Newcastle come from behind to beat Bromley

Newcastle came from behind to beat League Two Bromley in the FA Cup and make it eight consecutive victories in all competitions.

Bromley, playing Premier League opposition for the first time in their history, took an early surprise lead at St James' Park.

Newcastle had failed to deal with a long delivery and Cameron Congreve curled the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the box.

But the Magpies levelled with a wonderful strike of their own when Lewis Miley fired a brilliant effort in from 25 yards out.

Newcastle took the lead early in the second half with substitute Anthony Gordon scoring a penalty after Matt Targett was fouled.

William Osula scored his first goal for the club as he ran down the right, cut inside and smashed a fine shot into the far corner.

Bromley, managed by ex-Newcastle goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman, will be proud of their performance despite the defeat.

This is the London side's first season in the Football League in their 132-year history - and they had never been this far in the FA Cup before.

Things could have been different had Danny Imray made it 2-0 when he ran 70 yards down the right before flashing a shot wide prior to Newcastle's equaliser.

"Who knows if we'd have got that," said Woodman.

"It was lovely. We got the goal that gave us a little bit of hope. That's what the FA Cup is about.

"I'm proud of my team. The way we got beaten was the right way to get beaten."

Good day at the office for Newcastle

Unlike many of the ties this weekend, this game was played in front of a capacity crowd at St James' Park.

Newcastle fans are loving every chance at the moment to watch their team, who have won every game in the past month.

Manager Eddie Howe made nine changes to the side that beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg on 7 January - and after a slow start he may have been worried.

But their comeback has given him plenty to be positive about.

Full-back Targett, who was making his first start since November 2023 after injury nightmares, set up Miley's equaliser and won the penalty for Gordon to make it 3-1.

Midfielder Miley, 18, was making only his fourth appearance since March 2024 following a couple of injuries. His long-range screamer was only his second goal for the club.

"It was important we responded," Howe told BBC Sport. "The longer it goes on the more anxiety can creep in. What a brilliant finish from Lewis Miley. From that moment we settled into the game.

"Lewis played very well. He brings loads of composure and quality on the ball."

But with the score at 1-1 at half-time, Howe was not taking any chances and sent key pair Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes on.

Four minutes later Gordon had sent goalkeeper Grant Smith the wrong way from the spot.

And £15m summer signing from Sheffield United Osula netted his first Magpies goal in some style.

Newcastle never really looked back after that and handed a debut to 17-year-old winger Trevan Sanusi.

They could have won by more with Harvey Barnes and Miguel Almiron going close too.
