Isak won't be sold this window, it's a Rooney situation all over again with his agent driving for a fee. Eddie was right to call it out and he will be sold in January if Sesko comes in and Isak's attitude doesn't improve.

  2. Can Isak be reintegrated at Newcastle?published at 08:40 British Summer Time

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

It depends how important [a player is] to the other payers in the dressing room and how popular they are and on that level, Isak scores highly. He’s a popular individual and an outstanding player for Newcastle United and they absolutely want to keep him.

Eddie Howe has handled it really well because he’s very much left the dressing room door open for Isak to come in. He’s got three years left in his contract, the Saudi owners of Newcastle can play hard ball and say listen ‘this is a World Cup year and we can make you sweat’.

Where Liverpool come in and you look at the players they’ve got, you look at the title they’ve just won, you look at their ambition and how well run they are as a cub and the possibility of playing at Anfield, even though St James’ Park is a special place, you can see why Isak would be tempted.

  3. Newcastle's Isak stance unchangedpublished at 08:35 British Summer Time

    David Ornstein
The Athletic's football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

Newcastle absolutely want to keep Alexander Isak. Their stance is that he’s not for sale. There are three years left on his contract. However, he does want to leave and Liverpool had a bid rejected around £110m.

Their interest remains but I don’t think they’re planning to go back in imminently because they’re assessing how the situation develops while Newcastle return to training in the UK today.

We’ll see if he is integrated back into team training.

I've been very impressed with how Eddie Howe has managed the Isak saga in the media. Protected his player all the way, but with the player due back in training this week he's laid down the expectations. Isak has behaved "poorly", as have Liverpool. It's clear Isak has been poorly advised by his agent and Liverpool, and now has a decision to make on his conduct. Read him the riot act, Eddie!

  6. Isak transfer situation 'far from ideal' - Howepublished at 08:15 British Summer Time

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe says the transfer situation surrounding striker Alexander Isak is "complex" and "far from ideal".

The 25-year-old was left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia with what the club described as a "minor" thigh issue.

The Sweden international subsequently trained alone at former club Real Sociedad - something Howe said he found out about through the media.

Howe said after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham that he didn't know if Isak would train this week, however, sources close to the situation have indicated Isak was due back in Newcastle this weekend.

"I think from my situation, I am very much removed from everything that is happening back home," Howe told a news conference on Saturday.

"I was made aware there was a bid yesterday. That bid was turned down before I heard about it. There are people back in England dealing with the situation.

"I really don't know what is going to happen next but, from our perspective, we still support Alex in every way and my wish is still that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again."

  7. Liverpool prepared not to pursue Isak deal furtherpublished at 08:10 British Summer Time

    Liverpool

This is where we left it on Friday...

Liverpool claim they are willing to walk away from a move for striker Alexander Isak after Newcastle United rejected their opening offer.

The Magpies, who value the Sweden international at about £150m, turned down a bid of £110m from the Premier League champions.

BBC Sport understands Liverpool do not think a deal for Isak is achievable this summer as it stands.

It is unclear whether this is a negotiating tactic and if Liverpool will maintain that stance.
