Some may say playing Declan Rice, is that a big risk, because of what he brings.

Arteta could say 'he's had a suspension' so he'll probably say 'well, OK, he's had that rest so I'll put him in', get the minutes.

You might only see 45 minutes for a few of them like Saka, it's a big opportunity for Raheem Sterling.

    There's a nice blend there.

I just think it could be a tough night for West Ham at this moment in time because I'm not sure what is the direction?

They have some wonderful, talented players but to adapt in such a way very quickly, it hasn't seemed to happen.

I'm a big admirer of his [Federico Chiesa] to be honest. I've really liked him as a player for quite some years. I love how direct he is, I think he's very physical for an attacking wide player, he carries a real presence and purpose.

It might not be the most kind of technically gifted that you'll ever see or that jinky wide player but he's so forceful, makes very direct runs, outside to in, looks to get in behind.

When he's on pomp and he's fit, he's shown and we've seen him certainly internationally, when he plays for Italy in big tournaments and over the years, he's a really exciting player and what a great signing.

The Chelsea defeat wasn't a great game. It's more that everyone is expecting this big change, it's going to be great football and it's going to be this and that, and it just wasn't. It was a worrying game.

They have had a fantastic transfer window, it just needs time to get everyone firing now.

Julen Lopetegui is definitely going to have the backing of the team because a lot of them are new and some of them have not been there that long. He's got exceptional players in there, it's just about trying to get everyone playing in the correct position and the correct style.

He's already said he's got Todibo and Soler - that it's going to take time for them to settle in, which isn't great because they are big players who need to come in and make this team better.

  12. Lopetegui faces big night at Liverpoolpublished at 19:37 British Summer Time 25 September

Liverpool v West Ham (20:00 BST)

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Julen Lopetegui has made an inauspicious start at West Ham United since succeeding David Moyes and now faces an important clash with Liverpool.

The Carabao Cup third round may not rank highest on Lopetegui's list of priorities but a win at Anfield would ease some early nerves starting to swirl around east London.

Moyes' time at West Ham had come to a natural conclusion despite the Scot's fine work, which delivered long-awaited success in the Europa Conference League in 2023.

Lopetegui already has the unwanted distinction of being the first head coach in West Ham's history to suffer three straight losses at home at the start of the season.

West Ham were jeered off by supporters after they were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Chelsea on Saturday and they were only rescued by Danny Ings' equaliser after being largely outplayed at Fulham in their previous game.

And supporters hoping that Moyes' pragmatic style that frustrated some would be replaced by a thrill ride under Lopetegui have so far been disappointed - although they should not be surprised because that has never been the Spaniard's style.

Of course, it is very early to make any long-term prognosis on West Ham and Lopetegui will be given time but a win at Liverpool, traditionally such a tough assignment, would lead to an instant and significant change of mood.

West Ham spent big, around £120m, to support Lopetegui in the summer but signings are still settling in. French defender Jean-Clair Todibo may start at Anfield but striker Niclas Fullkrug has been missing after being injured on international duty with Germany.

The club showed their ambition in the markets, which almost inevitably reduces patience among supporters if good results do not come, but an advance into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup will carry the air of a statement from Lopetegui, a signal that he has the job in hand.

The competition may not mean quite as much as others to the Premier League's big hitters but it could play a vital role in kick-starting Lopetegui's reign and West Ham's season.

Liverpool boss Slot says Trent Alexander Arnold has 'been a good defender all his life'

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has been discussing the capabilities of defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in his pre-match news conference after the 25-year-old recently talked about the criticism he receives for his defending.

"The only thing I know is we are talking about a player who has won the Champions League and a league title,” Slot said. "It's clear to me he's been a good defender all his life. It's not about if he's capable of doing things. It's more about his concentration rate."

Meanwhile, the Monday Night Club's Mark Chapman, Rory Smith, Chris Sutton and Andros Townsend discussed the right-back's contract situation. His deal ends in the summer.

