  2. Group B permutationspublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 24 June

Albania v Spain and Croatia v Italy will both take place tonight at 20:00 GMT.

So what does each team in the final Group B matches need to do to qualify?

Here we break it down for you.

Spain: The nation have already qualified for the knock-out rounds but if they finish top or second in the group remains to be seen.

If Spain beat Albania they will top the group. If Spain lose they would need Italy to lose draw or have a lesser goal difference if they did win to top the group. If Spain draw they top the group

Italy: If Italy beat Croatia they will qualify for the last 16. If Italy draw and Spain beat Albania or if Spain and Albania draw, Italy qualify.

If Italy lose they would need Spain to beat or draw with Albania to have a chance of progressing as one of the best third-place teams.

Albania: If Albania lose or draw they will not qualify. If Albania beat Spain they will need Italy to lose and to have a better goal difference than Croatia to qualify in the top two spots.

If Albania beat Spain but Italy beat Croatia, they will have to wait to see if they are one of the best third-place teams. If Albania beat Spain but Italy and Croatia the second place spot would be decided on goal difference.

Croatia: If Croatia lose or draw they will not qualify. If they beat Italy they will need Albania to draw or lose to Spain in order to qualify in second place.

If they beat Italy but Albania beat Spain the second and third spots would be decided on goal difference.

  3. Can England qualify before they play Slovenia?published at 16:20 British Summer Time 24 June

It is possible for England to qualify for the last 16 before they play their final group match against Slovenia tomorrow - if Spain avoid defeat against Albania in Group B.

I know what you're thinking, how does a game in a different group secure England's spot in the knock-out stage? Let's break it down.

It is still possible for England to finish third in their group despite currently being top. If Denmark beat Serbia and Slovenia defeat England, Gareth Southgate's side will finish third in the group.

In this Euros four best third-placed teams will progress to the knock-out stage.

Group A's third-place nation is Hungary who have three points with no more games to play.

Group B is currently Albania who have one point with one game to play. Group D is Austria with three and one game to play, Group E is Slovakia with three and one game to play and Group F is the Czech Republic with one point and one game to play.

England, in Group C, currently have four points which puts them in a good position. There are many complicated permutations but put simply if Albania fail to beat Spain then England will at least have one of the best third-place spots.

Southgate must know that the majority of fans & media want to see Foden at 10, Bellingham next to Rice as an 8 and then have pace down the left with Gordon. Saka & Kane can remain where they are and eventually Luke Shaw can come back in at left back. That is the ideal starting line-up. As players start to get tired in the second half, you can bring on people like Palmer for Foden, Eze for Gordon, Bowen for Saka, Wharton/Mainoo for Rice/Bellingham and even Trent for Walker or another defender if we change to 3 at the back (so 3-2-4-1). Not to mention Watkins for Kane when he gets too tired to run in behind. How hard is that to do?? You can also bring on Toney in Extra-Time with penalties in mind. Gallagher can come on too depending on the situation if we require more pressure when off the ball.

  6. Southgate 'always encouraged me to bring my attributes to the England squad'published at 16:03 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

John Stones on whether England boss Gareth Southgate allows defenders to play with freedom: "I think so, yeah. I think we play totally different and different styles, but 100% he's always encouraged me to bring my attributes to the England squad, the team, to the training pitch.

"I think it's more of a trust thing that he puts a lot of trust in us as players to make the right choices, do the right things, but he definitely wants, he says it all the time that we're in the room for a reason, because of how we played at club level, or what we bring to the team and that's everyone.

"I'm sure when game day comes in, he's got to pick 11 players to play he is probably very torn and I don't envy him in that aspect, it's a very difficult part of his job to only select 11 to start.

"But on the other hand he trusts us all to know our roles and responsibilities, our own individual flair as well that makes us different from the rest of the other players and he has allowed me to express myself and bring maybe something different to the team."

The issue will not be fixed by just replacing Trent with Gallagher. This is why Southgate needs to go, it needs balance on the left which we will not have.

Gallagher over Trent is a step in the right direction but it really should be Mainoo or Wharton. Foden also needs benching for Gordon - what an impact sub he would be for a tiring Bellingham in the second half!

  8. Guehi 'handled the occasion so well'published at 15:49 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

marc guehi and john stonesImage source, Getty Images

John Stones on Marc Guehi: "So good, so good. For him to come in, not have felt the kind of the feelings around tournament football before or these kind of games, all the kind of different emotions that come with it that you've never experienced before.

"He has handled them so well in his performances, and I said to him 'when we're in this or whoever' we're playing with, I'm your right arm, you're my left, we do this together. I've got your back' and he's bought into that.

"I believe massively in partnerships that you do it all together and so far, I think we've had two games together - obviously conceded in the last one but if we're going to concede in that manner, from a great strike, quite far outside the box, gone right in the corner. Sometimes you can't really do much about.

"It is the worrying ones where you are in a bad position or a mistake or something that you could have done better with. I think we could have done better the other day with the goal, but if it is going to be struck that far out sometimes you have got to hold your hands up and I feel he's handled the occasion so well and I've really enjoyed playing with him."

