Missing iconic moments of football matches is a common tale - there are always some fans who walk out of the stadium early, or something equally inexcusable.

  2. Walking a tightropepublished at 10:45 1 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

We know that defender Marc Guehi will have to sit out England's quarter-final against Switzerland after totting up two yellow cards in the tournament.

Gareth Southgate has five other players who will be walking a tightrope against the Swiss in Dusseldorf on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo and injury doubt Kieran Trippier have all been booked and would miss the semi-final, should England make it through, if they pick up another yellow card.

England fan Mohammed from Birmingham, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am over the moon!

"My grandchildren loved the game and it was so wonderful, I cannot describe the feeling. They blew up - they jumped up in joy and happiness.

"It was a beautiful thing. My children are all British born and they were yelling for England, they played rubbish at the beginning but they knew they were going out and they put 110% effort in last night."

  4. Guehi missing, Trippier an injury doubtpublished at 10:34 1 July

England v Switzerland (Sat, 17:00 BST)

Another word of caution as focus now switches to the challenge ahead against Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

England full-back Kieran Trippier took a knock to his leg in a second-half challenge and had to be withdrawn, leaving Bukayo Saka to fill in at left-back as England searched for the equaliser.

We will have to wait and see if the Newcastle defender is fit to play in the last eight.

The Three Lions will definitely be without Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi, who will serve a one-match suspension after picking up a second yellow card of the tournament.

Guehi, 23, has been a revelation since being brought in to partner Manchester City's John Stones in the centre of defence.

With the pair together, England have conceded just two goals in four matches at Euro 2024.

    John Cross
Daily Mirror Chief Football Writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's all that matters in tournament football, it is all about the knockout stages. But, is it?

England were not particularly impressive in the group stage and that set us up for a negative attitude in the Slovakia game.

The players looked so nervous in the first 20 minutes, too much weight and expectation on their shoulders.

What impressed me about Slovakia even though they are 40-places behind England in the Fifa rankings -they were incredibly sharp. Their passing was better and they were lively on the break and they could have easily scored twice before they took the lead.

England looked like they were not at the races and not well set up.

OK, is there a danger we are getting carried away here? Potentially.

Let's have some calming words from Mirror's chief football writer John Cross, who has been speaking on Nicky Campbell's phone-in on BBC Radio 5 Live...

If Kane scores a couple of penalties against Switzerland. It will be proof we are reliving Italia 90 in some form of twisted and gut wrenching Episode of Quantum Leap!

    Alan

For those unaware, Gary Lineker scored two penalties for England in a 3-2 win over Cameroon in the 1990 World Cup in Italy after David Platt had clinched an extra-time victory against Belgium in the last-16 with an acrobatic volley. Anyone who manages to squeeze in a reference to Italia 90 and Quantum Leap - my favourite TV show of the 1990s - is all right by me, Alan!

"There was a point during that game where, I genuinely would’ve been more comfortable discussing the French election results.

"I thought, this isn’t the time for comedy, people are going to be in a very dark place, but it’s all fine now isn’t it? We are going to win the Euros.

"I tell you what you don’t want to do, if you want any confidence in England, is watch Spain afterwards."

As I leapt around the room at Bellingham's stunner, my wife was unimpressed. Apparently it was just luck, he kicked it over his shoulder and couldn't see where it was going.

  12. England's players rated - bottom halfpublished at 09:52 1 July

    England 2-1 Slovakia (aet)

Down into the bottom half of England's players...

It was definitely a frustrating night in Gelsenkirchen for Gareth Southgate's men. Arsenal's Bukayo Saka was rated with a score of 4.66. England's left-back issues didn't go away as Saka was moved into the left defensive channel after Kieran Trippier was substituted off.

Phil Foden, the Premier League's player of the season for the 2023/24 campaign, who will have been frustrated to have had a goal disallowed for offside, finished with a rating of 4.53.

