Tributes - including flowers and George Baldock's number two shirt - have been laid outside Bramall Lane this afternoon.

Lyndsey Allison, 42, a lifelong fan and season-ticket holder, told me: "I was absolutely devastated, shocked, gutted, absolutely can't believe it. he was such a decent person, he gave everything. He gave his all on the pitch, but was equally good off the pitch [with the fans].

"He was just brilliant, Mr Sheffield United. For a lad who wasn't born in Sheffield, he was Mr Sheffield United and is going to be missed by so many, it feels like I've lost a friend. I know he was a footballer doing a job, but you could see it was more than a job to him. He'll be forever missed.

"I've laid some flowers. It's not something I normally do, but I couldn't sit at home. I said to my husband, 'I can't sit here, I need to go down to the Lane'."

Derby County's Ben Osborn, who played for Sheffield United from 2019-2024, said: "In absolute shock about hearing the tragic news about George last night. One of the best. A true one of a kind, the most entertaining person I've ever met, with so much life ahead of him.

"Thoughts go out to his young family and also his parents and brothers, I can't imagine what they'll be going through right now. Such a sad day. Life's short. RIP Baldock, love you mate."

Max Lowe, who played for Sheffield United from 2020-2024: "GB, I am devastated. A special teammate, true friend and infectious personality loved by everyone which will never be forgotten.

"Thoughts go out to your beautiful family ❤️ You will be truly missed. Star man."

Sheffield United midfielder Anis Ben Slimane, who is currently on loan to Norwich City, added: "Can't believe it. What a fantastic person and character. From day one you gave me a warm welcome, thank you for all bro."

Chris Basham, who played for Sheffield United throughout George Baldock's time with the club, said: "Deeply saddened to hear the news about George, 7 years together and a true legend of the Lane and a good friend.

"Someone I knew who always had my back out there on the field, right side ❤️. My thoughts go out to his family during this difficult time."

I've been at Bramall Lane this afternoon, speaking to Sheffield United fans after the passing of their former player George Baldock.

Chris McTigue, 44, has been a Blades fan since he was a boy. He said: "George, he knew what it was like to be a Sheffield United player. He knew what it was to be a Blade. When he wasn't in the team, when he was injured, at away games he'd be sat with the fans. He were a proper Sheffield United fan, player and he was adored by the staff of this club and the fans".

Cardiff City forward Callum Robinson, who played for Sheffield United during the 2019/20 season: "Can't actually believe this news. I will always love you Georgeyyyy boy. You'll forever be in my heart, brother. I don't know what more to say. Rest easy GB."

Stockport County midfielder Ollie Norwood, who played with George Baldock at Sheffield United for six years: "I can’t believe I’m writing this… R.I.P to one of the best! You were such an infectious person, loved by everyone - Always brightened up the dressing room! I’m heartbroken you’re leaving a young family behind - your Blades family will do everything to look out for them. You’ll be missed Georgie! Love you brother, forever."

Sources inside the Greece camp have told BBC Sport that the players are "devastated" by George Baldock's sudden death.

Greece sources told the BBC that the Greek Football Federation asked about a possible postponement of Thursday’s game, but were told by Uefa that there was no room in the busy calendar.

BBC Sport has approached Uefa for comment.

From the first moment we met you took care of me like a big brother. I could always rely on you. In good or bad times you were always there for me. You and your family always made me feel home.

Former Sheffield United player Kean Bryan, who played for the club between 2019 and 2021, has said: "Georgy boy. Can’t believe I’m writing this. Always brightened up every room you walked in & was loved by everybody at the club. RIP mate. Love you."

Celtic defender Auston Trusty, who spent last season with Sheffield United: "Heartbreaking. Can't believe I'm writing this. You will be truly missed. Loved every second of getting to know you this past year. It was an honour to share the pitch with you. Praying for your family. Rest in peace brother."

BBC Sport senior football reporter Ian Dennis on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It will be extremely difficult for the Greece players. There will be a period of silence and also both teams will wear black armbands as a mark of respect at Wembley tonight.

"It will be very difficult for the Greece players to focus on the game because as I say, until recently, he was a team-mate of many of them, who played in that game in March against Georgia. I'm sure at the forefront of their minds will be George Baldock."

Former England manager Gareth Southgate says he will not return to a coaching role for at least a year.

The 54-year-old resigned from the England job after the defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final in July.

Southgate was appointed as Three Lions boss in 2016 and guided England to back-to-back Euro finals, as well as a fourth-place finish at the 2018 World Cup.

He has been linked with Manchester United amid the uncertainty over the future of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

However, speaking at the European Club Association general assembly in Athens on Thursday, Southgate ruled out an immediate return to management.

"I won't coach in the next year for sure, I'm certain of that," he said. "I need to give myself time to make good decisions.

"When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time. I'm enjoying my life, so there's no rush."
