  1. Goodbye!published at 19:32 5 July

Thank you for joining Gareth, Jordan and us for this evening media conference.

We'll be back tomorrow for the game itself - England v Switzerland, in Dusseldorf, 17.00 BST kick-off.

    See you then.

  2. Pickford on penaltiespublished at 19:30 5 July

    England

Jordan Pickford on possibility of playing a back three: “There isn’t much difference to be honest. It is about being balanced whatever formation you play. As a goalkeeper you don’t have to worry as much. If it is a back three or back four the shape won’t change as much.”

On the prospect of penalties: “We will do whatever it takes to win a game. If it is in 90 minutes it is ideal but we will do anything to get the result.”

  3. Shaw available to startpublished at 19:25 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on who will play left-back: “Luke [Shaw] is available to start. But Kieran Trippier has done a brilliant job for the team. He doesn’t give that balance a natural left footer would but his leadership, communication and his talking is phenomenal and it helps the wingers in front of them play their game.

"It is a much undervalued quality and a dying art. You can’t have enough of them. He has exceptional qualities in that areas as well as quality on the ball. He has adapted and done a brilliant job for us."

  4. 'Job speculation is a fact of life'published at 19:22 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on speculation about his future: “It is a fact of life. If you are in one of the most high profile jobs in world football then there will always be speculation, assessment of what’s going on, so I am not worried.

"When I was a younger manager trying to forge a career you are worried about if the first job doesn’t go well there won’t be another job. So you are worrying about failing and getting the sack.

Now I am older, I’m 53, I’m not worried about losing or what will go wrong. We have the chance to get into a semi-final. It is a positive thing to focus on. It has been my mindset for quite a while now."

  5. 'We are playing a really strong football nation'published at 19:20 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on whether England need to take the opportunity of being in the perceived easier side of the draw: "I would say that is a classic example of the entitlement we have as a nation that creates drama and annoys our opponents. We are playing a really strong football nation who have played well, are prepared and have pride. Our focus is on how to we win this game and play to the best of our ability.

"We have never been to a final outside England, only had two in our history. So lots of nations who we might perceive to be smaller have had far better records than us in terms of winning things of getting to latter stages, it is half of the problem we have. But we are ready for tomorrow and have huge respect for our opponents and have to be at our very best to win the game."

  6. Postpublished at 19:17 5 July

    England

Just been informed of a stonking stat.

Gareth Southgate has used 99 different players in his 99 games in charge, not including players called up but who never played for the England senior team.

Every player in the current squad has made at least one appearance under Southgate, so sadly he won't reach 100 players used in his 100th match.

  7. 'In training the team looks in a different place'published at 19:15 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on England's style of play: "Every team wants to excite and score goals. We have played opponents who have made it very difficult for us. And we have seen in subsequent results they have given other teams problems as well. There has been a lot of expectation on the team in the early part of the tournament. In training the team looks in a different place."

  8. Postpublished at 19:12 5 July

    England

Jordan Pickford is asked about having the fourth-most Euros clean sheets of any player, with only goalkeeping icons Iker Casillas, Edwin van der Sar and Gigi Buffon ahead of him.

"I like the pressure, the big game moments," Pickford says of raising his game in major tournaments. "But it's not just me, it's the full 11."

  9. Postpublished at 19:10 5 July

    England

BBC's Dan Roan asks Southgate whether he has spoken to the team about taking their opportunity on the seemingly easier half of the draw - but the England manager is having none of it.

"That's a classic example of the entitlement we have as a nation, which creates drama and infuriates our opponents," he says.

  10. 'Foden has done a fantastic job'published at 19:08 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on Phil Foden's performances: "Phil has done a fantastic job for the team. He has had to adapt his game a little bit. Playing a club level every week you know the movements of every player and there’s a clear way of playing, so you are doing things without thinking so often. With the national team that is not possible, you don’t have the same cohesion and there isn’t the same dynamic.

“We are delighted with what he has done. He was unfortunate with the disallowed goal in the last game. I know he would like a goal. We aren’t concerned about his performance.”

  11. 100th game 'last thing on my mind'published at 19:04 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on his 100th game in charge: “I’m very proud but it is the least important stat of the week. The only thing that matters is it is a quarter-final and my complete focus is to get my country into another semi-final.

"I’m sure in years to come I will look back and reflect with great pride. But at the moment it is the last thing on my mind."

  12. Bellingham decision 'common sense'published at 19:02 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate on Jude Bellingham's suspended ban: “I thought it was a common sense decision. When you score a goal of the quality that he did, at the age that he is, you are going to get a rush of adrenalin. There was no intent in the gesture towards anybody but communication with his family. From our perspective we felt it was a sensible outcome.

"I speak to our players all the time so don’t feel the need to spend extra time with Jude. He is aware of the investigation and he is an intelligent guy."

  13. Postpublished at 19:00 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate is asked whether he will change formation tomorrow - and dodges the question.

"We're always considering the best way to approach a game," he says. "We are always trying to prepare to give our opponents the best possible game."

  14. Postpublished at 18:57 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate is asked a rather obtuse question involving metaphors about England being a slow Rolls Royce and Switzerland being a Mini Cooper.

"Switzerland have been very good," is his diplomatic answer.

  15. Postpublished at 18:55 5 July

    England

Gareth Southgate says Phil Foden has had to "adapt" at these Euros, when asked if he will be deploying the Manchester City forward in a new role following a lukewarm competition so far.

"We are very happy with what he has done," he adds.

  17. Postpublished at 18:51 5 July

    England

Both Gareth Southgate and Jordan Pickford are asked about Jude Bellingham's suspended ban for an offensive gesture.

"A common sense decision," says Southgate. "There was no intent in the gesture towards anyone."

    Here's Gareth and Jordan...

  19. Best of the statspublished at 18:49 5 July

    • This will be the fourth meeting between England and Switzerland at a major tournament, and third at the European Championships. England won 2-0 in the 1954 World Cup, 3-0 at Euro 2004, and had a 1-1 draw at Euro 1996.
    • England have now reached the quarter-final in all four of their major tournaments under Gareth Southgate, the first time they’ve ever reached the last eight at four consecutive Euros and World Cups.
    • Switzerland have reached only their fifth ever major tournament quarter-final, and second at the European Championships, after Euro 2020. They have been eliminated at this stage in all four of their previous attempts; this is the most any European nation has featured in quarter-finals of major tournaments without ever participating in a semi-final.
    • England have won 49 of their 116 matches at major international tournaments, and would be the sixth European nation to reach 50 with a victory here after Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands.
    • Switzerland's seven goals at Euro 2024 have been scored by seven different players.
