Summary

  1. When did the FA Cup semi-finalists last reach a final?published at 09:58 British Summer Time 31 March

For Manchester City, that's a simple answer - last season, when they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

For the others, we have to go back a bit further. Not much further in the case of Aston Villa though, as they last played at Wembley in the 2020 League Cup final.

A Villa side managed by Dean Smith and captained by future City player Jack Grealish were beaten 2-1 - by Manchester City.

Crystal Palace last reached a major final in 2016, when they led Manchester United in the FA Cup final - leading Alan Pardew to bust out some dance moves - only for United to equalise three minutes later and eventually win 2-1 after extra time.

For Nottingham Forest, we have to go back much further for their most recent major cup final - the 1992 League Cup final. Good heavens, this is the pre-Premier League era.

It was the last final Forest reached under the management of Brian Clough, and they had won the League Cup four times under his management. Not here though, as Brian McClair's early goal earned a 1-0 victory for Manchester United.

So three of the four semi-finalists lost to Man Utd in their last major final - the other were beaten by Man City. Manchester supremacy.

  2. Can the 'big six' stranglehold be broken?published at 09:56 British Summer Time 31 March

Since Wimbledon's shock triumph in 1988, only four teams outside of the 'big six' have lifted the trophy - Everton in 1995, Portsmouth in 2008, Wigan in 2013 and Leicester City four years ago (pictured).

Even Spurs, technically part of the elite group, have lifted the FA Cup just once in that period - in 1991.

That means five teams have accounted for 31 of the past 36 FA Cup victories.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea have shared the glory only between themselves.

But this could be the year an unfancied team triumphs - unless City, who have reached the semi-finals a record seven times in a row, prevail again.

  3. FA Cup 'sparkle' returns - will there be a 'fairytale ending'?published at 09:54 British Summer Time 31 March

Many of the big dogs have gone out already - not because they didn't care, but because they simply weren't good enough.

The FA Cup seems to have its sparkle back and, with a bit of luck, it might even have the first magical fairytale ending we have seen since Wigan in 2013.

Nottingham Forest will take on Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley Stadium, while Crystal Palace will face Aston Villa.

The semi-finals will take place on the weekend of Saturday, 26 April.

I thought it was going to be a lot more closer game but Crystal Palace just went to Craven Cottage and dismantled Fulham. This result caught me off guard.

Fulham had no answers to Palace. You would have given them the edge because they are having a great season under Marco Silva.

But Palace were just a class above. They have got so many great players.

And when you look at the four teams left in the competition, you can say that Palace are the only ones who can concentrate on just the FA Cup.

  7. Eze, Wembley and Taylor Swiftpublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 31 March

Oliver Glasner has been to Wembley three times and only ever on the Tube. Twice to watch England play and once when he dropped his daughter off to watch a Taylor Swift concert.

One of those visits to the stadium was on Monday night as the Palace manager watched Eberechi Eze score his first goal for his country against Latvia.

Eze has had an inconsistent season and the England international's goal against Fulham was just his fifth of the season.

"I think Ebs is having quite a strange season," Glasner said. "Because he does not have many goals in the Premier League but he has had so many chances.

"So unlucky in so many situations, disallowed goals, deflected goals, hitting the post - he always keeps going.

"He has struggled with injuries, some strange injuries. I think his goal against Latvia, first goal for England, means a lot for him as a person and has helped him.

"He always has the confidence. We all know that he is an amazing finisher and that he can cut in on his right foot. We need this quality especially in his finishing and he helped us today."

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC Sport: "The season is not over. If this is the end today I wouldn't be happy.

"I think this is just the start of our crunch time. Two months now, hopefully we have 12 games to play. The good thing is we are in a good momentum and the players are in a good shape.

"The next two months we always stay together and we have many games and we can get into our best shape again.

"I think today, especially at the beginning, we were far away from this. We need to be at our best to win as many games as possible."

On what it would mean for Palace to win the FA Cup for the very first time: "I don't want to talk about winning a trophy because even in the next game we can't win a trophy. It is just the semi-finals.

"When you enter a cup competition it doesn't matter if you lose in round number one or the semi-finals, we enter the competition to win it.

"It is a great achievement to play the semi-final and especially in that environment at Wembley as it is always something special."

As a Palace fan, I'm absolutely buzzing right now. Our poor start to the season is now effectively behind us and we are just one win away from an FA Cup final. Oliver Glasner deserves the keys to the kingdom if we go all the way.

  10. Palace beat Fulham to book semi spotpublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 31 March

    Fulham 0-3 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace stunned Fulham at Craven Cottage as they won their fifth match in a row to reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

Fulham were on top for the first 30 minutes but could not take advantage of the dominance, with Rodrigo Muniz going closest for the home side.

