For all the dislike going Parish and Palace’s way over Guehi, we can’t forget that Liverpool only went close to the asking price on deadline day. If they’d met the asking price (only £40m for one of England's best CB) in June, Guehi would be a Liverpool player now.

    Sami Mokbel
BBC Sport Senior football correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live

When you are kind of divisive and you do take that different approach [like Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa], it does leave a taste in people's mouths, but equally, this window has proven it got the job done.

Marc Guehi is not the type to do that. If he had kicked off and taken a different approach would he be at Liverpool now?

Possibly, but people are different. Guehi isn't the type to agitate like Isak and Wissa have done.

Guehi just moved himself right up the list as future England captain. It won't feel like it today but in the long run his career will be all the better for the way he conducted himself.

    George

Guehi has won the respect of football fans across the country. Isak and Wissa have achieved the opposite.

    John

Liverpool fan here, sad to miss out on Guehi, but I have to admire how he has acted. I'm also glad that Glasner's wishes were respected, hopefully the two of them can lead Palace to another strong season.

  5. 'Do Isak and Guehi's different approach to moving set a precedent?'published at 09:44 British Summer Time

    Rory Smith
Football Correspondent for The Observer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Does it set a bit of a precedent that Alexander Isak behaved not brilliantly and got his move?

That Yoane Wissa behaves not brilliantly, gets a move.

Marc Guehi was really nice and hasn't got his move. It's not great, is it?

I found yesterday draining just trying to keep up with it all from afar but imagine actually being one of the big names involved in it all?

A penny for Marc Guehi's thoughts...

Here's a brief look at how his day unfolded:

    • 15:17 - Liverpool agree a deal with Crystal Palace to sign the centre-back on a long-term contact
    • 16:35 - The England defender completes his Liverpool medical in London
    • 16:38 - Palace's move for Brighton defender Igor Julio collapses with West Ham nipping in for his signature
    • 17:02 - It is believed that Guehi's move to the Reds is still good to go despite this
    • 17:48 - First reports start arriving suggesting the transfer is in jeopardy unless Palace are able to find another centre-back in the remaining time
    • 19:09 - Liverpool submit a deal sheet for Guehi in a bid to try and salvage the transfer in the dying hours
    • 19:55 - Deal collapses and the 25-year-old remains a Palace player

Right, back to the story of Alexander Isak, Yoane Wissa and Marc Guehi - and what their behaviour says about player power and the world of football transfers.

Remember, Isak and Wissa were left out of their respective squads at Newcastle and Brentford while their moves to Liverpool and Newcastle were settled.

Guehi, meanwhile, played on for Crystal Palace as his own £35m move to Anfield was thrashed out, only for it to fall through at the 11th hour, seemingly because the Eagles were unable to find a replacement.

Here's a timeline of the Guehi deal to bring you up to speed...

We will come to Marc Guehi's part in this transfer deadline day saga in a moment, and publish a cross-section of your opinions on his actions, compared to those of Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa.

But first, we have the confirmation of another completed transfer out of Manchester City...

  11. 'No prizes for guessing how players will act in the future'published at 09:26 British Summer Time

Michael Owen has had his say on the behaviour of Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa, when compared with the actions of Marc Guehi.

The former Liverpool and Newcastle United forward wrote on X: "Hmmm. Behave badly and get the move you want. Behave like a gentleman and miss out on the opportunity of a lifetime. No prizes for guessing how players will act in the future if this is the result."

  12. 'I've got dreams' - Wissapublished at 09:24 British Summer Time

It was perhaps an understandable reaction from Newcastle, but not long after releasing their curt statement on Alexander Isak's departure, the Magpies announced the arrival of Yoane Wissa.

The DR Congo forward completed a £55m signing the day after publishing a remarkable statement on his own Instagram account urging the Bees to let him leave.

Wissa said, after joining Newcastle from Brentford: "I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

"I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith, and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started."

  13. Newcastle's Isak statement - short and not so sweetpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time

It feels like there have been quite a few statements shared between Newcastle United and Alexander Isak throughout the summer transfer window.

The one from the Magpies confirming the departure of their top scorer certainly wins the prize for shortest and most blunt, mind.

    Just the 37 words.

It read: "Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.

"The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions."

No mention of Isak's 62 goals for the club or his Carabao Cup final strike to help beat new paymasters Liverpool.

The question is, can you blame them?

Players are happy to sign contracts for tens of thousands of pounds a week, but the contract has to mean something.

    Contracts have to mean something.

Player power has got too much. All they have to do is refuse to play and get their move, it's Sunday league behaviour. Fair play to Guehi, Eze etc who carried on playing. Would love to see players rot in the reserves for a season on no pay for refusing.

Players sign contracts, people in their everyday lives sign contracts and you adhere to those contracts.

It is absolutely despicable what they [Alexander Isak and Yoane Wissa] have done. They may well be happy tonight, but it is a disgraceful way to behave.

Eddie Howe with Isak and his career - Isak owes Howe a hell of a lot, but he has treated him with total disrespect.

Saying that, Newcastle have signed Wissa who has done the same as what Isak has done.

As much as losing Isak is not ideal, I can only feel a little relieved he has gone after the way he conducted himself. £125 million is great for us. However, Wissa was no better. I’m happy we signed him but not under the circumstances. Bittersweet ending to the window.

  20. 'When it doesn't suit club, contract means nothing'published at 08:57 British Summer Time

    Joe Hart
Former England and Man City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live Monday Night Club

I know it is not nice how Alexander Isak has conducted himself, but trust me if Newcastle wanted it to go the other way they would have stomped all over him. I have seen it so many times in football.

If football was fair then he acted unacceptably. If everyone honoured their contracts, football clubs included, this is how we are going to do it, equal opportunity, play while you continue to get paid and then shake hands, great.

But everyone knows it doesn't work like that. We have all been stomped on when it suited someone else. What's wrong with Alexander Isak standing up and saying, "I want to go to Liverpool"?

You can say that you want the contract to mean something but it doesn't, because he's gone to Liverpool. I'm sure Isak doesn't care what any of us think right now.

When it doesn't suit the club the contract means nothing. Go and sit in that dressing room, don't train when we come in, all of those things happen. So why when it's the other way around do we need to respect the contract?
