G, the Toffee - surely the worst Real Madrid teams ever are the many that didn't become European champions? They've had better sides, sure, but they still have 3 of the best players in the world in Mbappe, Vinicius J and Bellingham.

So, are Arsenal now favourites to win the Champions League? They are, at least according to the Opta supercomputer.

It could be the end of a long and frustrating wait for the Gunners faithful, who have seen their club hold the record of playing the most matches in the European Cup/Champions League without actually winning the competition (208 games).

However, Mikel Arteta's side now have a 96% probability of progressing to the semi-finals and win the Champions League in 28.4% of simulations by the supercomputer.

Real Madrid, who were one of the favourites before Tuesday's first leg, now only have a 1.1% chance of winning the tournament.

Barcelona are second in Opta's predictions with a 22.4% chance of lifting the title in Munich come 31 May while Inter Milan, who edged Bayern Munich 2-1 in the away first leg, are 21.1% favourites.

    Opta's Champions League winner predictions:

    1. Arsenal - 28.4%
    2. Barcelona 22.4%
    3. Inter Milan 21.1%
    4. PSG 18.8%
    5. Bayern Munich 3.7%
    6. Aston Villa 3.2%
    7. Borussia Dortmund 1.3%
    8. Real Madrid 1.1%
  4. 'What are the odds?' - Arteta on Rice free-kick doublepublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 9 April

    Arsenal 3-0 Real Madrid

    Declan RiceImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said that Declan Rice's free-kick double - his first goals direct from a free-kick in his career and Arsenal's first since September 2021 - summed up the Gunners' night.

"This night is all about one or two factors, one of which is the atmosphere that we created - 15 minutes before kick off already, something I haven't seen before. Playing with that energy, that commitment with your crowd makes a huge difference.

"And then magic moments - individual moments decide football matches and the first two goals from Declan I think sums up the night.

"We haven't scored a direct free-kick since September 2021 - Burnley away, Martin Odegaard. So it's been a long time.

"To score two goals in 12 minutes of that magnitude, of that quality, from the same player - a player that has never scored a free-kick before in his career - what are the odds? But he's done it tonight.

"I'm a big believer that the crowd played something [in that] with the energy they put in. And it helped us massively to win the game."

Though everyone in the Arsenal squad contributed, Declan Rice was undoubtedly the star of the night.

He is just the fourth Arsenal player to score from a direct free-kick in the Champions League.

Only Alberto Mendez, who was on target against Panathinaikos in his only Champions League appearance, Thierry Henry, who netted thrice during his stay in Highbury, and Bukayo Saka have previously scored free-kick goals for the Gunners in the competition.

Moreover, Rice's first goal was the first free-kick goal scored by Arsenal in a Champions League knockout stage game.

I don't even know how to put it into words, it's just been an unbelievable night. I cam here hoping Arsenal would take something to Madrid, but I was quite content with a 0-0 draw, if I'm honest.

The atmosphere in here was just incredible. I've been coming here since the day this stadium opened and I don't think I have never experienced anything quite like it.

The place erupted when the ball hit the back of the net on those three occasions and again at the final whistle.

It's just been an unbelievable night and exactly what Arsenal needed because the season has been a bit of a disappointment in terms of the league form.

There has been so many conversations around Arsenal but to see them turn up with a patch-up defence and a makeshift centre-forward and blow away the European champions is just incredible.

I thought Thomas Partey was outstanding. I think he allowed the midfield to go and do their thing. He read the game, he shored it up at the back. He kind of did a little bit of everything.

I flew home yesterday for the game last night. Best atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at the Emirates. What a win, what a performance. Am now spending my morning editing my Spanish students’ English presentations asking questions such as “would you rather: a Sunday afternoon eating Rice or a Saturday night out Parteying?”. The glory hunters need to learn their lesson!

Arsenal’s back line gave Rodrygo and Vinicius virtually nothing and contained Mbappe very well last night. Massive props to Kiwior, who was unbelievable in the second half after a couple of errors in the first. And Raya… outstanding.

    Jakub Kiwior pass map

Jakub Kiwior made just his 11th start in all competitions this season after being drafted in for the injured Gabriel Magalhaes.

