This will be the first competitive meeting between Plymouth Argyle and Sutton United. The Pilgrims have won five of their last six FA Cup ties against League Two sides, though they did go out to fourth tier Grimsby Town in last season’s competition.
This will be Sutton United’s first FA Cup game against a Championship side since they beat Leeds United 1-0 in the fourth round in 2016-17.
Though they’ve suffered the fourth most (46) FA Cup third round exits in the current format of the competition (since 1925-26), Plymouth have won their last two at this stage (2020-21 and 2021-22).
This is Sutton United’s sixth appearance in the FA Cup third round – they’ve alternated between progression (1970, 1989, 2017) and elimination (1988 and 1994) in these ties.
Sutton United’s Harry Smith has scored 10 goals in his 12 appearances in the FA Cup proper. He’s netted at least twice in three different games in the competition, including a brace for Sutton in their first round win over AFC Fylde this season.
