In terms of prize money, Chelsea's reward for beating Real Betis in the final amounts to about £2.5m, according to the Uefa website.

Over the course of the competition, they will have earned much more than that though.

Qualification from the league phase earned sides about £167,000 while passage into the last 16 added £670,000 to that total.

The prize money significantly jumped from there, with qualification for the quarter-finals netting each club more than £1m, semi-finals just over £2m and victory in the semi-final earned each team roughly £3.3m.

In total, Chelsea's performance in the competition will have earned them around £9-10m.

Winning a trophy is a big deal whenever you do it but I just think it's so important for this young group of players who they expect so much from.

I think it's a major step forward for the club. Champions League football plus the trophy.

I said in the match commentary ‘Cold Palmer is back’.

That’s his celebration, that’s him and the way he played in that second half - absolutely brilliant.

I’m not trying to compare him with Didier Drogba, for example, who would score every time on those big occasions, but this is kind of moving along those lines, someone like Cole Palmer.

They need someone to take over, take the reins, direct this team, this group of young players. Cole Palmer is obviously a young player as well but he has got an incredible amount of maturity and the ability to deal with the big occasions. That’s what he’s done tonight once again.

  9. Why did Maresca leave Palmer out of squad for league phase?published at 08:17 British Summer Time 29 May

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca decided to leave Cole Palmer out of his squad for the league phase of the Conference League to help with Palmer's "load management" after he helped England reach the Euro 2024 final.

The 23-year-old forward was added to the Blues' squad for the knockout stage, during which he played six games, with his two assists on Wednesday giving him three in total in the Conference League.

Palmer has finished the 2024-25 season with 46 appearances and 27 goal involvements (15 goals, 12 assists). Not bad for a 'tricky' second season.

His performance in Wednesday's final also vindicates Maresca leaving him out earlier in the competition and should stand Palmer in good stead given Chelsea are about to play in the Club World Cup too.

Huge win for Chelsea, Maresca and the players. Yes, we have won plenty of trophies before but this is the start of a new era. I’ve been really impressed with Chelsea, fantastic season. I am a bit worried about next season because of the Club World Cup.

The balance of the team wasn't right until Reece James, Levi Colwill and Jadon Sancho came on.

Cole Palmer changed the way he played at that point, and he was looking for those runs.

Palmer has delivered and that's the difference. He is a young player, but has an incredible amount of maturity.

And it did not take long for Chelsea to turn the game, with Cole Palmer making goals for Enzo Fernandez on 65 minutes and Nicolas Jackson on 70.

After a stellar first season at Stamford Bridge, during which he scored 22 Premier League goals, Cole Palmer has endured a trickier second campaign.

He has scored just once since 14 January, a 90th-minute penalty in the 3-1 win over Liverpool at the start of May.

But he reminded everyone of his raw ability against Real Betis, and his 18-game goal drought will benefit him in the long run, according to head coach Enzo Maresca.

"The bad moment, the bad run he had during this season, is going to make him a better player, no doubt," said Maresca.

"We all know he's a top player. We need to help him to be in the right position, the right moment.

"He is a quality player. In the last third, he can decide a game with a goal or assist."

Chelsea's victory brought an end to a remarkable run for Spanish teams in Europe. The Blues became the first foreign team to beat a Spanish side in a final in more than 20 years.

Spanish teams had won the past 27 finals in men's European club or international football to involve a side from that country.

That run started with Real Madrid's 2-1 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2002 Champions League final at Hampden, which included that goal from Zinedine Zidane.

Chelsea captain Reece James did not start Wednesday's final but he replaced right-back Malo Gusto at half-time, taking the captain's armband from Enzo Fernandez, and helped the Blues fight back.

Speaking to TNT Sports, James said: "It's a great feeling. As the game went on we grew into it and thankfully we scored four goals in the second half.

"Coming into this competition was something we had to win. Next season we go again in the Champions League."

On not starting the game: "Of course it is devastating to know you are not starting in a final.

"I want to play every game but it was the manager's decision. Once he made the decision, I had to move on and accept it and be ready when I was needed."

On his half-time words to his team-mates: "I thought in the first half we were flat. The game didn't go our way early on and it looked like it took a lot out of us. We needed a reaction in the second half and we got it."

With Enzo Maresca's side trailing just past the hour mark, Cole Palmer took control - as he has done so often in the blue of Chelsea.

He provided two assists in the space of five minutes to turn the game on its head and send the side on their way to the Conference League title.

With those, Palmer became the first player to assist twice in the final of a major European competition since Marcelo for Real Madrid against Liverpool in the 2017-18 Champions League.

And just for good measure - he was also awarded Player of the Match at the full-time whistle.