  14. 'Onus is on players to seize day'published at 19:33 British Summer Time 25 September

Liverpool v West Ham (20:00 BST)

Liverpool's record in the League Cup is incredible. They’ve won the trophy on 10 occasions and their magic moments in days gone by have been plentiful. Not many though, can match the events at Wembley Stadium in the final week of February this year.

'Klopp’s Kids' managed to come up with the goods against all odds to win the first silverware of the season against a Chelsea side who looked like they had the game for the taking.

Arne Slot has gone about his business so far in a calm and assured manner and what we’ve seen of Liverpool in the early weeks of the new campaign is a direct reflection of that.

There’s much more emphasis on defensive solidity and maintaining possession, but a style of play that is sometimes characterised by a more methodical approach to build-up play, can be altered in a flash.

Tonight’s game is also the first opportunity for the Reds manager to see a fair number of his players in competitive action with a Liver bird on their chest. Knocking on the head coach's door will only get you so far when you play for a team with the quality and depth that Liverpool have in their squad these days. So the onus is on the players to seize the day and show what they can bring to the team individually, but more importantly as part of the collective.

    Michael Brown
Former Manchester City and Tottenham midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

How much pressure is on Lopetegui and West Ham? It's inevitable isn't it?

The fans demanded there was a change, they want to see a different style. David Moyes took them as far as he could, then you spend a bit of money, you move things around and I'm not sure the style of play is really as attractive as what you wanted at this moment of time.

The results are not [attractive], the pressure's increased. He can't afford to come here, change the team so much and not give everything tonight.

Bolton Wanderers defender Chris Forino faces the team he supports today.

The 24-year-old Londoner, a St Lucia international, joined Bolton from Wycombe in the summer.

"Gabriel and William Saliba have transformed the club," Forino told BBC Radio Manchester, talking about Arsenal's first-choice centre-backs,

"Attacks win games but defence wins you leagues. Hopefully they can do it in the league, but not on Wednesday.

The Premier League is a different style of football to League One.

"But I remember looking at Saliba's first season a couple of years ago, his breakthrough season, and thinking he's the pinnacle of what defenders want to be nowadays."

  18. Bolton's slow startpublished at 19:24 British Summer Time 25 September

    Arsenal v Bolton (19:45 BST)

Bolton come into the game on the back of only their second League One win of the season, a 5-2 home win over Reading.

The Trotters have had a slow start to the season after losing last season's play-off final to Oxford and sit 19th after six games.

"It's something we can all enjoy off the back of a good performance on Saturday," said boss Ian Evatt.

"We can go there with the pressure off and just know this is as tough as it gets and go there humble enough to know that there is zero expectation and no-one thinks we've got a cat in hell’s chance."

Jack Porter becomes the youngest player to ever start a first-team game for Arsenal.

The England Under-17 goalkeeper is 16 years and 72 days old.

The previous record holder was Cesc Fabregas - who was 16 years and 177 days when he played against Rotherham in this competition in October 2023.

Porter is their second youngest player after Ethan Nwaneri, who was 15 years and 181 days, when he made his debut in September 2022.

  20. Odegaard 'feeling more positive every day'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 25 September

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard says he is making progress with his recovery from an ankle ligament injury, although he does not yet know a date for his return.

The midfielder was writing in his captain's notes column in the club's match programme, external for tonight's game.

"It was a bad twist to my ankle, and I damaged some ligaments there, but it’s part of football and now I’m just trying to recover as quickly as I can," he wrote.

"I’m moving forward, making progress and I’m feeling more positive every day. I’m working hard and my only thought is to get back as soon as possible."

The Norwegian has missed Arsenal's past three games - a win in the north London derby, followed by successive draws away to Atalanta in the Champions League and against Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

While the midfielder remains sidelined, he did share his relief that the injury was not as serious as first feared.

"I’ve injured my ankle before and the pain felt a bit different this time. That’s what scared me, but from what happened it could have been worse, so in that sense I got away with it a bit," he said.
