wins and whilst we have lost a couple under Southgate, the prospect of penalties no longer fill us with dread.

  9. England's best performances since 1996published at 11:07 British Summer Time 8 July

    England 6-1 Panama - 2018

The manner of this England victory made the group-stage game memorable.

It was their biggest at a World Cup tournament, with Kane netting a hat-trick and defender John Stones claiming two goals.

Gareth Southgate's side were ruthless in front of goal, exhibiting a clinical edge which proved crucial in the rest of their run to the semi-finals.

  10. The end for English refs at Euro 2024published at 11:01 British Summer Time 8 July

Spain v France (Tues, 20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić will take charge of tomorrow's Euro 2024 semi-final between Spain and France.

That signals the end of the tournament for Premier League pair Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver as clearly, they cannot referee England.

It is understood they have now returned home.

Uefa underlined how highly they are regarded by giving them key quarter-final matches. The same could also be said of France's Clement Turpin, who took charge of Netherlands' win against Turkey.

  11. England's best performances since 1996published at 10:54 British Summer Time 8 July

    Germany 1-5 England - 2001

As perfect England performances go, it's hard to get much better than this.

Behind after six minutes at Munich's Olympiastadion, what followed was one of the Three Lions' greatest displays.

Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard scored to give them a half-time lead.

Then, Owen scored two more to complete his treble, while Emile Heskey also netted as they humiliated their rivals on their own ground.

  12. England's best performances since 1996published at 10:47 British Summer Time 8 July

    England 1-0 Argentina - 2002

Memories of World Cup defeats against Argentina at Mexico ‘86 and France ‘98 were painful for England.

But this group-stage win in Japan went some way to avenging those heart-breaking results.

David Beckham stroked home a penalty to seal the victory, while Michael Owen hit the post and Paul Scholes also came close.

They went on to progress from their group, but were knocked out by eventual winners Brazil in the quarter-finals.

  13. England's best performances since 1996published at 10:42 British Summer Time 8 July

    England 2-0 Germany - 2021

If one game set England’s Euro 2020 alight, this was arguably it. The Three Lions earned their first knockout win against Germany in 55 years to book a quarter-final spot.

They left it late at Wembley as Raheem Sterling and Kane struck to round off a commanding performance.

Yet there were other memorable moments. Thomas Muller missed a glorious chance to equalise for Germany, while Timo Werner and Kai Havertz had shots saved in each half.

In the end, England ground out a win and instilled a sense of hope that Euro 2020 could finally be the chance to end their trophy drought.

The last three tournaments under Southgate have been unbelievable scoring more goals in each than any of the previous tournaments - yet each tournament he's been branded as negative and defensive. It hasn't been pretty this time around but he's built an environment and a group of players with belief that they can overcome anything. He's changed English football for the better yet I don't think he'll ever truly get that credit.

  15. England's best performances since 1996published at 10:29 British Summer Time 8 July

    England 4-1 Netherlands - 1996

The last major tournament game against the Netherlands provided one of the best performances in England's footballing history.

Both teams only needed a point to get out of their group, but Terry Venables's side triumphed in style, scoring four goals in just over an hour.

Alan Shearer scored a 23rd-minute penalty and netted again in the 57th minute, while Teddy Sheringham scored in the 51st and 62nd minutes.

Such an impressive victory boosted the feel-good fever around England's home tournament.

They didn't manage to go the distance in the end - losing to Germany in the semis on a penalty shootout - but this impressive group-stage win will always hold a special place in English hearts.

    BBC Radio 5 Live

A final word from Conor Coady on the courage shown by Bukayo Saka to step up and take a penalty for England in Saturday's shootout win over Switzerland, three years after missing one in the last Euros final:

"It's all about what happens in that moment," Coady told Football Daily. "Saka knew he had players around him who supported him no matter what because at the end of the day it’s a penalty and he got the abuse that he got for that penalty.

"But to see him now, three years later, doing what he’s doing is remarkable. He's a special player without a doubt."

I think you’ve got to give a lot of credit to the manager [Gareth Southgate].

If you look back to 2020 and the penalty takers that we had compared to the penalty takers on Saturday and the age of them; [Cole] Palmer 22, [Jude] Bellingham, 21, [Bukayo] Saka, 22. These are kids, these are young lads, but they all take penalties for their team.
