Gary in Romford: “All those players are there on merit. If we haven’t got balls coming across feeding Harry Kane, we’re not going to magic goals out of nothing. He’s had two maybe even three chances in the games he’s played and he’s scored one. If that was Maradona, we’d be going ‘wow, look how great that guy is!’ How can you go and shoot Harry Kane down?”

Nick in Worthing: “It’s got to come down to the way they’re directed on the pitch. I’m livid with the FA and Southgate. I’m 53 years old. I look at the England team and it is the best squad I’ve ever seen. We don’t seem to have the people to put that squad into an effective position. Don’t blame the players. It’s the person who is telling them what to do.”

    Scotland 0-1 Hungary

Despite assurances from Uefa that there was no delay in the treatment of Hungary's Barnabas Varga, captain Dominik Szoboszlai has criticised the organisers' pitchside emergency team for what he described as their slow response, saying "something needs to be done".

The Liverpool midfielder was seen grabbing the stretcher to try to hurry the medics along in his side's victory over Scotland.

Szoboszlai admits that he didn't understand the Uefa protocol, which requires the team doctor and stadium doctor to assess players before calling for emergency assistance.

"I don't understand this kind of protocol, why the medical staff don't rush in at this time?," Szoboszlai told Hungarian reporters.

"This question remains for everyone, so I hope that everyone can save a few seconds and save a life.

"I hope we will never have to experience this again, something needs to be done."

  3. 'No delay' in helping Varga - Uefapublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 24 June

    Scotland 0-1 Hungary

Uefa have said there was "no delay" in getting medical intervention to Hungary's Barnabas Varga after the forward lay motionless on the ground following a collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Varga's club team Ferencvarosi, who play in the Hungarian football league, confirmed Varga suffered a concussion and will "undergo surgery" for "multiple broken bones" in his face.

Uefa said the intervention of the team doctor happened "within 15 seconds of the incident", followed by the second stadium doctor, who conducted "a first assessment" and "treatment".

"The qualified pitchside emergency team were waiting pitchside, according to their protocol, and arrived with the stretcher as soon as their intervention was requested by the medics to evacuate the player for his immediate transfer to hospital," Uefa said.

"The coordination between all the medical staff on site was professional and everything was done in accordance with the applicable medical procedures. There was no delay in the treatment of and assistance to the player."

Scotland and Chelsea player Erin Cuthbert on her advice to Harry Kane: "I think the pundits are all entitled to their own opinion, that's their job, they have to do their job, of course, but Harry might feel a little bit aggrieved - they've all once been football players.

"I think sometimes it's an expectation, especially with England that they have to win every game comfortably. With the players that they've got, they have to do amazing, but that's just not how it works, every single game, so I think he's probably asking them to step into his shoes a little bit and remember the times where it didn't flow.

"They're in camp for hours and hours, having meetings on what they're doing and how to fix it.

"I think it's difficult and I think all that matters is your team bubble because nobody knows, really, what's going on inside, so I think you really have to protect your bubble and protect your own energy, of course."

England supporters shared their opinions about Harry Kane comments on Nicky Campbell's phone-in.

Here's is what some of them had to say:

Elliot in Cheadle: “Gary Lineker is correct in what he said. He was a world-class striker. He has more knowledge of that role than probably anybody in the UK. [The] England [team] represents this country, there has to be a pride in performance, a work rate. We all have a responsibility and England footballers have a big responsibility. If they don’t perform, they have to put up with the criticism pundits give them. Harry Kane is a 33-year-old bloke. His only job is professional football - make it look like you’re trying. All everyone wants to see if effort.”

Dave in Plymouth: “Ineptitude, one word.”

Chris in London: “There’s an old saying, nobody ever erects a statue to a critic. Over the passage of time, we’ll all still be talking about Kane’s performances yet some of the journalists comments and the pundits perhaps not so much. They’ll be forgotten about in a few weeks.”

  6. 'The only way to answer criticism is on the pitch'published at 13:53 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Former football manager and midfielder Peter Reid, speaking earlier on Nicky Campbell's BBC Radio 5 Live phone-in, about the criticism England's players have received during the Euros: "When you play for England, it comes with the territory if it isn't going well. I remember a long time ago [Gary] Lineker getting plenty in Mexico, do you know what he did, when we played Poland? He got a hat-trick. I remember [Alan] Shearer getting plenty of that in 1996, do you know what he did? Started scoring goals. That's the answer, the only way to answer.

