Arsenal striker Alessia Russo speaking to BBC Sport about the emotions from winning: "It was amazing. I think when we went out to Madrid, obviously we were disappointed, lots of factors played into it and as a team we reflected on it.

"But we knew we had the belief and we knew what we needed to do coming back to the Emirates. There was disappointment but it turned into more fire quite quickly. You could see that in our performance tonight."

It showed that Real were very used to playing on a boggy pitch, maybe not with that kind of torrential rain before kick-off. We just couldn't get our game going last time and they obviously were used to it. Coming to the Emirates was a big ask for them. I was just really impressed with how Arsenal controlled the game and didn't let up.

It was a big ask but she [Renee Slegers] firmly believed from a manager's point of view. It shows that she is capable of inspiring the team to deliver a performance like that. On their day, they can beat anyone but with Lyon in the semis, it's going to be a big ask. It will be two great games and a big challenge for the team.

Fantastic performances across the team last night, especially Russo and Kelly, but shoutout to Daphne van Domselaar who made a crucial stop just before the break to keep us in the game and again in second half stoppage time!

Big shout to Daphne Van Domselaar as well. Just before half-time, she made quite a big save with what was Real Madrid's only big attack. That helped them go in at 0-0 even though they'd really dominated that first half.

They just found the finishing touch on Chloe Kelly's crosses. That was more like the Chloe Kelly we're used to seeing with England.

It was one of those great European nights you dream of when you have to overturn a 2-0 deficit. They would have felt confident at the Emirates on a pitch they are used to with the crowd behind them.

From the first moment, they showed how determined they were and controlled the first half. They turned it around with a great performance.

  13. Have Arsenal ever won the Women's Champions League?published at 09:51 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

Yes, but not for nearly two decades.

Arsenal did so in 2006-07, becoming the only English side to win the European title on their way to a historic quadruple.

Vic Akers' side beat Swedish club Umea 1-0 on aggregate to lift the trophy - future BBC Sport presenter Alex Scott scored the only goal in the first leg in Scandanavia, before the Gunners held out at Meadow Park to triumph.

Still buzzing from last night at Emirates! Russo, Kelly and Caldentey rightly grab the headlines, but shoutout to Kim Little who rolled back the years to knit the midfield together, and Emily Fox who just refused to let the fearsome Linda Caicedo bully her and was super smart in anticipating her movements. 17. Arsenal's biggest Euro comeback in 14 yearspublished at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

FT: Arsenal 3-0 Real Madrid (agg 3-2)

According to Opta, Arsenal are the first English side to overturn a two-goal first leg deficit in a Women's Champions League knockout tie since the Gunners themselves did so in the 2010-11 last 16 against Rayo Vallecano.

After losing 2-0 in the first leg, Arsenal beat Vallecano 4-1 in the return to progress.

Arsenal are the comeback queens of Europe, with this the second successive time they have progressed through a knockout tie after losing the first leg following their turnaround against Bayern Munich in the 2022-23 quarter-finals - where they lost 1-0 in the first game, but triumphed 2-0 in the second.

  18. 'It's important for us'published at 09:25 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

    Emma Sanders
BBC Sport women’s football news reporter at Emirates Stadium

Six months ago when Renee Slegers replaced Jonas Eidevall, then as interim boss, Arsenal's season looked set to be one of huge disappointment.

Now they find themselves among the elite, preparing to face record eight-time European champions Lyon - coached by former Arsenal boss Joe Montemurro - for a place in the final.

"It's important for the club and the players," said Slegers. "They are part of Arsenal because they want to go far in tournaments, win things and be on the biggest stage.

"So it's important for us. I'm very happy with the result and we're going into the semi-finals."

It was only the second time a club has overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit in the quarter-finals of the competition, with Arsenal having done so against Torres in 2004, losing 2-0 away before a 4-1 home success.

  19. Are Arsenal underdogs against Lyon?published at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 March

Based on their history in the Champions League, definitely.

Lyon are far and away the most successful side in Women's Champions League history, winning the competition eight times - more than double the number of any ofther club.

The Ligue 1 Feminin team have also been runners-up a further three times, including last season when Barcelona beat them 2-0 in the final in Bilbao.

Arsenal do have reason to be cheerful however - they last met Lyon in the 2022-23 group stages and finished above the French side in the pool, thanks to a stunning 5-1 away win.

A similar result would surely set the Gunners on course for the final in Lisbon.

Really good win for Arsenal last night, can't help feeling Barca and Lyon are still favourites though. The French just decided to win in the second half v Bayern last night, and the Germans could do nothing.
