Vinicius Jr was named Uefa's man of the match. Fair enough seeing as he scored both Real's goals.

This is the 13th time Vinícius has scored two or more goals for Real Madrid in a game, with five of them coming this season.

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti to TNT Sports: "Interesting game. We could play better. We didn't play our best. We had problems in the first half with a low block, too deep. We started to put pressure and it was much better.

"We tried to change something in the second half. We started really well and conceded two goals when our moment was good.

"The game was difficult at 2-1 down.

"Bellingham was tired. He had cramps.

"Vinicius is starting to understand how it's important for him to move inside the pitch and not only close to the line. He learned really well how to move.

"[The second leg] will be exciting. Open. You never know what will happen."

The Santiago Bernabeu is the Mecca of football isn't it? Growing up it is the place everyone wants to play.

You think, 'It's Real Madrid, wow. It's magical.' You see their side walking out in the full white kit, the noise, the colour, the atmosphere of the stadium. It is just amazing. However you can't get wrapped up in all that.

By the time the whistle goes you forget about how many people are watching and just concentrate on the game. Don't forget too that Bayern Munich are not a small club themselves. They have history as well in this competition, and they can do it, they absolutely can. They have the players to do it.

Semi-final of the Champions League, these two teams, at that stadium. It doesn't get much bigger.

  5. 'All to play for next week'published at 22:31 British Summer Time 30 April 2024

FT: Bayern Munich 2-2 Real Madrid

    Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane told TNT Sports: "A little disappointed. Once we got 2-1 ahead we had two or three good chances. This is the Champions League semi-final. We expected a tough game. Real are one of the best teams in Europe who can punish you with one or two actions.

"All to play for next week. We know we can have chances next week we just have to take them.

"We started on the front foot. Their goal came against the run of play. We struggled to play our game. Second half we played with a higher intensity. We deserved our two goals, shame we couldn't get a third."

On what Jude Bellingham said to him before the penalty: "I don't know what he was saying. I saw him mumbling something. Once I'm in that moment, I'm in my zone, trying to block everyone out. I'm sure he was saying something to try to put me off."

On his goals: "It's been a good season so far. It's just about the next game. Everything we're fighting for this year is in this competition. It'll be tough. We have to go there with full belief.

"I'm here for many years. It's not a one-off year I'm here for. Of course at the start of the season the expectation was to win trophies. The Champions League is the biggest one. If we can somehow get our hands on that one it would be an amazing season.

"These are the big games. The atmosphere today was incredible. This is why I want to be playing in these big games, these big moments.

"It'll be tough. We know their history in this competition. We can take positives from today."

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo told Movistar: "If we couldn't win, we were determined not to lose. Given what went on tonight, a draw's a good result. We know the Champions League. We're accustomed to matches like this.

"I believe that teams think they've killed us off and that's when we are at our most dangerous.

"It was a spell of the match when we weren't actually all that terrific but we get the equaliser.

"Our first goal came from a magical pass from Toni Kroos. We all keep telling him to keep on playing for not just one more season but many seasons to come yet. He's genuinely a maestro with talent which people love to watch and we all love to play with."

  8. 'You can't gift the ball away'published at 22:20 British Summer Time 30 April 2024

FT: Bayern Munich 2-2 Real Madrid

    Real Madrid

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr, as quoted on Uefa.com: "We always play to win, want to win but we know what the Champions League is like – you can't gift the ball away, you can't concede goals because there will always be top rivals to take advantage.

"Right now, after this result, we need to keep our heads clear, be content with the position we are in and rest up as much as possible before the second leg."

I don't see either side with a clean sheet in the second leg, I think both sides will score which makes it intriguing. It is going to be about which side can take their chances.

Tonight there were four big mistakes, and the goals were scored that way. In the second leg it might be a bit of inspiration, a fantastic goal that comes from somewhere.

You don't know who is going to win this tie, you really don't. Favourites? Probably Real Madrid because they are back at home, but don't count this Bayern side out. You saw how they performed against Arsenal away from home, they have legs and could hit on the counter again.

Carlo Ancelotti has now managed in 10 Champions League semi-final ties, the joint-most of any manager, along with Pep Guardiola (10).

Five of those have come at Real Madrid, with only Alex Ferguson at Manchester United (seven) taking one team to more semis.

    Big player, big moment.

Never in doubt when Harry Kane is standing over the penalty spot. A top player, he will be pleased to have scored in a Champions League semi-final.

Harry Kane is the joint top scorer from Europe’s big five leagues in all competitions this season (43 – level with Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappe).

The Bayern striker has the most combined goals and assists of anyone (54)..

Real Madrid have drawn four consecutive games for the first time in the European Cup, but remain unbeaten in 11 games in the competition this term.

The last time they failed to win in four Champions League games was 2020.

However these four draws have involved coming through the last 16 against Napoli (second leg) and Manchester City (both legs) before winning that one on penalties.

Thomas Tuchel did really well at half-time to swap his wingers; Leroy Sane coming in from the right on his left foot and getting that first goal, then Jamal Musiala on the left coming in on his right foot and getting the penalty.

At 2-1 you're sitting there thinking the next 10 minutes are important, and they were dominant. But I didn't really think that they went for the game, and that was the key

Bayern being at home with the crowd behind them should have gone for the throat. They didn't and they've paid the price.

This is only the second Champions League semi-final match in which both teams scored a penalty.

The other was also between these teams, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben netting in a 2011-12 meeting.

Bit of a strange game really.

The goals were scored in moments where they didn't look like they were coming. It is tight between the teams, nicely poised for the second leg.

I think Real Madrid will be the happier of the teams, they had a little spell in the first half but didn't have prolonged periods of dominance that Bayern had. That will probably come at the Santiago Bernabeu.

We'll have to wait and see.

Bayern striker Harry Kane skips past the lunging Aurelien Tchouameni and puts a cross over everyone's head.

Tchouameni was lucky he didn't make contact with Kane there as it would have been another penalty.
