While the media were stood waiting for interviews, we could see the players celebrating in Wroclaw.

Striker Nicolas Jackson was dancing the way through the interview area blaring out loud African music (of some kind) from a boom box and shouting loudly.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was in charge of looking after the large Conference League trophy and hauled it over his shoulder.

Several players already had beers on the go but winger Noni Madueke opted for champagne. It would have been a late night at the team hotel as Chelsea traditionally party immediately and on-site after winning European silverware.

Respect to Chelsea, you can only beat what's in front of you but the teams they beat to get here were so easy. It's not Chelsea's fault but I just don't see the need for the Conference League anymore. It's always going to be won by one of the top five leagues because all the other good teams are in the two leagues above. A great win for Chelsea but I think we should consider what the point of the Conference League is.

Cole Palmer in Chelsea's post-match news conference: "It's a good feeling for us and the fans. We just picked up the intensity and put on a good performance in the second half.

On his assists: "I was just sick of getting the ball and going backwards and sideways. I thought when I next get the ball I’m going to go and it worked.

"There was a bit of space chopping and changing and I saw Enzo [Fernandez] running, so I just put it over the top."

On Gary Neville calling Chelsea "billion-pound bottlejobs", external as they lost last season's League Cup final: "I wouldn’t say I was hurt, I didn’t pay attention to be honest. We showed on Sunday [at Nottingham Forest] we can go to a tough place and win. Tonight, even when we were losing I feel like we showed good character again and came back."

Tosin Adarabioyo on Cole Palmer during Chelsea's post-match news conference: "If you saw what he did today, it was crazy to be honest.

"Two very special individual moments where he was able to hold onto the ball and provide bundles of quality to put the ball onto Enzo [Fernandez] and Nico [Jackson] to score two great goals. He completely changed the game and that’s what he does, man."

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Chelsea fan and Goal Diggers podcaster Teema Nicholls speaking to 5 Live Breakfast earlier: "I'm absolutely delighted. We've completed Europe.

"This is a coming of age moment for this team. In the first half, we weren’t amazing, but to come back and win emphatically is unbelievable.

"In terms of our rivals, if Chelsea didn't win it, they would have ripped us mercifully. Trophies are there to be won. You can only beat what’s in front of you."

On Cole Palmer: "There were question marks earlier in the season about whether he turns up for big games and I think he answered that yesterday.

"He was absolutely unbelievable and unplayable in the second half. We definitely have him to thank for pulling us through and ensuring we got our hands on that trophy."

  6. Chelsea fans are happy but want morepublished at 12:09 British Summer Time 29 May

Chelsea supporters will be happy, for now, but they will soon be demanding this is a springboard for greater success.

That lack of excitement about this final was on show in the attendances. Betis sold out their allocation and dominated the neutral parts of the stadium, while the Blues only sold 11,000 of their 12,500 tickets.

There is also no parade in London to celebrate this as players stayed over one night in Poland. Next stop is the Club World Cup, with non-international players getting 10 days off, but many Chelsea players are going to play for their national teams straight after the party.

£1bn. Of course Chelsea should walk the Conference League.

    Jon, York

Anything other than a Chelsea win would’ve been embarrassing. Would like to see the Conference League have a spending cap. Something like £100m max over three seasons. If you are over you can’t compete and give smaller teams a chance if European glory.

  8. How many goals did Chelsea score in their Conference League campaign?published at 12:01 British Summer Time 29 May

    Real Betis 1-4 Chelsea

Chelsea cruised through their Conference League campaign, with every group game won by two or more goals and every knockout tie won by two or more goals (on aggregate).

The biggest win was the 8-0 rout of Armenian side FC Noah in November. That was the joint-second biggest win in Chelsea's history and the Conference League's biggest victory so far.

That took them to 16 goals in their first three league games, and they ended the league phase on 26 in six games. Including the qualifiers, they scored 45 times in 15 games to finish as the tournament's top scorers.

The Blues never trailed in any knockout round. Abde Ezzalzouli's first-half goal in the final gave them a scare but they took command after the break.

After a 5-1 win over Shamrock Rovers in December, the Irish side's manager Stephen Bradley said: "If they want to, they can show up and probably put another two XIs out there and win this competition.

"If they're in the Champions League they could go close to winning that. That's the level they have."

This may come across as unduly harsh - but Maresca needed to win the final and the Forest game. If we’d not qualified for Champions League and won the Conference League, it would have been a very poor season and many Chelsea fans would be blaming Maresca for it. He has previously been very stubborn in his refusal to change his tactics (always using an inverted full-back, playing slowly from the back and a lack of width to our play despite having so many attacking wide players on the books). Credit to him then for changing his tactics in both matches (sitting deep and playing counter-attacking football against Forest and then bringing in James for Gusto and going more direct against Betis yesterday). It feels like Maresca is evolving as much as the players are.

Chelsea's changes made per Conference League game

Rotating and resting players in secondary cups is not a new phenomenon - but Chelsea took it to a new level in the Conference League this season.

They averaged 8.5 changes per European game, based on their previous Premier League line-up.

In the league stage there was a recognised Premier League team and a Conference League XI - with very little overlap. They were much changed in the domestic cups too, although fell at the second hurdle in both.

England forward Cole Palmer, their star player, was not even registered in Europe until the knockout games.

As the Blues started playing in knockout games they started using more first-team players, like Palmer, Moises Caicedo and Marc Cucurella.

Mykhailo Mudryk watched from the stands in Wroclaw as Enzo Maresca's squad lifted their first trophy together.

The Ukraine international has rarely been seen since he was provisionally banned five months ago for failing a drugs test.

However, he met a lot of fans having attended the match as a fan and is not barred from receiving a medal. Mudryk also posted a picture to his Instagram stories of himself partying with midfielder Enzo Fernandez, external at the team hotel in Poland.

It's been a long Conference League campaign for Chelsea and they've clocked up a fair few air miles along the way.

Before suggesting team-mate Tosin Adarabioyo as player of the tournament, Cole Palmer talked in the post-match news conference about travelling to Kazakhstan in the league phase - although he didn't make the journey himself.

"Ask Tosin, he didn't really enjoy it because the flight was 11 hours," said Palmer. "To come back now and win the tournament is a great feeling."

Defender Adarabioyo was an unused substitute in the final but made 12 starts in the competition, while winger Mykhailo Mudryk started their first six games before being banned after testing positive for a banned substance.

Reading all the love for Palmer, which is deserved, but for me it's Reece James who changed the game. I've doubted his ability to become a Terry-like leader but the last 6 weeks have changed my mind. He's stepped up off the field and been very good, but not great on. Exciting times if Enzo, Moises, Reece and Cole can all play well at the same time. Mike - New Forest

  16. Maresca fixed the defence to attack betterpublished at 11:11 British Summer Time 29 May

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer was rightly awarded the man of the match award last night after becoming the first player to get two assists in a European final since Marcelo in 2018.

However, this final wasn't easy and Real Betis could have been more than 1-0 at half-time.

Manager Enzo Maresca fixed his defence by taking out Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile for Reece James and Levi Colwill, which sparked a better attacking performance as Chelsea could then build out from the back better.

It was hard on Badiashile, who hadn't played for 20 days, with Gusto only playing 28 minutes of football in that time, which saw them both make their last start in a Conference League dead rubber against Djurgarden.

Imagine getting 23 goal involvements in the Premier League and being “Back” in the same system, that’s a testament to how good the guy is. Those two assists yesterday were perfect. He took a chance and bet on himself when he left City and it paid off. Clearly got a lot of strength and confidence.

Cole Palmer is an absolute genius. We don't produce these players. They don't fall off trees.
