Summary

  1. Are striker stories linked?published at 16:05 British Summer Time 6 June

    Craig Nelson
    BBC Sport reporter

Transfer deals are often linked - one can lead to another.

Jean-Philippe Mateta has been touted as a potential number nine for Manchester United.

If the Frenchman signs a contract extension at Crystal Palace, could that push United in another direction?

Not that there has been any firm reports to suggest Mateta has been courted by the deal makers at Old Trafford.

But today's talk has been centred on Victor Gyokeres' apparent interest in hooking back up with his former boss at Sporting, now United manager Ruben Amorim.

Rayan Cherki has been a guiding force for Lyon since 2019, when he made his first-team debut after coming through the French club's academy.

He has guided the club to runner-up finishes in both the French Cup and French League Cup, registering 29 goals and 45 assists across 185 appearances in all competitions.

During the 2024-25 campaign, Cherki, still only 21, bagged eight goals and 11 assists in Ligue 1 and a further four goals and eight assists in Lyon's run to the Europa League quarter-finals.

He made his France debut last night, scoring and assisting in a 5-4 defeat against Spain in the Nations League semi-finals.

Able to operate as a right winger and an attacking midfielder, the skilful Cherki is known for his ability to carry the ball over long distances, drawing comparisons to Lionel Messi for his dribbling abilities.

He is not only capable of picking out his team-mates but also has an eye for goal, making him dangerous to deal with in more ways than one.

While we are on the subject of Lyon, the Ligue 1 club could be at the centre of another one of the summer's key transfer sagas.

According to Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg, external, Lyon have rejected a first offer from Manchester City for France's attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki.

"The second offer is now being prepared. Negotiations are ongoing," Plettenberg wrote on X.

"Cherki is waiting for an agreement between the clubs. Totally relaxed and fully focused on his match against Germany on Sunday. He could possibly be in the starting XI after his excellent performance against Spain."

Cherki scored what was the pick of a nine-goal thriller on Thursday as France lost 5-4 to Spain in the Nations League semi-finals.

  5. Could Europa League decision affect Mateta's thinking?published at 15:43 British Summer Time 6 June

    Craig Nelson
    BBC Sport reporter

BBC Sport reported earlier that Crystal Palace could have to wait until the end of the month to find out if they are able to play in the 2025-26 Europa League, which may play a factor in Jean-Philippe Mateta's decision.

Uefa rules forbid individuals from having control of more than one club in the same competition to avoid conflicts of interest.

Eagle Football - the multi-club group owned by John Textor, which includes a minority shareholding in Palace - owns a majority stake in Ligue 1 side Lyon, who have also qualified for next season's competition.

Crystal Palace are in talks with striker Jean-Philippe Mateta over signing a new contract.

A full agreement is still to be reached but it is understood a deal is now close.

The 27-year-old was a standout performer in Oliver Glasner's side last season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions as Palace won the FA Cup - their first major trophy.

The Frenchman, who joined from Mainz initially on loan in 2021, has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, with Aston Villa, Manchester United and Marseille among the clubs credited with an interest.

His current deal runs out in 2027 after the Eagles triggered a 12-month extension on his contract.

However, Palace are reluctant to allow Mateta to enter the final year of his deal and want to secure his long-term future.

Tom, a Coventry fan: Re G at 14:28 - you wrote terrible but I think you misspelt INCREDIBLE. One of the best strikers in the championship during his time with the sky blues. Sporting signed him for their club record fee and he's scored more than a goal per game on average since. Man U fans should get real with where they are at as a club. They should be dreaming of signing a striker as good as Big Vic!

WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

It always gets me worried when I see Man Utd managers look to bring players from former clubs with them. It tends not to go well.

    Jason

As a United fan it's all good and well strengthening the attack which clearly failed this season, but surely they need a keeper, far too many mistakes in both Onana and Bayindir, never going to get anywhere with a rubbish keeper. Onana replaced De Gea primarily for his passing and distribution but half the time he kicks it out of play when he goes long so that's a load of rubbish, and he couldn't catch a cold!

    Steve

Gyokeres to United might not be a good idea. We saw how terrible he's done at Coventry. Now you might be saying "Oh he's improved and knows Amorim's style of play" etc. However, Ten Hag brought half of his champions from Ajax to Old Trafford and we saw how that worked out.
