  2. Sutton's predictions: Brentford v Man Citypublished at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February

Brentford v Man City (20:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    BBC Sport

Brentford did the double over Manchester City last season, and they are about to play each other twice in the space of two weeks.

I don't see a repeat of that Bees success, however. City have got Haaland back from injury and even though he had his boots on the wrong feet against Burnley on Wednesday, it is just a matter of time before he is back among the goals.

He reminded me a bit of my time at Chelsea, when I was like Bambi on ice in front of goal, but once he is back up to speed it is going to be a very different story.

Brentford will score, because everyone seems to score against City these days - even Burnley - but City will score more.

Pep Guardiola's side are just so efficient at the moment and Brentford's only hope is to hit them on the break. I don't see it working out.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-3

  3. Pick of the statspublished at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February

Brentford v Man City (20:00 GMT)

    • Brentford were one of just four teams to beat Manchester City in the Premier League last season, and the only team to do the double over them. The Bees are aiming to be the first team to beat City three times in a row since Liverpool in 2015 and 2016.
    • But Brentford have lost six of their past seven Premier League matches, and Thomas Frank's side haven't kept a clean sheet in any of their last 11 Premier League games.
    • Ivan Toney has scored in each of his last four Premier League home appearances.
    • Neal Maupay has scored in all four of Brentford's games in 2024.
    • Manchester City are aiming for a fifth consecutive league win, having won their last eight in all competitions.
    • They are unbeaten in all 11 Monday Premier League fixtures under Pep Guardiola (W9, D2).
    • Guardiola has never lost three consecutive top-flight meetings against the same opponent.
    • Brentford are the only one of the 21 Premier League sides that Erling Haaland has faced but not scored against.
  4. Early team newspublished at 14:53 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February

Brentford v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Brentford defender Sergio Reguilon is available after being ineligible to face parent club Tottenham in midweek.

Aaron Hickey, Rico Henry, Kevin Schade and Bryan Mbeumo remain sidelined with injury.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland is set to start after making his return from a foot injury as a midweek substitute against Burnley.

City have no fresh injuries, with defender Manuel Akanji fit again after a knee problem.

Nottingham Forest v Bristol City (Tuesday, 19.45 GMT)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed at his press conference this afternoon that striker Chris Wood will be out “for some time” with a hamstring injury.

Asked about Joe Worrall's possible departure from the club, Nuno added: "The deal is being negotiated, we think everything is going well. Have to wait for final situation. Joe was club captain and it was an honour. Everyone wants to find good solution and we wish him very well for the future and hope he can play and enjoy himself in Turkey."

The centre-back was a top target for Premier League strugglers Sheffield United in the January transfer window but a deal failed to materialise.

The Turkish transfer window closes on Friday.

Neil, a worried Blue: Hi Phil - what are your thoughts on Everton’s chances and do you see them getting any points back from the appeal?

Phil: Hello Neil. I have a gut feeling (no more) that they may get some points back on appeal but then, of course, they have a second charge to deal with, which we know they will defend just as robustly.

I did state on this Q&A a while back that I thought they would stay up even if they had 12 points deducted. I still think Everton will stay up (although the second charge is a great unknown) but they need to get Abdoulaye Doucoure back as quick as possible. He has been so important this season.

Everton are solid and well organised at the back but lack cutting edge up front. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has to start finding the target with some semblance of regularity as I am not sold on Beto at all.

Gary, Ipswich: Hi Phil, if Roy leaves Crystal Palace who do you bring in to replace him? Which managers deserve a shot with Palace?

Phil: Afternoon, Gary. I think you are looking at the names that have been mentioned, such as Steve Cooper or Julen Lopetegui. The only question is whether they will take the job before the end of the season should Roy go or prefer to wait until the summer.

Paddy McCarthy, who is a member of Hodgson’s management team, is highly regarded and been touted as a future Palace manager but is the time right?

Obviously, this all hinges on how it all pans out for Roy Hodgson.

Geoff, Hatters fan: What do you think of the Ross Barkley for England call, Phil?

