After losing their first European game against Lazio in March 1998 in the UEFA Cup, Atlético de Madrid are unbeaten in four games against the Italian side (W2 D2), drawing 1-1 earlier this season on MD1 of the UEFA Champions League.
Lazio have lost eight of their nine away major European matches in Spain – the other, however, was a 1-0 win against Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Cup in 1998, with Vladmir Jugovic scoring the winner.
Atlético de Madrid have won their two home UEFA Champions League matches this season, last winning all three home games in a Champions League group stage in 2018-19.
Lazio have won just two of their last 18 away matches in the UEFA Champions League (D5 L11), though one was at Celtic this season. They haven’t won two away games in a season since 2000-01, when they beat both Shakhtar Donetsk and Sparta Prague in the first group stage under Sven-Göran Eriksson.
Atlético de Madrid will be looking to finish top of their group in a UEFA Champions League campaign for the first time since 2016-17, having gone through as runners-up in each of the previous four seasons in which they’ve qualified (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22).
Atlético de Madrid have scored 15 goals in five games in the UEFA Champions League this season, the joint-most of any side in the first five matchdays. Indeed, their average of three goals per game is currently their highest in a single European Cup/UEFA Champions League campaign.
Lazio have only finished top of their UEFA Champions League group on one previous occasion, doing so back in 1999-2000 under Sven-Göran Eriksson (top in both the first and second group stages).
Álvaro Morata has scored two goals in each of his two home UEFA Champions League appearances this season, only the second Atlético player to score 2+ goals in consecutive home games in major European competition, along with Jorge Mendonça in the 1965-66 Cup Winners’ Cup. No player in Champions League history has scored 2+ goals in all three home group stage games in a single season.
Ciro Immobile has netted eight goals in 10 games for Lazio in the UEFA Champions League, with only Simone Inzaghi (15 in 31 games) netting more for the club in the European Cup/Champions League combined.
Álvaro Morata has been directly involved in six goals in five games for Atlético de Madrid in the UEFA Champions League this season (five goals, one assist) – if he scores or assists in this game, he will already equal his best ever campaign in the competition for goal involvements (seven in 2020-21for Juventus – six goals, one assist).
