  5. Man Utd 'should be aiming for' top fourpublished at 13:13 Greenwich Mean Time

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Charles Mung'ala From Oyugis, Kenya: Hi Phil, can Man Utd still win the title? Or is it even too ambitious to talk of a top four finish?

Hello, Charles. I do not think Manchester United can win the title but they are only four points off a place in the top four so I think they should definitely be aiming for that.

There is also a renewed freshness about the club since the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

I am not saying they will make the top four, but they should certainly be aiming for it because there are places up for grabs.

    Man Utd 4-0 Everton

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, speaking to BBC Match of the Day after the win: "It was far from a perfect performance. We have to improve, you can feel that in the game. After 15 minutes, Everton controlled the game and it was difficult for us and we were losing the second balls.

"I felt that the players could solve some problems that we had as a team because of the quality that they have, but it was far from a perfect performance. But it was a really good result and a tough match."

Manchester United's win over Everton at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim is the biggest margin of victory for a permanent manager in their first home match in the competition for the club.

Marcus Rashford has now scored in back-to-back Premier League matches under Ruben Amorim (three goals), as many goals as he managed in his previous 23 matches under both Ruud van Nistelrooy and Erik ten Hag.

A quirk of Sunday's results ensured that Manchester United's goal difference jumped to +4, while Manchester City's defeat at Liverpool saw theirs drop to +3.

The Athletic report, external that this is the first time United have had a better goal difference than City after 10 or more games in a Premier League campaign since the end of 2012-13 - Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge of the club.

  9. Amorim collects first Premier League victorypublished at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time

Ruben Amorim collected his first Premier League victory in emphatic fashion as his Manchester United side easily put away lowly Everton at Old Trafford.

United drew at Ipswich last weekend in Amorim's first game in charge since replacing interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, before beating Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday.

On Sunday they were initially wasteful in the final third and had little control of the contest, but they were clinical once they broke through with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both scoring twice.

The hosts attempted to sign visiting defender Jarrad Branthwaite in the summer and it was a game to forget for the Everton defender, inadvertently contributing to United's first two goals.

Rashford's low strike deflected in off the centre-back's outstretched boot for the opener, before Branthwaite dawdled on the ball allowing Amad Diallo to nip in and feed Bruno Fernandes, who laid it off for Zirkzee to convert.

The Red Devils effectively ended the game as a contest just 20 seconds into the second half when the impressive Diallo slid a pass through to Rashford to convert and Dutchman Zirkzee coolly slotted United's fourth on 64 minutes to wrap up a comfortable victory.

International football's law makers meet in London this afternoon for their annual business meeting.

It means the heads of the 'home' FAs - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - plus world governing body Fifa discuss issues around the rules.

Chief among the discussion topics today will be the use of VAR - and an update on whether the current trial to allow referees to announce what has happened in stadiums should be expanded.

There are also a couple of law tweaks being proposed, one of which relates to whether a manager or a coach should be punished for catching a ball, which is clearly going out of play, before it crosses the line.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy has a lot on his plate ahead of his first game as Leicester boss on Tuesday.

The new Foxes manager welcomes West Ham to the King Power Stadium having had just two days to prepare.

He took training for the first time on Sunday after watching Saturday's dismal 4-1 defeat at Brentford from the stands following his appointment on a deal until 2027 on Friday.

Leicester have lost five or their last eight games and the fans turned on the squad and director of football Jon Rudkin during the defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

Van Nistelrooy, Leicester's fourth head coach in 20 months, faces the media this afternoon and needs to make an instant impact at the club with the Foxes a point above the relegation zone.

"He is at the end of the recovery time," Lopetegui confirmed.

Mohammed Kudus has completed his five-game suspension and is "fit and ready" to return to the matchday squad.

Centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo is the only injury doubt following Saturday's home defeat by Arsenal as he is awaiting further assessment.

  20. 'Conservative approach may be more likely to succeed' against Liverpoolpublished at 12:26 Greenwich Mean Time

    Phil McNulty Q&A

Nottingham Forest players celebrate scoring at AnfieldImage source, Getty Images

Ross, Port Seton: With the Nottingham Forest game showing a way to stifle Liverpool and to get a good result, will we see more teams try that way against them? And will it be more likely that one of those teams, rather than one of their title rivals, catches them out?

Hi Ross. There is no doubt Forest contained Liverpool in a way few others have done this season, by defending deep then showing real pace on the counter attack to inflict their only league defeat this season.

Liverpool still possess such pace on the counter themselves that a high line will always be a problem against them, as Aston Villa discovered to their cost at Anfield, so maybe a more conservative approach may be more likely to succeed – although I wouldn’t bank on it with the way Arne Slot’s side are playing.
