  2. 'Kane represents England brilliantly on the pitch and off it'published at 12:50 British Summer Time 10 September

    Henry Winter
Football writer on BBC Radio 5 Live

[Harry Kane reaching 100 caps] is remarkable. Only nine other [male] footballers in England's history have done that. He's also been talking about the possibility of scoring 100 goals [for England]. He's on 66 goals at the moment and he's 31.

On the basis he's scored eight goals over the last year, he would need to still be playing at 35 to hit 100 goals. I think that's beyond him, but you can never rule it out with Kane.

It's his longevity and persistence. If you look at his career, the way he started out at Tottenham, he wasn't particularly valued or rated. There was a concern over whether he would actually make it. He went out on loan to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich, Leicester. Yet look at him now, he's playing for Bayern Munich and he's got the England goalscoring record, so I wouldn't rule out [100 goals].

He's a remarkable role model. I mentioned his longevity, his persistence, his resilience, but he also represents England in such a fantastic way in the work he does - with his foundation, on mental health, on London playing fields, on the environment. He's a very wholesome person and I think that he represents England brilliantly on the pitch and off it.

100 caps tonight will be a fantastic milestone for Kane and he deserves it. However, it should really be his last. If we are planning for the next World Cup, we don't want a 33 Yr old striker who was found wanting in the last big tournament this year.

The boys of ‘66 are a class apart and a class above. Moore, Charlton, Banks are the greatest. But Kane is next in the greatness scale! Two major finals, a World Cup semi-final and quarter-final, England’s all-time top scorer, World Cup & Euros Golden Boot winner. He’s not quite been able to get over the line [by winning a trophy], but he’s been closer than anyone since 1966 before him and his achievements outweigh the likes of Shearer, Rooney, Lineker and Robson by a significant amount.

Right, when faced with such stories, it puts all this football talk into context, doesn't it?

But it is nice to have something to discuss and debate, certainly takes your mind away from some of life's more pressing problems.

With that in mind, let's return to assessing the career of England captain Harry Kane, starting with the list of the Three Lions players to have reached 100 caps, which, all being well, the Bayern Munich striker will join when he plays against Finland at Wembley tonight...

George Burley managed Ipswich during their two previous stints in the Premier League and later took charge of the likes of Derby and Southampton, as well as being Scotland manager from 2008-2009.

Current Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna said: “This club has had some brilliant managers and George is right up there as one of the very best.

“It has been a pleasure to get to know George since I arrived at Ipswich. He is a positive and optimistic character, and I know he will also take that attitude into the battle he now faces. We are all right behind him.”

Ipswich chairman Mark Ashton added: “Our thoughts are with George, his wife Jill and their family. It’s always great to see him here in the directors’ box on a matchday and we will do everything we can to support one of our all-time greats, uniquely as both player and manager.”

The 68-year-old Scot has been involved in more matches than anybody else in the club’s history - 500 as a player and 413 as manager.

“After feeling unwell earlier this year, I have recently received a diagnosis and I am taking positive action to fight the disease,” he said.

“It has been a difficult time, but I am feeling much brighter now. In fact, I am able to get to matches at Portman Road and I am enjoying watching the team playing back in the Premier League.

“We are grateful to the club for the support they have shown me and my family and I would ask that everyone is respectful of our privacy at this time.”

Mentioning Harry Kane in the same breath as the ‘66 team is a bit of a joke. They won the World Cup, Kane has never won anything apart from ornamental boots to put on his mantle piece (do people still have those?)

Here is another gentle reminder to please include your name, especially if you want to criticise England's all-time leading goalscorer.

On your other point 'Anon', yes, people do still have 'mantelpieces', but generally without the ornamental Golden Boots...

  16. 100 goals is 'definitely possible'published at 11:28 British Summer Time 10 September

    England

Back to Harry Kane and his next target...reaching 100 goals after making his 100th England appearance.

"The goals were similar. I felt I was on 30 goals and then I went to 50 and then 60.

"It is definitely there and definitely possible. I feel like I am in a good place and these are good targets to try to reach.

"Some people may see them as unrealistic but I would rather go for something unrealistic and not quite make it rather than be comfortable just saying I will be happy with 70 or 80 goals."

  17. Rice red was the correct decision - KMI panelpublished at 11:14 British Summer Time 10 September

Referee Chris Kavanagh was right to send Declan Rice off in Arsenal's draw with Brighton, the Key Match Incidents panel has ruled.

The board - which reviews the big refereeing decisions in the Premier League each week - agreed the midfielder should have been dismissed.

Rice, who was already on a booking, nudged the ball away from Joel Veltman as he prepared to take a free kick in the 49th minute of Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brighton on 31 August.

It was the first red card of the England star's career, with the panel agreeing his actions were "clear, deliberate and impactful" and a second yellow card was correct.

The panel, which unanimously backed the decision 5-0, wrote: "Rice knows what he's doing, it's a gentle touch but once the referee sees it, he has no choice."

Arsenal were 1-0 up at the time after Kai Havertz's goal but Joao Pedro's leveller earned Brighton at point at the Emirates.

The KMI panel is independent and made up of three former players or coaches, one Premier League representative and one from the Professional Game Match Officials Board, the referees' body.

He is England's all-time leading goalscorer by some margin, so is it fair to assume he is the best ever striker to pull on the shirt?

Does he need to lift a trophy to be regarded among the very best England players from the 1966 era, such as Bobby Moore and Sir Bobby Charlton?
