Dungannon Swifts manager Rodney McAree has signed a three-year extension to his deal at Stangmore Park.

McAree is in his second stint as Dungannon manager and he helped the Swifts to the League Cup in 2018 - the club's first senior trophy.

The 50-year-old left for Coleraine later that year and had a stint at Glentoran before returning to Dungannon in June 2023.

The Swifts have made a superb start to the Irish Premiership season and sit in third place in the table, just three points behind pace setters Linfield.

Former Bristol City and Fulham midfielder McAree also spent seven years at Stangmore Park as a player.

McAree's side take on Portstewart this evening.

  10. Is home now where the heart is for NI's best managerial talent?published at 19:36 British Summer Time 1 October

Tiernan Lynch and David HealyImage source, BBC Sport

In the years before Larne boasted Northern Ireland's most successful football team, the harbour town was perhaps best known for the ferry to Cairnryan.

But in the week when the Inver Park club will make history by taking part in the league phase of the Conference League, it is a crossing to Scotland that will not be made which has become the story.

In turning down the opportunity to take over the vacant post at St Johnstone, manager Tiernan Lynch became the second Irish Premiership boss, after Linfield's David Healy, to reject overtures from the SPFL in as many months.

BBC Sport looks at how the decisions have challenged assumptions in the domestic game and what it means for the seasons ahead.

  11. Lynch stays for now but departure 'inevitable'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 1 October

Larne goalkeeper Rohan Ferguson is delighted at Tiernan Lynch's decision to reject the chance to become St Johnstone manager but believes his boss will seek a new challenge in the not too distant future.

Lynch's remaining at the Inver Park club means he will travel with the squad to Norway for their historic Uefa Conference League opening game against Molde on Thursday.

"It would probably have been hard to imagine Larne without Tiernan but I think it’s probably inevitable, with everything that he’s done with the club," said Ferguson, who like all the Larne squad, was signed by Lynch.

"He deserves to get a shot, whether that might be over the water [in Scotland], in England, you just never know."

    Dundela v Linfield (19:45 BST)

David Healy names a strong side as the holders visit Wilgar Park to take on Dundela.

He makes just five changes from Saturday's 3-0 win at the Coleraine Showgrounds with Kyle McClean getting the night off while Chris Johns, Euan East, Jamie Mulgrew and Matt Fitzpatrick are among the subs.

There are starts for Chris Shields, Kirk Millar, Joel Cooper and Ethan McGee as the Blues face the first of two sides in green from East Belfast this week.