Phil: Hello, Geoff. If I am being brutally honest I think that ship has probably sailed but the rejuvenation of such a talented footballer who appeared to have lost his way has been one of the great things about this season.

Be selfish and just enjoy what Ross is giving to Luton Town and don’t worry about England. He looks totally re-born, fit and full of confidence and will be vital to the rest of your season. No distractions.

On a separate note, I have to congratulate Luton Town and manager Rob Edwards. They have been an absolute breath of fresh air and may make a mockery of my prediction that they will be relegated.

I’m at Kenilworth Road for the Manchester United game on 18 February and can’t wait to sample the atmosphere again.

Shamir, London: Hi Phil. Why did Erik ten Hag allow Lisandro Martinez to play on when United were 2-0 up, and he was clearly suffering? Is this an example of wishcasting or poor management?

Phil: Hello Shamir. I can only believe Ten Hag was acting on the medical advice he received at the time. I don’t think he would have left Martinez on if he feared it was going to result in further serious injury, which sadly it appears it has. I’m sure Ten Hag now wishes he had taken him off right away but this is all with the benefit of hindsight.

Strata: Phil, Crystal Palace - do you believe the fans have a case to claim their club is in crisis?

Phil: Crisis is a strong word but there is no doubt there is a lot of very understandable unrest around Palace at the moment. There seems to be a sense of aimless drift at Palace and around manager Roy Hodgson at the moment, with people effectively waiting for the end of his reign, whether it comes at the of the season or sooner.

Poor results and performances are, quite rightly, increasing the sense of worry and the problem with drifting is that you can suddenly find yourself drifting into real trouble then struggle to get out of it.

I agree these are very troubling times for Palace and their fans. They should be doing a lot better.

Edward, Brighton: Do you think Roberto De Zerbi will be a candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp? We have an outstanding manager on our hands at Brighton and don’t want to lose him.

Phil: Hi Edward. I have absolutely no doubt De Zerbi will be in the conversations about appointing Liverpool’s next manager but I have my doubts it will be him. I still have a feeling that once all the talking stops Xabi Alonso will return to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen.

I have been wrong on the odd occasion before though.

@TimHammer1825 on X: Why did Chelsea spend so much cash on their midfield and not more on 1) a proven striker (Jackson played for a low-scoring Villarreal side) and 2) freshening up their defence (Disasi was never going to be the answer). They can’t score and they can’t defend.

Phil: Tim, you are probably asking the question that pretty much every Chelsea fan will be asking – especially point 1.

How Chelsea can spend the wild amount of money they have and not used some of it to sign a proven goalscorer simply hints at the scattergun, dysfunctional and unstructured transfer strategy that has landed them in their current mess.

I actually have no answer as to why they didn’t spend some of the huge sums lavished on midfield players on a proven striker except to say it reflects incredibly badly on how the club is being run that they didn’t.

@Andy_wxh on X: Hi Phil. Any idea of the latest on Everton’s takeover from 777? Do you know if the appeal against the points deduction is affecting the process of the takeover? Thanks.

Phil: Hello, Andy. It’s all gone very quiet hasn’t it? You would have thought if things were straightforward with 777 it would have been signed off by now but it’s dragging. Maybe things will become clearer when the result of Everton’s appeal against their 10-point deduction is announced, which is expected in mid-February.

Sorry I can’t be more informative than that but everyone seems a bit in the dark at the moment and the uncertainty is not ideal for anyone.

@ChrisGill95 on X: All hail Gary O’Neil at Wolves. He’s doing a great job at Molineux which goes to show – in Chelsea’s case with Poch at least – it’s not always the big managerial names you need to revitalise a football club.

Phil: Spot on, Chris. O’Neil is doing a superb job in the same understated way he did at Bournemouth, when he was very unlucky to be sacked. Wolves look like they have made a great choice.

As for Pochettino, he was pretty much last man standing in Chelsea’s search for a manager after all the churn and he just does not look like a settled figure at Stamford Bridge. He does not seem to have a handle on the job at all yet, which surprises me because he was so good at Southampton and Spurs.