If reports are true then I do see Gallagher as an upgrade on TAA in midfield….but it fundamentally changes very little. The system will remain the same and we’ll have zero threat down the left again and too much congestion in the middle. Why did he take Anthony Gordon? Gareth has definitely lost the plot.

    John

Gallagher in for Trent is worth a go from the start, I'd like to see Wharton given a chance second half. The real issue is releasing Foden, Gareth needs to focus on that. A natural winger on the left is vital.

  10. Stones enjoys 'being that last line of defence to stop something'published at 15:36 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

John Stones on whether he agrees with Paolo Maldini on “if you have to make the tackle you weren't in the right position in the first place, if a defender can play a game and be seen to be doing nothing, he is doing everything right”: "I can see his thought process with saying that definitely. I agree and disagree with that, very respectfully!

"I think that sometimes now, with how good attackers are, how fluid the game is, that you can have to react and we have to react to maybe mistakes, maybe a slip with people coming through.

"To make tackles or big things like that is part of the game but if your position is right, everything that comes around that is correct and I can see that you could probably make a game look a lot easier than it should be, which I'd love to do that every game!

"But I enjoy the tackles, the blocks, the kind of being that last line of defence to stop something.

"In one of the games, a guy has come through, gone past me. I was probably a yard late. Had a man, but the guys run off someone else, and I had to slide and get a bit of a block on the ball for [Jordan] Pickford to pick it up and I enjoy those kind of, those types of on edge moments."

Gallagher is not a bad swap for a bit more energy in midfield. Main issue is that England haven't got anyone running in behind, would like to see Gordon come in. Anyone suggesting Palmer and Eze should come in need to understand that more players who want the ball to feet is not a tactical solution to our problems.

Changing Trent for Gallagher doesn't change the fundamental problem of having no one on the left! Either move Bellingham next to Rice and play Foden at 10 ,or drop Foden. Either way, Eze or Gordon must start unless we want our team to remain lopsided and ineffective when we're attacking.

    Rob

No problem Gallagher coming in but Trent should be playing at right back, unless for specific games e.g. France.

    Liam

Gallagher starting I think the news of Gallagher potentially starting tomorrow shows that you can’t please everyone. People want Southgate to mix it up, and when he does, people are unhappy. He keeps the same XI, people are unhappy. Gallagher performed well when he replaced Trent and with our place in the knockout stages more or less in the bag, why not put some fresh legs in and change things around? Gallagher coming in is a good start, and would like to see Palmer finally get some playing time.

  13. Wharton's 'calmness is incredible'published at 15:17 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

John Stones on whether Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is influenced by his Man City team-mate Rodri: "Oh, that's difficult. I think I'm concentrating too much on myself and trying to do my best. Now you've said it, I'll have to look out for definitely.

"One thing I can say about Adam is how he does the basics incredibly well, something so underrated in football, uses his feet so well that is something so underrated in football.

"The basics of controlling on the correct foot to use the space well, or little things like that, his ball retention, his calmness is incredible for such a young guy that's come into to a big, big squad on a big occasion it is credit to himself, it really is."

Gallagher cannot be the only player coming into the team. What do Palmer and Gordon have to do to get on the pitch?

    Aly

Southgate himself was a hard working industrious player and I wonder whether that blinkers his selection in picking those with similar traits. We need flair players, those that will create chances. Gallagher is not a bad player but someone like Mainoo or Wharton would be better suited to release our front 4. If the rumours are true, its very difficult not to get frustrated with such a defensive set up.

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

"BBC Sport currently understands that Conor Gallagher is likely to come into the England starting XI for Tuesday's final Group C game against Slovenia (20:00 BST), ahead of other alternative midfield options such as Kobbie Mainoo or Adam Wharton.

"Chelsea's Gallagher has been a second-half substitute in both England's games so far."

We'll bring you more updates as we get them. And stay on the BBC Sport website and app for a live stream of manager Gareth Southgate's news conference from 18:45 BST today.

  17. Alexander-Arnold or Gallagher - what do the stats say?published at 14:53 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

According to Opta, no player created more chances (three) or played more line-breaking passes in the final third (five) for England against Denmark than Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite him being subbed off in the 54th minute.

However, at the end of 2023 (as per Opta) Conor Gallagher was the only player in Europe's big five leagues with 20+ shots, 20+ chances created, 20+ dribbles completed, 20+ touches in the opposition box, 20+ duels won, 20+ tackles and 20+ interceptions.

Will England benefit from the switch?

If what we have heard online is true, and it's just a straight Conor Gallagher for Trent Alexander-Arnold swap, I have lost the last bit of faith I have for this coaching team - not just Gareth Southgate. In my view, we should go with Trent at right-back; Kyle Walker left-back and Jude Bellingham to drop deeper, with Cole Palmer on the left of midfield, Anthony Gordon on the right and Phil Foden in the middle. Done.
