Will Burnley, Sunderland and Leeds stay up?

  1. Promising start for promoted sidespublished at 12:52 BST 25 September

The newly promoted sides have gone straight back down in each of the previous two Premier League seasons without being particularly competitive, but the early signs suggest Sunderland, Leeds and Burnley will put up far more of a fight this term.

Those clubs already have a combined total of five wins and 19 points on the board, which represents the best start by top-flight newcomers since 2017.

At the same stage 12 months ago, Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton were still winless and had accumulated just seven points between them, setting the tone for largely miserable campaigns for all three clubs.

  3. Premier League tablepublished at 12:42 BST 25 September

Five games into the season and it has been a pretty positive start for the newly-promoted clubs.

Sunderland are seventh after a couple of impressive home wins, while Leeds are 12th but just a point behind them following their victory at Wolves last weekend.

It has been a little tougher for Burnley but they have four points on the board and are clear of the relegation places in 16th as it stands.

  6. Recap: Thursday's main talking pointspublished at 12:28 BST 25 September

This 'Angeball' chat is definitely getting fingers tapping - things you love to see - but let's do a little recap of the Carabao Cup reaction we brought you this morning, plus the Nottingham Forest top lines:

  7. Postecoglou finally set for first home gamepublished at 12:25 BST 25 September

Nottingham Forest v Sunderland (Sat, 17:30 BST)

Nottingham Forest's match against Sunderland on Saturday teatime will be Ange Postecoglou's fifth game in charge but his first at the City Ground.

After four away games, some encouraging performances but no wins, the Forest home faithful will finally have a chance to see, in the flesh, what their new manager is all about.

It is a very different approach to what they have been used to under Nuno Espirito Santo but having seen what the team is capable at Real Betis last night, especially in the first half, there will be a huge amount of intrigue to see how they get on on home soil.

Four winless games and a newly-promoted opponent means the pressure will be on, though, for Postecoglou's side to not only perform but take the three points...

The change that needs to happen, for Angeball, is giving the goalkeeper and defenders more freedom to adapt to the press. Play out from the back, sure but anticipate the traps that the best pressing sides set and go long before the trap is sprung.

  9. Wood must 'watch his back'published at 12:18 BST 25 September

What now for Wood, who was an unused substitute? And will Igor Jesus keep his place in the starting XI?

"Chris Wood definitely has to watch his back," said former Forest and West Ham forward Michail Antonio on TNT Sports.

"He definitely looks like a real threat. He even had a couple of other opportunities, half opportunities he took quite well as well. His movement, his hold-up play... he seems big, he seems strong."

Igor Jesus made his Brazil debut last October, scoring in a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in difficult conditions in Chile.

In June, he scored Botafogo's winner against European champions Paris St-Germain at the Club World Cup, with his performance in that game prompting South American football expert Tim Vickery to label him the modern-day version of former Ivory Coast and Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

Hi Alex, me again! Just to emphasise the point, the last clean sheet you mention against Manchester United was actually on the very first day of April! Quite a long time ago in terms of matches played.

Eyebrows were raised when Nottingham Forest's teamsheet dropped for their first European game in 29 years - and Chris Wood was on the bench.

After all, it was the New Zealand forward's 20 Premier League goals last season that helped propel Forest back into Europe.

Instead, head coach Ange Postecoglou put his trust in Igor Jesus, the 24-year-old who cost £10m from Botafogo in July.

And in Forest's Europa League opener, it did not take long for the Brazil striker to show why he could prove to be one of the Premier League's most exciting additions.

With his side trailing 1-0 to Real Betis in Seville, Igor Jesus levelled with a tap-in before heading Forest into a 2-1 lead from a corner less than five minutes later.

But former Manchester United forward Antony levelled in the 85th minute to deny Forest a victory in the first of eight league phase games.

  13. Luiz pulls hamstringpublished at 12:09 BST 25 September

Douglas Luiz spent the first three games of the season on the bench and did not play a minute following his arrival from Juventus.

