  6. 'To win 4-0 on your first game is incredible'published at 14:51 BST 7 September

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Marc Skinner, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was more we said thank you and it's the anniversary of Nick Toone's passing so we celebrated him today because Toone scored as well. She has a really massive impact on the game so really great for them. We got up and started like I asked. To win 4-0 on your first game is incredible.

"Reality is the chances we created, you can have shots on target but it's the quality of chance. She [Ella Toone] could have had a hat trick today but that is Tooney, she's such a perfectionist. That fluidity will come. I'm pleased but I'm not the manager of Manchester United if I'm pleased we've only scored four today.

On Jess Park: "She's come from a really structured team and I know they'll be different this year but she wanted to be free and play football like the kid who grew love in the game. I'm probably the perfect manager to be able to do that because we give structure and fluidity. I just want her to shoot when she's in the position.

"Another clean sheet today so that's three competitive games and three clean sheets. We're ruthless in the top end and our end. There's more to come.

On Champions League game midweek: "It'll be a different test because we have to travel and then come back. Our players are ready for the challenge of it and we want to play in Europe. We want to try set ourselves up for a nice second leg.

On squad depth: "We've added and also added 30 trophies with the players that have come in. I think we have to do work in the winter window and I need to bring fresh faces in. This short three months now and we've got unbelievable quality. I understand but we are in the plans to bring in and I want to do that in the winter window."

  7. 'It feels like she has been here a lot longer than two sessions'published at 14:47 BST 7 September

    FT: Man Utd 4-0 Leicester

    Manchester United

Manchester United Ella Toone speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Jess Park's debut: "She has fit in really well. It feels like she has been here a lot longer than two sessions, that's for sure. I know what she is like, I've played with her a lot for England, she is good with the ball at her feet. She can play wide but she can also come inside and create things and pick up pockets.

"She is someone you want on the ball. That will be really good for us, we want to keep the ball a lot and play exciting football and she can help us to do that."

On the aims for the season: "As a United player you want to win trophies. We don't go into any game looking for a draw, we want to win. it was a good marker to put down today and we will continue to do that and hopefully get three points every game that we play."

Manchester United Ella Toone speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after her player of the match display: "We wanted to make a statement today, show what we are about, and we did really well. We controlled the game, controlled the ball and created a lot of chances, and on another day we would probably put another four or five away. We should be really proud of ourselves and our performance.

"I had about four chances myself that is should have put away, but that is the standards that we have for ourselves. It's really good that we are in the position to make these chances but it is about putting them to bed and finishing the game early. Goals could count at the end of the season.

"I had a good two weeks off to really recover from a mad summer, mentally and physically, and I feel in a really good place. The games come thick and fast, especially here because we have Champions League and those midweek games, so we have to recover quickly and be ready for the next game."

Sacked the manager in February and didn't appoint a replacement until a month before the season starts. Had all summer to replace the best player but didn't sign a striker until deadline day. I genuinely fear for Liverpool this season - does the club hierarchy care about the women's team?

Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor speaking to Sky Sports: "Obviously, the result is not what we wanted. It was a fantastic start for us, I felt like we got a grip of the game, got control of the game to a high level. The supporters were really great at that moment. We should've maximised a little bit more, hit the post two or three times at 1-0, also at 1-1 and I think it was four or five minutes either side of the half that was our undoing, and I think there's circumstances around that.

"Messaging to the players has been really positive but we have to stick to our brief and our process that we work to and we came off the gas a little bit in that four minute period either side of half-time.

"There's work to do for sure but I think it's exciting. It's a wonderful football club. There's fantastic people here. We're aware of the job we've taken on and where it sits and I think that's really exciting."

  14. 'We took over and capitalised on it'published at 14:31 BST 7 September

    FT: Liverpool 1-4 Everton

    Everton

Everton boss Brian Sorensen speaking to Sky Sports: "I thought we were terrible the first 30 almost 40 minutes. I don't know why. We were late in our pressure. Everything was just off I don't know why. We couldn't put more than three or four passes together. Then in the final ten minutes or so we started to look more like ourselves.

"Then we made the three subs [at half time] not because of the three that came out but more just we diddn't want to start on the back foot again and wanted some fresh energy in, and it paid off. I'm so happy for the girls.

"It's so hard to start the first game of the season and know where you are straight away. I thought Liverpool were excellent at the start and then we really took over and capitalised on it."

On the side returning to Goodison Park next week: "I can't wait. The next two home games we have are at Goodison Park, we need to be better from the start of course, but I can't wait.

  15. 'She has everything'published at 14:29 BST 7 September

    Everton

Everton defender Martina Fernandez speaking to Sky Sports on Ornella Vignola's performance: "She's unbelievable. Good with the ball, fast, strong, a really good defender as well. She has everything.

"I think we have a really good team. We had a lot of players in the summer, I'm one of them as well. We have a very good team, on and off the pitch, so I think good things are coming."

Tottenham failed to win any of their last 10 WSL games in 2024-25 (D3, L7), but they've beaten that sorry streak today with that 1-0 victory over their London rivals.

Everton goalscorer Katja Snoeijs: "Amazing. Another derby win. A great start to the season for us.

"Hopefully, we can build on the good performance we had today and get the season even more started."

On Ornella Vignola's hat-trick performance: "Ornella has been amazing, she was really good in pre-season. I'm really happy she got the goals in the first game of the season, it takes a lot of pressure off her shoulders.

"She's a great player and you can expect more goals from her as well."
