Lloyd Griffith was also asked on 5 Live Breakfast about Ruben Amorim's decision not to watch the penalties.

The Manchester United manager remained in his dugout throughout the shootout and images of Amorim shifting magnets on his tactics board during the game have gone viral.

Griffith said: "I saw a number of memes last night, [showing Amorim] giving the kid crayons at the Harvester. That's what it looked like."

Comedian and Grimsby Town fan Lloyd Griffith cut short a holiday in Malta to watch the match at Blundell Park.

He convinced his girlfriend to fly home a day early and was glad he did.

"It was an unbelievable game," Griffith told 5 Live Breakfast.

"The worst thing would have been if I had come back and we had got thumped 7-0 by Manchester United, but that wasn't the case. We ran them off the park for the first half, it was ridiculous.

"When you are chanting 'can we play you every week' and it is Manchester United, it's a beautiful moment.

"In the second half there was some mad storm that happened. There was lightning. They made something like £95m worth of changes at half-time and got back into the game, but those penalties...I have never seen anything like it in real life."

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been criticised for his decision to sit in the dugout during the penalty shootout defeat at Grimsby, leaving his coaches to feed his directions to the players.

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter, Simon Stone, was asked about that during Nicky Campbell's phone-in on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"The result is one thing, but him sitting basically cowering in the dugout as the penalties are going in, it is difficult to imagine someone like Sir Alex Ferguson doing that in such a stressful situation."

Simon was asked if this was his "wally with a brolly" moment, referring to former England manager Steve McLaren's actions as he watched his side fail to qualify for the 2008 European Championships during a match against Croatia at Wembley.

"I think that is something that will be very difficult to shake away. Every team loses football matches, but it's how you lose and how you lead, isn't it?

"We are brought up to think that you lead from the front.

"You are the first one into battle. Well, Ruben Amorim did not give that impression.

"He might have a very valid reason why he wanted to do that. I am not sure what it is and he didn't articulate it last night, but it just doesn't look good."

Rob: In your opinion, after listening to Ruben Amorim's interview, do you think, like I do, that he wants to get sacked?

Morning, Rob. I’d never suggest with confidence that any manager wants to get the sack, but Amorim hinted last season that he would accept it if United did not think he was the right man and some of his quotes post-match last night were cryptic, such as: "The players spoke really loudly about what they want” and “when you don’t show up, something has to change and you are not going to change 22 players again."

Whatever way you dress it up, whether he wants to or not, nights like last night mean a Manchester United manager has a fight on his hands to survive.

Grimsby Town manager David Artell finished his interview on 5 Live Breakfast with an impassioned defence of Manchester United's Ruben Amorim.

A listener's tongue-in-cheek question was posed to him as to whether he would be interested in the United manager's job, when it inevitably comes around:

"I do not speculate about people in jobs. They have got a world-class manager and he just needs time.

"Yes, time is a precious commodity in football. I have said it throughout my career - if you want to give me either time or money, give me time.

"Ruben Amorim needs time. He's an excellent manager. You don't become Manchester United manager - having done what he has done in his career - if he's not good at his job.

"He has shown he can do it. Just give him time, he will get it right. He's a good guy. You can see he is a good guy and he will put that club [back] to the top table, if he does get that time."

  7. Wolves sign Krejci on loanpublished at 11:27 British Summer Time

Wolves have completed the signing of Girona defender Ladislav Krejci on an initial loan deal.

The 26-year-old centre-half, who can also play in midfield, will complete a £26m permanent move to Molineux until 2030 if certain clauses are met.

The Czech Republic international moved to Girona last summer and made 35 appearances in all competitions as they finished 16th in La Liga, surviving by a point.

He joined the Spanish club from Sparta Prague, where he spent five years and won two league titles.

Wolves, who have lost their opening two Premier League games, have already signed full-backs Jackson Tchatchoua and David Moller Wolfe and forwards Fer Lopez and Jhon Arias this summer.

They are also looking to bring it at least one striker before Monday's transfer deadline as they try to keep forward Jorgen Strand Larsen at the club,

Andy: Hi Phil, what did you make of Sesko being the 10th penalty taker in the shootout with three defenders going ahead of him? Was Amorim trying to protect him from potential scrutiny had he missed?

Morning, Andy. I was amazed. You’d think your new £74m striker would be right up the pecking order. He did score comfortably, but logic suggested he should have been higher up. Very puzzling.

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

More from Grimsby Town manager David Artell, speaking on 5 Live Breakfast, about his League Two side's performance in beating Manchester United:

"The players were magnificent. They deserve all the credit and all the plaudits that will come their way because ultimately they are the ones who have to go out there and perform.

"They played with freedom and the way we asked of them. We played our way, it wasn't [a case of] sitting in and trying to hit them on the break. We went toe to toe with a terrific team and for 60 or 70 minutes were probably the better team.

"We are all incredibly proud of what we have shown."

