    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

A quick bit of transfer new before we close today's page.

Wolves are keen on Genk striker Tolu Arokodare as they look to add to their strikeforce.

The Nigeria international has other interest, but Wolves have held tentative talks with Genk over the 24-year-old.

Arokodare scored 21 times for Genk last season, the joint-top scorer, as they finished third in the Jupiler League.

Wolves have moved on from their pursuit of Getafe's Christantus Uche after failing to complete a deal while are still determined to keep Norway striker Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Newcastle have had two bids of £50m and £55m rejected by Wolves this week.

@win_n10 on “X”: What do you make of the situation at Everton with a new stadium and major squad overhaul going on?

I was at the first Premier League game at Everton’s new stadium, and it was totally breathtaking. A magnificent amphitheatre which is not just state-of-the-art but a purpose-built football stadium rich in atmosphere.

It already has the feel of the very best stadia that you attend at major tournaments – you can certainly see why it will be the envy of so many and exactly why it has been chosen to stage matches at Euro 2028.

I have criticised Everton for getting things wrong in the past, but what they have pulled off with Hill Dickinson Stadium is very special.

As for transfers, still a lot of work to do despite those players already brought in. Right-back, defensive central midfield and a striker would be right at the top of my list of priorities.

  5. Phil McNulty Q&A - 'Man Utd should not be considering any deal for Mainoo'published at 15:12 BST 28 August

Mike: Hi Phil. What do you think the chances are of a team like Spurs coming in last minute for Mainoo, considering Madders and Kulusevski are out for some time? I think it would work wonders on this young lad.

Hello, Mike. I am mystified at how this is being allowed to happen at Manchester United. Mainoo has proved he has huge potential, playing for England in the Euro 2024 final, and sometimes young players do go through troughs in form without being marginalised as he has been by Ruben Amorim.

Not sure he is like-for-like for the two players you mention, but he would be a good signing for plenty of Premier League clubs, not just Spurs. Manchester United should not be considering any deal for Mainoo.

Sunderland v Brentford (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

A final bit of team news from Brentford, who provided an update earlier today.

England midfielder Jordan Henderson has trained fully this week after missing Tuesday's EFL Cup win at Bournemouth.

Meanwhile, Vitaly Janelt has re-joined team training, forward Gustavo Nunes is "progressing well" and is back training on the grass, while Paris Maghoma is "building his fitness" after missing the pre-season.

  8. Wolfsburg target Ajer 'will be in the squad on Saturday'published at 15:08 BST 28 August

Sunderland v Brentford (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Keith Andrews on reports the club has rejected a bid from German side Wolfsburg for Norway defender Kristoffer Ajer:

"For me, Kristoffer is someone I definitely don't want to lose. Whether something has happened during my time on the grass and what I have been doing today, I am a little bit unsure, but it is one for Phil [Giles, director of football] to deal with in terms of ins and outs, obviously.

"But for me Kristoffer is a big part of the group.

"He played the game the other night, obviously. He played very well and he will be in the squad on Saturday."

  9. Wissa will play no part against Sunderland - Andrewspublished at 15:05 BST 28 August

Sunderland v Brentford (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Keith Andrews said there was no update on want-away forward Yoane Wissa's transfer situation:

"Copy and paste from the other day - the exact same answer. Nothing has changed in my stance, in terms of movement behind the scenes, I can't see any movement on that so it is very much the same as it was, really."

On whether Wissa will be involved against Sunderland: "No, again similar to the other day, really. Focus on the group that is settled, I suppose, and not got issues ongoing, which clearly Yoane has. So the squad will be pretty much the same as it was the other night."

On his communication with Wissa: "It's constant, it's pretty much daily. I keep saying about the level of respect I have for Yoane and the relationship I have had with him. That has been difficult, for obvious reasons, I don't think it is revolutionary for me to say that, but what we say will remain between us."

On whether Wissa is training with the squad: "Same as the other day - he's training."

Still confident he will be a Brentford player after the window closes?: "Yes, I still feel that. The football club in general want to hold on to Yoane and going back to the type of player he is and the person he is, I certainly don't want to lose Yoane."

Leeds United v Newcastle United (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Leeds United

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke on team news: "Ethan Ampadu is not available for this game and Ao Tanaka is not available for this game. It is difficult for us to replace players of this calibre compared to a squad that is equipped to play in the Champions League.

"It's a bit tricky because we have spoken about the value of Ethan and Ao for us. We are a bit thin but we will find some solution."

    Leeds United

More from Leeds boss Daniel Farke on whether the club is looking to bring in more players: "We were always open and transparent to what we are doing. We wanted to strengthen in all positions.

"I think we more or less have all the defensive and midfield additions that we wanted and we make no secret out of this that to the last day of the window, we will look to strengthen our offence a bit more.

"We have done this in the past days with Dominic [Calvert-Lewin] and Noah [Okafor] but we are trying in this area to strengthen our squad a bit more."

"For us, our main focus is to strengthen our offence. How realistic it is? I don't think it makes any sense that I give you a percentage but we are looking to strengthen our offence a bit more. If there are one or two more signings we will see. We have spoken about what we want and I think everybody at the club is working really hard to ensure we can provide this in the coming days."

  17. Recap: Thursday's headlinespublished at 14:32 BST 28 August

From Manchester United analysis to news conference updates, here's a round-up of some of today's top lines:

  18. How Pym's penalty prep came good when it mattered mostpublished at 14:26 BST 28 August

Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Christy Pym has also told BBC Newsbeat how his preparations for a potential penalty shootout against Manchester United paid off...when it mattered most.

Pym played a key role in the penalty shootout, saving the all-important fifth spot kick from Matheus Cunha that would have sent United through.

Ruben Amorim's side eventually lost the shootout 12-11, with another new signing, Bryan Mbeumo, seeing the decisive spot kick crash back off the bar.

"The night before I was looking at all the pens with my goalkeeping coach for about an hour, but they kept on going the opposite way to the way we thought they would," said Pym, whose only save in the shootout came from Cunha.

"With Cunha, the process was that he would stop, hesitate and put it to the left, and that's what happened and for Grimsby Town it's massive."

  19. Amorim should stay in charge - Grimsby keeper Pympublished at 14:20 BST 28 August

Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Christy Pym did not lend his voice to clamour for Ruben Amorim to be sacked as Manchester United manager.

The 30-year-old stopper has been speaking with BBC Newsbeat's Abu Yasin about the part he played in helping the Mariners down Premier League United - the club he supports.

Pym followed his father in becoming a United fan and told Newsbeat that he goes to watch them at Old Trafford whenever he can.

"I think Amorim should stay in charge," said the Grimsby keeper. "It's been a rough time recently as a United fan, but I don't see the point in keeping on changing managers. It's not the manager, it's the club as a whole, and I think he's the right man."

  20. Phil McNulty Q&A - 'United are paying the price for years of bad decision-making'published at 14:11 BST 28 August

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to pose a question

Alan: Hi Phil, do you not think it's just swings and roundabouts when it comes to success? Chelsea and Man City both dominated for a while, as did Man United under Alex Ferguson, just a thought.

Hello, Alan. Football is certainly cyclical, as we have seen in recent years, but Manchester United are also paying the price for years of bad decision-making from the moment Sir Alex Ferguson left.
