Another standard quote from players when signing for a new club "I'm delighted to get it over the line. There were lots of other clubs interested but when (insert club here) showed interest it was a no brainer." Where on earth did 'over the line' come from?

Sterling and ZiyechImage source, Getty Images

I'm glad you asked. The five aforementioned names were just marquee free agents available on the market. There are other free agents, and then there are those who are not necessarily free agents but frozen out by their respective clubs. Let's have a look below:

    • Raheem Sterling: Chelsea's highest earner on a reported £325,000-a-week remained unsold in the summer transfer window. Sterling spent last season on loan at Arsenal but struggled to make an impact with Mikel Arteta's side. He is known to have had interest from Fulham and Bayer Leverkusen, but neither club formalised their interest.
    • Michail Antonio: West Ham chose to not renew Antonio’s contract this summer while he continues his recovery from serious injuries sustained in a near-fatal car crash in December 2024. The 35-year-old striker made a quicker-than-expected return, featuring for Jamaica in June and scoring twice for West Ham’s Under-21s in July. He is currently without a club and has been doing some broadcast work for TNT Sports.
    • Hakim Ziyech: Former Chelsea and Galatasaray winger Hakim Ziyech is without a club after a mutual decision to end his short four-month spell at Al-Duhail in May. Now 32, injuries have restricted his impact in recent seasons, and his time at the top level appears to be winding down.
    • Takehiro Tomiyasu: Tomiyasu’s injury-hit stint at Arsenal ended this summer after the Japan international and the club mutually agreed to terminate his contract a year early. He managed just six minutes of football in 2024-25 due to successive knee injuries. The 26-year-old full-back still faces up to three months on the sidelines as he recovers from February surgery, making it unlikely any club will take a chance on signing him before the January transfer window at the earliest.
  8. Dynamic left-back available as a free agentpublished at 14:26 BST 2 September

    Sergio ReguilonImage source, Getty Images

At one point in time, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur battled for the signature of Sergio Reguilon. Now a free agent, the dynamic left-back is capable of contributing both defensively and offensively. His pace, crossing ability, and Premier League experience make him an attractive option for clubs needing strength on the flank.

    • Age: 28
    • Position: Left-Back
    • Nationality: Spain
    • Recent Clubs: Tottenham Hotspur

I know Bournemouth have had to sell their best players (apart from Semenyo) but I hope they still play the football they did last season and are as competitive. Great for the league and Iraola seems to get the best out of his players.

It's still early days Dil, but I think Liverpool, Wolves and Tottenham will already attest to the fact that the Cherries are as strong as ever this season.

Former Chelsea and West Ham defender Kurt Zouma would make a decent defensive reinforcement for clubs needing one.

The towering French international is a strong and reliable defender, known for aerial dominance and defensive solidity.

His experience in the Premier League and international football makes him a dependable option, whilst also bringing a winning mentality.

The summer transfer window may have closed for the Premier League, but it remains open in the Women's Super League (WSL) until 23:00 BST on Thursday, 4 September.

That means WSL clubs can continue to trade players up until a day before the start of the new season, which kicks off on Friday (5 Spetember) when defending champions Chelsea host Manchester City (19:00 BST).

Arsenal have made the biggest signing of the WSL window so far after completing a £1m move for Canada forward Olivia Smith from Liverpool for what was a world record transfer at the time.