However Wednesday night marked his third straight start since Ange Postecoglou arrived at the City Ground and saw him start the game well.

Luiz provided the assist for Igor Jesus' second goal to put Forest in the lead before he was substituted at half time.

“He’s pulled his hamstring, so we have to take him off,” Postecoglou confirmed when speaking to TNT Sports post-match.

It is unclear how long the Brazilian is out for but it is a big blow for Forest.

  14. Your questions answered: What is Ange-ball?published at 12:06 BST 25 September

    Ask Me Anything

Ange-ball is the football-playing philosophy used by new Nottingham Forest manager Ange Postecoglou.

This style was implemented during Postecoglou's time as Celtic and Tottenham boss.

The attacking and high-intensity football style relies on the creativity of players to dominate on the ball and relentless pressing to win it back.

Postecoglou is known for his use of inverted full-backs, high line approach, quick passes, and building play from the back.

The manager's football style aims to be entertaining, by showing ambition, excitement and bravery.

Postecoglou has rarely backed down from his principles, mostly focusing on attacking play to win games.

An example of this was in November 2023, when he did not drop his attacking philosophy despite Tottenham going down to nine men in a 4-1 loss to Chelsea.

He defended his decisions: "It's just who we are, mate. As long as I'm here, that's what we're going to do."

However, he did abandon so-called Ange-ball for Tottenham's 2025 Europa League final.

Postecoglou instead implemented a more defensive style to his side, earning them their first trophy in 17 years.

Now at Forest, Postecoglou said the change to his football style will be "a gradual process".

"It's just a matter of making it as smooth as possible," Postecoglou said in his first news conference as Forest manager.

I'm giving him time, I will admit he wasn’t my choice for manager. However, In the Swansea game and the Betis game we had fantastic starts. We were in control until the subs made at half time cost us as we didn’t carry on with the plan and intensity from first half.

A truly wonderful occasion and atmosphere. I don’t understand some of the negativity around Ange, I think we’ve played well in the last two games and it’s really exciting to watch. It should also be remembered that we came from behind yesterday.

  16. What are fans saying on social media?published at 11:58 BST 25 September

You can always rely on social media to spark footballing conversations and debates, and Nottingham Forest fans haven't been shy in their assessment of last night's performance.

Lots were happy to see 'Angeball' in full flow for the first 45 minutes, with Reds fan Sophie B saying on X that it was 'like watching Brazil in the first half but like watching Derby in the second half'.

Elsewhere, Jack Bryan - who follows the club home and away - said on X that it was 'the best 45 minutes' he had seen Forest play 'in years'.

If that wasn't enough praise, The Athletic's Nick Miller wrote on X: 'You can see why Postecoglou sides can be intoxicating. At some points in that first half I couldn't imagine Forest ever losing a game again'.

That could be aimed at me or my fellow Alex from 11:27.

And it is also what this live page is all about... debate.

For those wanting an answer to Carl's question, the last time Forest kept a clean sheet under Nuno Espirito Santo in a competitive game was their 1-0 Premier League win over Manchester United in April.

When was the last clean sheet under Nuno, Alex? Defensive issues had crept in well before Ange's arrival. We may have finished 7th but had fallen away badly due to a few key injuries, fatigue and an inability to break defensive teams down. Every confidence in Ange, give him time!

A point away at last season's Uefa Conference League finalists is almost certainly a good result for Forest and Ange Postecoglou.

On paper, that match was one of their toughest tests of their eight group phase fixtures.

But what is next on their European return?

    • Forest v FC Midtjylland - 2 October
    • Forest v FC Porto - 23 October
    • SK Sturm Graz v Forest - 6 November
    • Forest v Malmo FF - 27 November
    • FC Utrecht v Forest - 11 December
    • SC Braga v Forest - 22 January
    • Forest v Ferencvaros TC - 29 January

Our defensive solidity last season was reliant on a consistent and settled back four. In the international break, before Ange arrived, Aina was ruled out for three months and in his first game Murillo got injured within 30 minutes. It's not necessarily just his tactics.