The Eagles could barely get out of their half, before Eberechi Eze gave the visitors the lead against the run of play with an excellent strike in the 34th minute.

Eze, who scored his first England goal against Latvia in the recent international break, then had a huge part to play in the second goal when his cross was headed in at the near post by Ismaila Sarr.

Willian forced Dean Henderson into a good save but Marco Silva's side couldn't find a way back into the match, before Eddie Nketiah added a third, slotting the ball through Leno's legs.

  11. 'One of the best coaching performances we have ever seen'published at 09:32 British Summer Time 31 March

Brighton 0-0 Nottingham Forest (3-4 on penalties)

    Robert Earnshaw

Nuno Espirito Santo has put in one of the best coaching performances we have ever seen in the Premier League. Everybody would have had Nottingham Forest to be fighting relegation this year.

I just love what he's done, he's signed the right players and thought 'what are the best tactics for this team?' They're a counter-attacking team, high energy, and defensively they've just been a lot better.

He's given the platform to the attackers too, just look at Chris Wood. This is underrated in football, but he's given the players freedom and he's not too on top of them. He gives the players the right platform to express themselves, and I think that's been the difference.

We don't give Nuno Espirito Santo enough credit for what he does and how he runs Nottingham Forest tactically.

But I think Forest's priority will be sealing that Champions League qualification. The belief is there that they can get it done. Beating Brighton in the FA Cup is a fantastic bonus that they can add on to an already sensational season.

I think nine out of 10 Forest fans will pick Champions League qualification over the FA Cup.

Well, what a weekend for everyone connected with Nottingham Forest. If you had said at the start of the season that we would be third in the league with Champions League almost confirmed and a date at Wembley for a FA Cup semi final you would have said no chance.

I think Forest will fancy themselves against Man City. Of course they didn't want that draw, you don't want Man City in the semi-finals. You want Man City in the final to try and cause an upset.

Man City are still an incredible team, that's seven consecutive semi-finals. They've been underperforming, but let's not underestimate this team. This is a top, top team.

Nottingham Forest would be fine to face Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals, with the season they have had and how they have played City before.

City have lost that aura of invincibility while Forest will be going into that game with full of confidence that they can get a result.

Penalty shootouts have become the norm for Forest in the FA Cup this season.

After a routine 2-0 win over Luton in the third round, Nuno Espirito Santo's side required spot-kicks to overcome League One's Exeter City and then Premier League strugglers Ipswich.

Matz Sels went the right way to deny a lacklustre strike from Jack Hinshelwood before standing tall and getting a strong hand to Diego Gomez's powerful hit.

"In penalty shootouts you always need a little bit of luck but I'm really happy," the Belgium keeper said afterwards.

Sels, who has kept 12 clean sheets in the league this season, was also integral in Forest's two previous shootouts - with the decisive save against Ipswich after stopping one of Exeter's spot-kicks in the fourth round.

  18. Forest beat Brighton on pens to reach semispublished at 09:05 British Summer Time 31 March

Brighton 0-0 Nottingham Forest (Forest win 4-3 on penalties)

    Emily Salley
    BBC Sport

Nottingham Forest won a third straight FA Cup penalty shootout to beat Brighton and reach the semi-finals for the first time in 34 years.

Goalkeeper Matz Sels was the hero for the visitors, saving Jack Hinshelwood and Diego Gomez's spot-kicks as Forest won the shootout 4-3 after the match had finished goalless.

In a drab tie that lacked quality throughout, there was nothing to separate the two teams after 120 minutes at Amex Stadium.

After two big saves from Sels, it was Forest captain Ryan Yates who stepped up to fire the club into their first FA Cup semi-final since 1991.

Forest also beat Exeter City and Ipswich on penalties in the previous rounds.

So, who will win the cup - and who do you want to win it? Can Crystal Palace win a major trophy for the first time in their history? Or will Man City recover some pride from their poor season?

    BBC 5 Live Breakfast

Aston Villa legend Ian Taylor speaking to BBC 5 Live Breakfast about Villans manager Unai Emery: "It would be fantastic to win the FA Cup. A lot of Villa fans wouldn't have dreamed about getting to a cup final, but since Unai Emery has come in he's just changed the whole club. Being in the Champions League where we are is unbelievable, now we also have an FA Cup semi-final.

"Tactically, Emery is one of the best out there. He's gradually changed the whole philosophy of the football club. Villa fans have had to be patient with the way he wants to play, but everyone has fully bought in to what he wants to do. The mindset is totally different, we are really heading in the right direction."