The 25-year-old Poland centre-back may have expected a difficult night, coming up against a formidable Real Madrid line-up that included the combined attacking talents of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham.

Yet he emerged with a clean sheet and personal stats that would indicate a relatively quiet night:

    • Tackles made: 1
    • Tackles won: 0
    • Interceptions: 1
    • Fouls committed: 1
    • Total duels: 2
    • Duels won: 1
    • Aerial duels: 0
    • Possession won: 4
    • Possession lost: 5
    • Touches: 64
    • Total passes: 61
    • Accurate passes: 57
    • Passing accuracy: 94.7%

If I was the manager I would probably have played one of Ben White or Jurrien Timber in there with William Saliba [at centre-back]. That's why I am not the manager, Mikel Arteta knows way better than me.

I thought he had a couple of moments in the first half where he gave the ball away and looked a little bit shaky, but like everybody else he seemed to grow in confidence.

If he was low on confidence - which I don't think he is, I think he is a confident lad - then keeping a clean sheet against Kylian Mbappe, Vini Jr, Rodrygo and Bellingham will have done him the world of good.

Rice's second one was better, purely for the "and again!" factor. It had me whooping and I don't like Arsenal.

    Liverpool v Barcelona - 2018-19 Semi-finals

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool overturned a 3-0 first-leg deficit to beat Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate and reach a second consecutive final in 2019.

The Reds are famous for their European fightbacks before, notably when they won this competition for the fifth time in Istanbul in 2005, and this one added to that glittering history.

Divock Origi started the unlikely comeback after seven minutes before substitute Georginio Wijnaldum scored twice in the space of 122 seconds to level the tie.

Origi then struck winner after Trent Alexander-Arnold caught the Barca defence napping from a corner.

The Reds would beat Tottenham 2-0 to win their sixth European title, as Mohamed Salah and Origi netted in the all-English showdown in Madrid.

Barcelona were on the receiving end a year later as Roma emerged triumphant to make it to the final four, becoming only the third team in Champions League history to overturn a first-leg defeat of three goals or more.

The La Liga side were heavy favourites to progress after a 4-1 first-leg win, but they fell apart in Rome as defender Kostas Manolas headed home the winner with eight minutes remaining.

Edin Dzeko and Daniele De Rossi were on target to send Roma on their way before Manolas' finishing touch.

    Barcelona v Paris St-Germain - 2016-17 Round of 16

Barcelona became the first team to overturn a first-leg 4-0 deficit as they knocked out Paris St-Germain to reach the quarter-finals during the 2016-17 season.

The Spanish champions were 5-3 down on aggregate with two minutes left to play, but scored three goals in the final seven minutes in one of the greatest European ties of all time.

Neymar's free-kick and penalty followed by Sergi Roberto's 95th-minute winner sealed an incredible win at the Nou Camp.

    How Barcelona made history:

    • 3': Luis Suarez goal, Barcelona 1-0 PSG (1-4)
    • 40': Layvin Kurzawa own goal, Barcelona 2-0 PSG (2-4)
    • 50': Lionel Messi penalty, Barcelona 3-0 PSG (3-4)

    Deportivo La Coruna v AC Milan - 2003-04 Quarter-finals

A Kaka double had condemned Deportivo La Coruna to a 4-1 defeat at the San Siro in the Champions League quarter-final first leg in 2004, but the Spanish side stunned defending champions AC Milan with a 4-0 win at the Riazor in the return fixture to the reach the semi-finals.

Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valeron, Albert Luque and Fran wrote their names into the history books, bagging the goals in Coruna to cap off an improbable revival.

The comeback against a team also featuring the likes of Paolo Maldini, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Cafu remains one of the finest the competition has ever witnessed.

  20. Champions League's greatest comebacks: Remember these?published at 11:58 British Summer Time 9 April

    Arsenal 3-0 Real Madrid

Real Madrid have their work cut out in overturning the 3-0 deficit when they face Arsenal in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu a week from now.

Only four teams have done so in the history of the Champions League after losing the first leg by three goals or more - that is four out of 47 instances (8.5%).

Real's La Liga rivals Barcelona have been involved in three of those four games but were on the positive side of the result only once.

Let's take a look at all four of those brilliant fightbacks now...
