Match Facts

  • This is the first ever meeting between Girona and Slovan Bratislava. The Slovakian side are winless in their last six major European games against Spanish sides (D2 L4) since beating Barcelona 2-1 in the 1969 Cup Winners’ Cup final to lift their only major European prize to date.

  • The last encounter between a Spanish team and Slovakian team in major European competition was in the 2011-12 UEFA Europa League group stage, when Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Club won both games against Slovan Bratislava 2-1 on their way to reaching that season’s final.

  • Girona have lost both of their games in the UEFA Champions League this season, and could become the first Spanish side to suffer defeats in each of their first three matches in the competition.

  • Slovan Bratislava have lost each of their last five matches in major European competition, conceding 16 goals and only scoring three times in return in this run. Indeed, since winning their opening two games in the UEFA Conference League last term, they’ve only won one of their last eight (D1 L6).

  • Girona have scored three own goals in two games in the UEFA Champions League this season, which is already the joint-most ever by a team in a single campaign (also three by Fenerbahçe in 2007-08).

  • Only Sparta Prague (26.3%) have a lower possession average than Slovan Bratislava (31.4%) in the UEFA Champions League this season. Furthermore, the Slovakian side have the lowest PPDA average in the competition this term, allowing 22 opposition passes per defensive action.

  • Slovan Bratislava have faced 33 more shots than they’ve attempted in the UEFA Champions League this season (11 for, 44 against); the worst shot difference of any team. Indeed, they also have the worst expected goal difference of any side (-6.9, 0.6 for and 7.5 against).

  • Along with scoring the opener for Girona on the night, David López recovered possession 12 times against Feyenoord last time out – the most by a defender in a UEFA Champions League game this season.

  • Slovan Bratislava’s only goal in the UEFA Champions League to date was scored by their Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer (v Celtic on MD1 this season). Indeed, he’s one of only two players to have landed a shot on target for them in the competition this term, along with Juraj Kucka (one each).

  • Ladislav Krejcí has made 29 line-breaking passes in the UEFA Champions League this season, 11 more than the Girona player with the next-most (David López, 18). In fact, only Nico Schlotterbeck (27) has made more in the defensive half than Krejcí (24) so this term.
