Benfica move on to four points from two games in Group C
Benfica beat Auckland City in a Fifa Club World Cup game that was delayed for over two hours because of thunderstorms.
The New Zealand amateurs looked more organised from the start from the team who lost 10-0 to Bayern Munich in their opening game.
Benfica did not take the lead in Orlando until first-half injury time with Angel di Maria scoring a penalty.
The half-time break took about two and a half hours because of thunder and heavy rain.
Vangelis Pavlidis scored eight minutes into the second half after some good play in the box.
As Auckland visibly tired, Benfica scored four more goals, starting with Renato Sanches' deflected effort.
Leandro Barreiro scored twice from close range and Di Maria added a second penalty.
What were the main talking points?
Auckland City, who qualified as the best Oceania team, conceded double figures in their first game – a fact that caused major scrutiny and ridicule of the tournament – and many observers wondered if there was going to be another annihilation here.
But with boss Paul Posa back in the dugout, having missed the opener after minor surgery, they put up more of a fight.
They kept Benfica out for 53 minutes and had four chances themselves – but in the end they could not cope with the fitness of their Portuguese opponents.
The weather delay will cause more concern for organisers too, with this the fourth match in the opening week delayed because of storms. The match ended after the Flamengo-Chelsea game which started three hours later.
Which players stood out?
Auckland City made five changes from the side who lost to Bayern with one of them being 20-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Garrow.
Without him maybe this one would have ended up as double figures. He made 10 saves, with several of them impressive stops.
He touched the ball 59 times, more than any of his team-mates – and more than Benfica's two-goal midfielder Barreiro.
The standout stats
Benfica had 32 shots, 16 on target, with Auckland having four attempts, with two requiring saves from Anatolii Trubin.
What's next for these teams?
The final games in Group C take place on Tuesday, 24 June at 20:00 BST.
Auckland City, who are already eliminated, play Boca Juniors and Benfica take on Bayern Munich, probably needing a result to ensure qualification to the last 16.
