That second goal is so important. Unai Emery, his players and the fans in here won't be comfortable until they get that.

I think the boys need a bit of confidence ahead of the weekend. Ollie Watkins, Harvey Elliott and Jadon Sancho are three players who have plenty of quality that they can bring on.

Bologna only conceded five goals from set-pieces last season but Villa leave the space open to come into. McGinn's finish is as clinical as you'll see.

But it has come from Bologna's obsession with man-to-man marking.

The goal has given them a lot of confidence.

I think now Villa have just this lead, they need to forget about the previous game, get back to basics, take the ball up the field as far as they can go, look for your team mate before passing. Also any chances in long range shots, just shoot.

It wasn't a great first half. There were a combined 15 shots (seven to Villa) but the Marmite expected goals stat indicates it should be 0-0.

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bologna

    Nick Mashiter
BBC Sport football news reporter at Villa Park

Despite Villa's lead it still feels a bit flat at Villa Park in the last 10 minutes. The hosts have created decent openings and Bologna's sluggish defence has given them plenty of encouragement but it is not an electric European night.

  19. Postpublished at 41 mins

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bologna

Federico Bernardeschi controls a fine crossfield ball and beats Emiliano Buendia far too easily but he keeps taking an extra touch and an extra touch and another and in the end Nicolo Cambiaghi shoots over.