"You've got to have a balance, we haven't been beaten yet, we haven't played well, if we get the shackles off, it could be a different story because that's the way competition football is. Criticism comes with the territory and the only way to answer, in my opinion, is on the pitch."

On Harry Kane's comments about pundits: "I wouldn't say it's fair, I think there's different ways to answer it. If you're involved in a competition, get that mentality before you go 'hey we're getting stick here, lets show them on the pitch, let's go out there, play well, win a game'. Which they will do, but I wouldn't come out with those comments. Like I said, the only way to answer is on the pitch."

  7. Pundits 'making strong tactical points'published at 13:45 British Summer Time 24 June

England v Slovenia (Tue, 20:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Football journalist Henry Winter speaking about 'Kane vs the pundits' on Nicky Campbell's phone-in: "When you look at what [Gary] Lineker said, he said it on his podcast, rather than the BBC. If you look at what Lineker and [Alan] Shearer said as former England strikers, as looking at Harry Kane and his performance, actually if you were Harry Kane you would say it was right that these ex-players, now pundits, know what they're talking about because they've been in my situation.

"Also, with both also being former England captains, they know the pressure, they know the difficulties of playing as a striker against a three-man defence and back-fours and they actually, if you look at what Shearer and Linker said, made some very constructive points. What they said made a lot of sense.

"Also, the criticism of this England team is pretty mild. Southgate, for me, gets an easy ride, given some of his tactical issues in key moments in key games. This is all mild, it's football related, it's not personal. This is not private lives stuff, they are making strong tactical points, which is why they are so well followed by England football fans and by many players."

Euro 2024: Harry Kane - 'Support us in the tournament judge us afterwards'

Harry Kane says that former England internationals who are now pundits should "remember what it’s like to wear the shirt" before they criticise Gareth Southgate’s side.

England captain Kane was one of a number of players who were criticised for their performance in the 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024 by a number of pundits, including ex-England internationals Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.

When asked about the critics on television, Kane said they should remember how "tough" it is to perform in a major tournament.

“I would never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially a player who has worn the shirt and knows what it is like to play for England," Kane said.

"But what ex-players now have got to realise is it is very hard not to listen to it now, especially for some players who are not used to it or some players who are new to the environment.”

The England squad is as good as any in this tournament, and better than most. BUT, the way they’ve played the two matches so far has been shockingly poor. The movement of the ball has been too slow and, far too often, sideways or backwards. We have to create more to score more. There’s no point in having players of the quality of Gordon, Eze and Palmer warming the bench while others are not delivering enough on the pitch. Southgate surely has to make changes for the final group game.

    Scotland 0-1 Hungary

Barnabas Varga's club team Ferencvarosi, who play in the Hungarian football league, have confirmed Varga has suffered a concussion following a mid-air clash with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

They confirmed he is likely to "undergo surgery" for "multiple broken bones" in his face.

Gunn came rushing out of his area to punch clear a cross, which Varga was attempting to get on the end of.

The Hungary forward's face ended up smashing into the arm of the Scotland goalkeeper as he successfully cleared the danger.

The 29-year-old was carried off the pitch on a stretcher and is reportedly "stable" after spending the night in a hospital in Stuttgart.

Steve Clarke has taken this team as far as he can. Unfortunately, he sets up like he's still in the SPFL. If you're going to play a back five and hope to frustrate teams, you need top class defenders and pace throughout the team we have neither. His reluctance to change has cost us, we should have started a more attack-minded team. I'd rather go out and say 'yeah we had a proper go at them' rather than this whimper of an effort.

We don't have a huge pool of players to pick from at the top level. Steve [Clarke] has done a brilliant job with the player he has got and getting us to the tournament in the first place.

We were thrilled when we qualified. He has taken us to the last couple of minutes tonight with a chance of qualifying for the last 16, so there is no shame in it. We just don't have a lot of top, top players at the moment to make a difference.

    David Moyes

I don't think Scotland were great tonight but they done a job and got themselves into a situation with 15-20 minutes to go we could be going through. It looked for all purposes that we had a real good chance to do so.

But we didn't have enough shots on goal, we didn't play quick enough, we didn't cause them enough problems.

To be fair I was really disappointed in Hungary. What I saw tonight I don't think there will be too many teams worried on what they showed tonight.
