Former Portugal and Manchester United winger Nani is in Berlin for Euro 2024 and has been giving his thoughts about the quarter-finals - he's not too confident about England's chances against Switzerland on Saturday - in fact, he has predicted Gareth Southgate's side to go out.

"I think England have a great squad, but the performance until today is not the performance to make us confident in them to go through all these matches," said the 37-year-old.

"If Switzerland can maintain the consistency of their game, if they continue to play in that way with the energy and the quality, it will be very hard for England, I believe.

"[However] every game is different, we don’t know if Switzerland can perform in that way against England, because England are a strong side."

Nani retired from internationl duty in 2017, but is yet to call time on his playing career after featuring 34 times in all competitions for Turkish side Adana Demirspor last season.

"I feel good, feel motivated more than ever and believe I can continue to play," he added. "I have got some things to analyse but I believe something will happen."

Just saying, England last won an international trophy under a Labour government following a landslide victory...

Harold Wilson did indeed lead Labour to a 96-seat majority in March 1966, just a few months before Bobby Moore lifted the World Cup at Wembley.

  3. If I play, I'll make sure I do a job - Konsapublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 5 July

Ezri Konsa is being widely tipped to replace the suspended Marc Guehi in the England starting XI for what would be his first start at a major tournament.

Here he talks about Switzerland, his England team mates - and Ed Sheeran.

  4. Bellingham free to play against Switzerlandpublished at 18:39 British Summer Time 5 July

Some very, very good news for Gareth Southgate this morning.

Jude Bellingham is free to play against Switzerland on Saturday after being given a one-match suspended ban and fine for a gesture he made in the last-16 win over Slovakia.

The midfielder's crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakian bench after scoring a late equaliser in the 2-1 victory was investigated by Uefa.

Bellingham, who has made the gesture while playing for his club side Real Madrid, denied that it was aimed at England's opponents.

  6. Stat attack: England's back threepublished at 18:35 British Summer Time 5 July

    • Of Southgate's 99 games in charge, he has used a back three or a back five in exactly a third of them - 33 games.
    • His win ratio is 48.5% with a back three or back five, compared to 60.6% win ratio overall.
    • When facing a back three or back five - as Switzerland use - Southgate's win ratio is 61% from 41 games.
    • Southgate used a back three or back five formation for a run of 16 straight games between October 2017 and ending in September 2018 with a 1-0 friendly win over Switzerland, which included every game at the 2018 World Cup. Southgate then flipped to a 4-3-3 formation for almost all of the following two years.
    • England used a back three in just two games at Euro 2020 - the last-16 victory over Germany and in the final against Italy.
    • Southgate has not started with a back three or back five formation in the last 23 games - since a 3-3 Nations League draw with Germany in September 2022 (pictured). They played four at the back throughout the Qatar World Cup.
    • There has been discussion about England 'matching up' Switzerland's formation, but the last time England 'matched' a top European side with three at the back was a 1-0 Nations League loss in Italy in September 2022.

  7. England to go toe to toe with Switzerland?published at 18:33 British Summer Time 5 July

The final reason we are likely to see England in a back three is to match up against a Swiss side who have been among the most impressive at Euro 2024.

Switzerland caught the eye when holding hosts Germany in their final group game – only denied a win and top spot in Group A by a late Niclas Fullkrug equaliser – and handily beat defending champions Italy 2-0 in the round of 16.

Hakan Yakin's side play a back three, so Southgate may aim to go toe to toe.

The last time England 'matched' a top European side's starting formation with three at the back was in a 1-0 Nations League loss in Italy in September 2022.

But having only survived at Euro 2024 by the skin of their teeth, England know they must try something new – or a new variation on an old favourite.

  9. Walker to CB? Saka to LWB?published at 18:29 British Summer Time 5 July

Centre-back Marc Guehi (pictured), who had started every game to this point and impressed, is suspended having picked up two bookings.

The Crystal Palace player was rushed in as a defensive partner for John Stones after Harry Maguire was ruled out of the tournament by injury.

It is widely expected that Kyle Walker will slot in as a right-sided centre-back, a position he has regularly played for England when a back three has been used. Stones will take up the centre, while Southgate has three obvious options on the left side - Joe Gomez, Ezri Konsa or Lewis Dunk.

Another personnel issue is the ongoing left-back question.

Luke Shaw, England's only specialist in that position, is back in training after injury but has not yet played in Germany following Southgate's big gamble on his fitness.

Kieran Trippier started at left-back in England's opening four games but limped off in the second half against Slovakia.

Although he is expected to be available for the Switzerland game, Trippier is a natural right-footer and has delivered underwhelming performances at the Euros.

Southgate is looking to wing-back options, and among those is Bukayo Saka who stepped in as an emergency left-back against Slovakia due to Trippier's injury.

Saka has not regularly featured in a defensive role for club or country in several seasons, but he can play there and it may be a case of needs must.

  10. Back three to evoke happy memories?published at 18:27 British Summer Time 5 July

Although it has been rarely rolled out of late, the three-man backline is associated with some of England's best times under Gareth Southgate.

There was the heady run to the semi-finals in 2018, while a back three was also deployed twice at Euro 2020.

England used it for the 2-0 last-16 victory over Germany, and the final versus Italy where they took an early lead before eventually succumbing on penalties.

Using it against Switzerland would mean Southgate reverting to what has worked before, while also looking for it to spark an improvement in England's Euro 2024 performance.

They laboured against Slovakia, being open at the back while creating little in attack. Their first shot on target was Jude Bellingham's overhead bolt from the blue in the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Following dour draws with Denmark and Slovenia, the patience of Southgate - which ran longer than most pundits and supporters - has perhaps finally worn thin.

  11. A new formation for England?published at 18:25 British Summer Time 5 July

According to multiple reports, England could line up with a back three against Switzerland in their Euro 2024 quarter-final.

Gareth Southgate is likely to implement a change of system after setting up his England side with a four-man defence so far in Germany.

A variety of factors have led manager Southgate to explore this option: below-par performances, suspensions, and the desire to match the impressive Swiss man for man.

Although a mid-tournament change of formation is a radical move by Southgate, playing with a back three is hardly uncharted territory for this England manager...

  12. Southgate's most used England XIpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 5 July

These are the players who have made the most appearances in the 99 England games under Gareth Southgate - including five players in the current squad: Jordan Pickford, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Kieran Trippier and Harry Kane.

Kane has made the most appearances of anyone under Southgate with 78, followed by Walker's 67 and Stones and Pickford on 65.

If you think this XI looks familiar, it's because it started four of England's games at the 2018 World Cup (vs Tunisia, Colombia, Sweden and Croatia).

  14. Ton up for Southgatepublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 5 July

England v Switzerland will be Gareth Southgate's 100th match in charge of the national team.

He is just the third man to reach this milestone, following the first two England managers - Walter Winterbottom and Alf Ramsey - and the first since Ramsey reached his century against Wales in 1972.

Of his 99 games so far, Southgate has won 60, drawn 23 and lost 16. This puts him third in the number of all time wins (after Winterbottom and Ramsey), while he has the fourth best win percentage of any England men's manager after Fabio Capello, Ramsey and Glenn Hoddle.

  15. No new injury concerns for Englandpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 5 July

All 26 players in manager Gareth Southgate's squad trained on Friday morning.

This includes Luke Shaw, who is yet to play at this tournament, and Kieran Trippier who limped off against Slovakia.

Who is fit to play a major tournament quarter-final remains to be seen.