Adrian: Glasner is a better coach than Amorim. Same System, 13 games unbeaten, two trophies. The players run until they drop for him. Can one assume that if you know what you are doing, results will follow?

Hello, Adrian. It is no contest when it comes to who is doing a better job, with infinitely fewer resources as well. Everything you say about Glasner is true. Crystal Palace made a superb choice when they appointed him, and he brings success, such as the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and the FA Cup with The Eagles.

  12. Man Utd 'on the right track' under Amorim - Artellpublished at 10:53 British Summer Time

Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

    Grimsby Town

Grimsby Town manager David Artell broke off from reviewing last night's footage of their Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United to speak with BBC Radio 5 Live.

The League Two boss admitted to being frustrated as he watched it back.

"The disappointing thing is that we didn't manage to win it in 90 minutes," he said. "We absolutely fluffed a chance to make it 3-0. We've had two goals disallowed, one I think is a perfectly good one. But we gave them a chink of light... and this is Manchester United."

Artell also spared a thought for his opposite number, Ruben Amorim.

"They are not a poor team," he said. "They are certainly on the right track to getting back right to the top [of the] table.

"They have got an excellent manager and they don't need a second invite to put it on you and get back in the game."

Nicholas: Are we going to see Manchester United 'panic buy' a goalie and a midfielder before the transfer window closes?

I would not see Manchester United signing a keeper and a midfielder as a “panic buy”. They simply have to address these areas – although if they had one, then that is panic.

  14. Phil McNulty Q&A - 'It would be embarrassing and a horrendous look for Ineos'published at 10:34 British Summer Time

Click 'Get Involved' at the top of this page to pose a question

Simon: Phil, given that most agree that Manchester United can’t just keep sacking managers, what’s a realistic timescale to give Amorim to turn things around?

Hello, Simon. It would be embarrassing and a horrendous look for Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe if they sacked a manager they have invested so much in after two league games and an – albeit humiliating – Carabao Cup defeat. United have given Amorim £200m to spend on a new forward line, but they had to sack Erik ten Hag after giving him a similar amount last summer.

We know the rules, though. If Amorim does not show any signs of improvement in the short term, then he is in a whole world of trouble, as are Manchester United’s hierarchy.

  15. Who went ahead of United’s new number nine?published at 10:29 British Summer Time

Grimsby Town 2-2 Man Utd (Grimsby win 12-11 on pens)

For those wondering just how far down the pecking order Benjamin Sesko was in last night’s shootout, here’s the full list:

    • Bruno Fernandes
    • Bryan Mbeumo
    • Mason Mount
    • Diogo Dalot
    • Matheus Cunha (missed)
    • Joshua Zirkzee
    • Kobbie Mainoo
    • Harry Maguire
    • Matthijs de Ligt

They all stepped up before the Slovenian striker finally took his turn. Sesko did tuck his penalty away, but when your new £74m forward is the 10th man in the pecking order, fans are bound to ask questions.

Either way, the optics aren’t great, and supporters have already started debating whether this was sensible man-management or an early sign of hesitation over United’s new frontman.

Terrible that the two penalty misses come from the new forwards in Cunha and Mbeumo, but much worse than this is Sesko's unwillingness to step up until the 10th penalty. He turned down a move to Arsenal last summer for fear of competing with Havertz, which points to real mentality issues.

    Edmond

A nightmare start for Man United’s £200m attack. Cunha and Mbeumo fluff their lines in the shootout, while Sesko only stepped up for the 10th penalty. Hardly reassuring when your marquee striker shies away from the spot against League Two opposition.

    Lewis

Apart from the poor performance, it showed mentally that something was wrong. Two forwards who cost more than £60m have penalties saved, and the £75m striker takes the 10th penalty. Add in Amorim not even watching, and it is just bizarre.

Sesko in actionImage source, Getty Images

Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United’s brand new number nine, had to wait an eternity to take his penalty last night - stepping up 10th in the order, after several defenders had already gone.

According to Transfermarkt, Sesko has converted all 11 penalties he has taken in his senior career, and he appears to be reliable.

With that said, he did convert his spot-kick, but the optics aren’t great. Was it a sign of a lack of confidence from the new striker? Or was manager Ruben Amorim simply trying to protect him in case he missed? Either way, seeing your big summer signing placed behind three defenders in the queue will raise a few eyebrows among the fans.

Aston Villa midfielder Samuel Iling Jr is expected to leave on loan before Monday's transfer deadline.

The England Under-21 international, who won Euro 2025 with the Young Lions in the summer, has been given the green light for a temporary move.

Iling Jr is yet to make a senior appearance for Villa since joining from Juventus last summer and was an unused substitute in the opening day 0-0 draw with Newcastle.

He spent time at Bologna - playing against Villa in the Champions League - and Middlesbrough last season.

The 21-year-old started his career at Chelsea before moving to Juve in 2020, where he played 45 times, scoring twice, and won the Italian Cup in 2024.
