After winning three of their first four meetings with Barcelona in all competitions between 1972 and 1985 (L1), FC Porto have lost each of their last four against them, including all three in the UEFA Champions League.
This is the first UEFA Champions League meeting between Porto and Barcelona since the 1999-00 campaign, with Barcelona winning 4-2 at home and 2-0 away in the second group stage. It's the first meeting between the sides in any competition since Barcelona's 2-0 win in the 2011 UEFA Super Cup.
Of the six different Spanish teams that FC Porto have faced in the UEFA Champions League, Barcelona are the only one who they are yet to beat in the competition (three defeats in three meetings).
Barcelona’s last trip to face a Portuguese side in the UEFA Champions League ended in a 3-0 defeat at Benfica, in September 2021 under Ronald Koeman. Prior to that, Barcelona had been unbeaten in their first five away games against Portuguese opposition in the competition, all under different managers (W4 D1 – Louis van Gaal, Frank Rijkaard, Pep Guardiola, Tito Vilanova and Ernesto Valverde).
FC Porto could win their opening two games of a UEFA Champions League campaign for the first time since 2012-13, under Vítor Pereira. However, they have lost their first home game in the group stage in each of the last two campaigns, losing 5-1 to Liverpool in 2021-22 and 4-0 to Club Brugge last season.
Barcelona have lost four of their last six UEFA Champions League group stage away games (W2), as many as their previous 43 beforehand (W26 D13 L4). They’ve lost their first away game in both of the last two seasons in the competition (0-3 v Benfica in 2021-22, 0-2 v FC Bayern München in 2022-23).
Barcelona had 33 open play sequences of 10+ passes on MD1 against Royal Antwerp, the most of any side in the 2023-24 competition; 15 of these led to a shot or touch in the opposition’s box, also a tournament-high.
Pepe made 104 passes against Shakhtar Donetsk on MD1 (98 successful), just the third Porto player on record (from 2003-04) to attempt 100+ in a UEFA Champions League game, after Pepe himself against Rangers in November 2005 (106) and João Moutinho against Dinamo Zagreb in November 2012 (123). At 40 years old, he was the oldest player on record to play 100+ passes in a game in the competition.
Galeno was directly involved in all three of FC Porto’s goals against Shakhtar Donetsk on MD1 (two goals, one assist), equalling his total combined goals and assists from his first UEFA Champions League campaign in 2022-23 (3).
João Félix scored twice in his first UEFA Champions League appearance for Barcelona on MD1 (v Antwerp), and could become just the fourth player to score in his first two games for the club in the competition, after Luis Enrique (1997), Deco (2004) and David Villa (2010).
