I remember a lot of us ran straight up to him on the pitch at the time [when Bukayo Saka missed the decisive spot-kick in the Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley].

It was a horrible moment for everybody, more so for Saka.

That’s the worst dressing room I’ve ever been involved in after a game.

Prince William actually came in and spoke to us all and he was amazing with every single player.

He went round the boys who had missed a penalty on the night, gave them all a hug and consoled them.

Back to England's penalty shootout win over Switzerland.

Former Three Lions defender Conor Coady speaks at length in the latest episode of Football Daily about the journey Bukayo Saka has been on with the current team - from suffering abuse after missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy at Wembley to scoring from the spot and in open play during Saturday's quarter-final victory at Euro 2024...

  3. Parker to face media for first timepublished at 09:41 British Summer Time 8 July

Burnley's hot seat was vacant for over a month after Vincent Kompany's shock departure to join German giants Bayern Munich at the end of May.

But the void has been filled with the appointment of Scott Parker as head coach on a three-year deal and he will face the media for the first time this morning.

The former England midfielder's previously managerial appointment was at Belgian side Club Bruges, where he was sacked in March 2023 after lasting just 12 games.

The 43-year-old returns to English football and will now be aiming to achieve promotion with the Clarets at the first attempt after relegation last season, having achieved the same with Fulham and Bournemouth.

  4. Greenwood, Sancho uncertainty as Man Utd return to trainingpublished at 09:39 British Summer Time 8 July

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The Euros may be grabbing plenty of attention but the Premier League is starting to ramp up, with teams returning for pre-season training.

Manchester United are back today which raises inevitable question marks over the presence of Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho in particular.

Greenwood has been the subject of bids from Marseille and Lazio. He has not trained at United since those serious criminal allegations were made against him in January 2022.

Sancho has not trained with the first-team at United since September 2023, when he refused to apologise for the inflammatory social media post criticising manager Erik ten Hag.

In addition, it was not totally clear whether Casemiro refused to go on the bench after being dropped for the FA Cup final in May. He certainly made a swift exit from the post-match celebrations.

The Brazilian was left out of his country's Copa America squad.

And there may also be a return to the club for Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was just awaiting a work permit to join Ten Hag's coaching team.

For Phil and the BBC Sport team - this is what Saturday’s penalty shootout win meant to the Davis family in Cricklade, Wiltshire. The boys wanted to copy Jude Bellingham’s celebration pose. It would be so magical to be able to celebrate again on Wednesday, against the Netherlands! Come on, England!

    England 1-1 Switzerland (5-3 pens)

    Conor Coady
Former England defender on the Football Daily podcast

We all know Bukayo Saka is a real special player, he’s a special talent and to have him playing for our country is fantastic.

But you have to be a special human being, you have to be a person who is strong mentally, you have be a strong character to get through what he got through after the final at Wembley in 2020.

What he received [abuse on social media] was embarrassing, it was horrendous. He's a special, special person and it was magical for everyone.

Sadly, I am of the generation that only associate penalties with pain, unimaginable pain...

But back to the present day, and a moment of real joy for Bukayo Saka after the sadness of the last Euros...

Some pretty dark memories there Dave, indeed.

Jude Bellingham said after Saturday's win that his first memory of tournament football was England losing to Italy in a penalty shootout at the 2012 Euros.

Well there is a chance the Real Madrid midfielder will have given some young England supporters a fonder first memory with his acrobatic equaliser against Slovakia or, of course, the part he played in Saturday's penalty shootout win over Switzerland.

We will be taking a lighter trip back down memory lane at some point today, when we will ask you to pick out your favourite moments from this list of England's finest in tournament football.

With that in mind, and to include everyone from the UK, feel free to get in touch with your own first memory of tournament football or a favourite moment from tournaments past. Just send a message via text, WhatsApp or X using the contact details above.

In the 20 years after Euro 96 we didn't qualify for some tournaments, didn't win a game at others and never made it past a quarter-final. We had a faith healer, the 'Wally with the Brolly' and a manager who barely made it past two months in charge. People criticising Gareth Southgate should look back at the embarrassment of those two decades and see how far we've come since.

    Conor Coady
Former England defender on the Football Daily podcast

I loved it...the way the lads went about it, the way they prepared, the way they stepped up.

I'll be honest, I was sat at home and I was thinking that I wasn’t nervous in any way.

Obviously, I was nervous because it’s penalties and because of the past and the history and all that sort of stuff, but I looked at the lads walking up and I thought, they’re going to score.

I think it's full credit to the preparation of the players, the manager and the staff with how confident the penalty takers were...because they were fantastic, I loved every minute of it.

Jeremy, Somerset: That Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan can say all he likes about England, it took us a while but we are all now understanding Gareth Southgate's clever tactics. Switzerland were an outstanding attacking side yet against England they were unable to play as free as they wanted. England may not play pretty but they cut the opposition down and starve them of possession. 80,000 Dutch supporters coming over are going to have a long journey back home.

    England 1-1 Switzerland (5-3 pens)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Back to Michael Caulfield, speaking on 5 Live Breakfast, on England's not-so-secret weapon - their penalty takers.

The sports psychologist, who works with Ivan Toney at Brentford, says he was impressed with the collective skill all five England penalty takers showed in dispatching their spot-kicks against Switzerland.

“Penalties look easy but they’re actually really difficult because of the amount of scrutiny and pressure on them," he said.

“They are not a lottery [as some people suggest].

“Trent Alexander-Arnold's [decisive final] penalty was literally unsaveable. That’s the perfect penalty."

On Toney's no-look penalty technique: “It’s a remarkable skill he’s refined over the years. He’s got an extraordinary mind for a young man. This is a tough young man. A very smart young man.

“We are all very proud of him."

  17. Southgate has created a 'solid environment'published at 08:10 British Summer Time 8 July

Netherlands v England (Wed, 20:00 BST)

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand spoke about the "solid environment" Gareth Southgate has created for the players at Euro 2024, after he led them to a third semi-final in four tournaments.

"These guys look at each other and they find strength, and he has created that with his backroom staff," Ferdinand said on Southgate, after watching England set up a last-four encounter with the Netherlands with victory over Switzerland via a penalty shootout in Saturday's quarter-final.

"He has to take big credit for that. Now this team are used to going deep into tournament football."

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Brentford's sport psychologist Michael Caulfield, who worked with Gareth Southgate during his time as Middlesbrough manager, has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast about how the England boss is dealing with the criticism he has received.

“I’m like the rest of the country, just still enjoying what was a fantastic weekend of sport," said Caulfield, on his happiness at seeing his friend mastermind England's penalty shootout success against Switzerland.

"The whole point of sport is the joy of it. For him to carry on leading with real dignity, with some pretty personal criticism, it speaks a lot about the man.

“I think everyone’s with him for this week."