According to Opta, England's skipper Harry Kane had an expected goal rate of 0.82 - the highest of any England player. The centre-forward had five attempts at goal, with only one being on target and was rated with a score of 4.36.

Newcastle's Trippier was the Three Lions' lowest ranked player with a score of 4.13.

    England 2-1 Slovakia (aet)

And here is another dose of reality...

We asked you to rate the players during England's 2-1 extra-time victory against Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024.

Three out of England's top-four highest ranked players played a role from the bench.

The Three Lions' highest rated plater in yesterday's game was Brentford's Ivan Toney who was substituted on in in the dying moments of the game (93:54) - 40 seconds later Jude Bellingham managed to score the leveller.

Chelsea's Cole Palmer finally got an opportunity to make an impact. Clocking up the majority of his Euros minutes in yesterday's victory, Chelsea's forward was ranked second with a score of 5.97.

Bellingham understandably is one of the top four, ranked third with a score of 5.63. While Eberechi Eze was rated as the fourth-best player with a score of 5.54.

Eze similar to Toney was late to the party being brought on in the last 10 minutes of normal time (83:19).

It had to take some magic from Jude Bellingham to keep us in this competition but he cannot keep pulling the rabbit out of the hat each time. The problem has been the same in every game and is so obvious even the crowd know this from the deafening whistles. Every time the passing from the back to midfield isn't penetrating through, so Slovakia push up and England just play keep ball at the back. It's becoming predictable and stifles our attacking options. In the Spanish game Marc Cucurella collected the ball from the back and brought it up to Georgia's penalty area within seconds, which in turn brought the whole Spanish attack into play. The Swiss will find their homework easy to do.

    Spain 4-1 Georgia

    Highlights: Spain 4-1 Georgia

Spain set up a blockbuster quarter-final tie with Euro 2024 hosts Germany by surviving an early scare to ease past Georgia.

Playing in their first major tournament, Georgia had to soak up heavy pressure from Spain early on but stunned those watching on at Cologne Stadium when they took a surprise lead after 18 minutes.

Spain defender Robin le Normand poked Otar Kakabadze's curling cross into his own net, finishing off a devastating counter-attack and silencing supporters behind their goal.

It sparked confidence in Georgia but Spain's pressure eventually paid off when Manchester City's Rodri drilled a shot into the bottom corner - beating goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who had another outstanding overall display.

Spain continued to excite in attack, stringing together countless chances, and capitalised when Fabian Ruiz nodded in a cross from 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Georgia continued to battle and Napoli winger Kvaratskhelia would have scored the goal of the tournament had his clever chip from the halfway line bounced a metre to the right instead of passing the post.

But despite Georgia's flair and unpredictability, Spain's accomplished possession game took control - Nico Williams striking powerfully into the roof of the net to make it 3-1, before Dani Olmo's precise finish capped things off.

OK, I don't really want to bring us all down from this footballing high, but it would be remiss not to flag a few things:

    1. Not everyone is getting carried away by England's last-gasp recovery - Gareth Southgate's side came within seconds of being dumped out of Euro 2024
    2. The football continued after the Three Lions scraped an extra-time win over Slovakia, with Spain bouncing back from conceding an early goal against Georgia to produce another masterclass of tournament football.

For anyone who can't see Jordan Pickford's face on the back page of the Star this morning, I will try to explain.

As the England goalkeeper dived down to collect the ball, with the time ticking closer to the final whistle of extra-time, he turned to supporters behind the goal and laughed hysterically - not out of pleasure, but you would assume a kind of tortured relief.

The Three Lions were safely through and the Everton stopper knew it.

The back page of the Star captures his reaction and proclaims: "This is how we ALL feel after that Jordan."

When I'm grey and old, what will I remember? A safe 2-0 win? No chance. A Bellingham worldie to pull us out of the pit? You bet. We may not win the tournament, we have been terrible 95% of the time, but will take that kind of win every day of the week.
