Simon Murray's 88th-minute goal earned Dundee a draw at Easter Road

Simon Murray grabbed a late equaliser for Dundee at Easter Road to deny his old club Hibernian a first Scottish Premiership win of the season.

Dundee had initially started the brighter and threatened to inflict a third straight defeat on Hibs when Scott Tiffoney stroked in the opener inside 10 minutes.

Then Lyall Cameron thought he had added a second, only for his deflected goal to be ruled out because Seb Palmer-Houlden was offside in the build up.

But Hibs, who were outplayed for most of the first half at an increasingly frustrated Easter Road, managed to get level before the break through Martin Boyle's sweetly-struck free kick.

And after manager David Gray threw on substitutes in search of a winner Kieron Bowie rewarded his manager by swivelling in the box and finishing smartly to give Hibs a significant lead.

However, in line with a long-running theme a defensive lapse cost Hibs a first win in the league.

Warren O'Hora switched off and allowed Murray in behind him, and the in-form Dundee striker slotted through Josef Bursik's legs to grab a sixth goal of the season and a draw for his team.

Same old issues dog Hibs

This already felt like a significant game for Hibs’ rookie head coach Gray, after a thumping 3-0 defeat by St Mirren was backed up by league and cup losses to Celtic.

The latter two games were a free hit, but fans expect more from a home game against a perceived smaller club.

Hibs will not achieve what they want if they keep making defensive errors, which has been a theme for at least three seasons.

Jordan Obita’s horrible clearance and then a missed challenge from Nicky Cadden made it easy for Cameron and Tiffoney to work the opening goal.

Then O'Hora appeared to be unaware of Murray's presence for the Dundee equaliser. There were other moments where they looked shaky, too, and the struggling defensive unit was not helped by a sluggish midfield.

On the bright side, Boyle grabbed a much-needed goal for his confidence and Bowie, 21, looks like he will make a big contribution when up to full speed.

But it already feels like Gray's tenure will be defined by sorting out his team's defending and making some late signings in midfield.

Daring Dundee fight back

Dundee have already grabbed 31 goals in eight competitive games this season, and yet again they looked vibrant at Easter Road.

Cameron continues to grow in stature and buzzed about the midfield along with Luke McCowan, while Tiffoney's pace and Murray's all-round brilliance makes them a threat for anyone.

After finishing sixth on their top-flight return last season Tony Docherty will aim to build on that, but defensively they have work to do.

Centre-back Billy Koumetio, who at 21 has not played many senior games, was brought in to start but was rash in giving away the free kick which lead to Boyle's equaliser, and he was too easily fended off by Bowie for Hibs' second goal.

If Docherty can keep hold of his best players before Friday's deadline and build more robustness in their own box, it could be a memorable season.

Hibs head coach David Gray: "We came out second half in a much better frame of mind and we were on the front foot and dominating the game.

"It is a new back four. We need to be critical of ourselves to make sure we're doing everything we can. We need to find the answers to these as quickly as possible."

Dundee manager Tony Docherty: "I've got to be proud of my team, to be 2-1 down in the 87th minute, to dig out an equaliser. I thought we were going to go on and win it at the end."
