I don’t get this “disrespecting the tournament” attitude from some fans. Postecoglou gets it for leaving out his best attack and Maresca got it for not including Palmer in his European squad. Ask yourselves this; Would you rather do well in a second/third tier European competition or qualify for the Champions League? They are both showing massive respect for their clubs primary competition, their own domestic league.

This is the first time Tottenham have ever played a Hungarian team in Uefa competition.

The Uefa website says Ferencvaros and Tottenham have met twice before in Budapest... in 1905 and 1912 in Spurs' foreign tours.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou met them twice in the 2021-22 Europa League, with his Celtic side winning both home and away.

It's hard to imagine how Larne's players are feeling right now.

There's been so much talk about them making history, and now their dreams are about to become a reality.

They'll be going through all their usual routines ahead of kick-off, but unlike the familiarity of fixtures around Northern Ireland, they're on the biggest stage of their careers.

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to TNT Sports about Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear starting: "They have been with us since the start of pre-season. Mikey has had a couple of opportunities off the bench. We have been keen to give them both game time and tonight is the ideal time for it.

"I am confident they will be able to handle themselves. I have no fear about putting them out there."

On momentum: "The reason we have momentum is we have changed the team. We have given players the chance to rest and that is the way we keep momentum.

"European games are always different to continental games. It is always a challenge with different conditions, there's things we have to cope with and finding solutions in our football is key."

On the atmosphere: "It will be a great atmosphere and I am sure the lads will enjoy it. A great challenge for us."

  5. 'We are guinea pigs'published at 17:32 British Summer Time 3 October

    Molde v Larne (17:45 BST)

Larne boss Tiernan Lynch, speaking to TNT Sports: "There's been a lot of talk about where we have come as a club. We want to give a good account of ourselves. There's a bit of excitement and a bit of nervousness. We need to embrace the challenge.

"Playing at this stage in Europe is something we want to happen in our league on a regular basis. We are the guinea pigs. Molde are a good side and there is a lot of experience in their side.

"These are one-off games. There is nothing to lose. It has the makings of a good game. There have been plenty of minnows that have come into big competitions and done well. We are minnows."

I was slightly surprised. I think Postecoglou must have huge trust in his young players.

To put so many in, I can understand or one two, of course there's a sprinkling of experience, but it must be difficult. I mean, first European start, first start for some of these players.

I mean, Mikey Moore has been making waves for a while through the youth teams, from 15 years old, people were talking about him as a potential player, so I think it's probably his time but I just thought there'd be a little bit more experience around him.

From the second tier of Northern Irish football to a debut in a major European competition in the space of five years, Larne will break new ground when they take on Molde in the Uefa Conference League.

By qualifying in dramatic fashion - Andy Ryan's hat-trick fired the 10 men of east Antrim to glory against Gibraltarians Lincoln Red Imps at the play-off stage - the Inver Park side became the first Irish Premiership side to reach this stage of a European competition.

This game in mountainous western Norway is the first of six extremely difficult fixtures.

Larne will also face Shamrock Rovers, St Gallen, Olimpija, Dinamo Minsk and Gent in their first European campaign.

Now a leading side in Northern Ireland, they will be the underdogs in each and every fixture, and that lack of expectation from the outside provides an opportunity.

There is nothing to lose, yet everything to gain.

It's a big risk away from home, four teenagers playing in a starting line up and Ferencvaros are no mugs.

They've been a Champions League team, Hungarian football is on the up.

It'll be interesting to see how them boys cope. The senior players, Romeros of this world, Werner, Porro, Bissouma, big night for them tonight.

You have to play not only your own game, but you have to play with your voice as well because they will be feeling nerves, they will be feeling nerves those young lads.

Re. Jay at 17:10 - What's the point of having exciting young players if you don't give them game time? It's a brilliant opportunity for the kids, in a competition where a few wins from eight matches will see you to the next round. Those fans who made the trip will be delighted to see Spurs academy players getting a start I'm sure!

Ferencvaros' manager is Dutchman Pascal Jansen, who previously managed AZ Alkmaar.

Jansen, 51, was born in London to an English mother.

"I love everything about the UK," he said.

"It’ll be a special match for me given that I’m the Fradi coach, and I’m focusing on achieving the best result possible.

"Tottenham were one of my favourite teams, among others, as a child, but over my career I’ve learned how to handle this."

Micky Van de Ven is one of the quickest defenders I can think of.

I think they are equal Christian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. Van de Ven is probably a bit quicker, but you wouldn’t want to go up against Romero as he’s super aggressive.

He is an animal at times with how he uses his body. The way he attacks the ball I think he is phenomenal.

Ange Postecoglou has said many times that his best two players have to be his centre-halves and they have to be mobile - that's why he got rid of Eric Dier.

On Spurs’ day they're sensational to watch. When it works, it works superbly well. But when it doesn’t people rip them to shreds.

This will be the first Europa Conference League meeting between Dinamo Minsk and Hearts.

It is also Dinamo's debut in the competition, after failing to make it through the qualifying rounds in the last two seasons.

The champions of Belarus, who won the Belarusian Premier League for the first time since 2004 last term, will host Hearts at the Mehdi Huseynzade Stadium in Sumqayit, Azerbaijan.

Uefa decided in March 2022 that Belarusian teams would have to play at a neutral venue with no fans present, due to the country's support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Minsk's other European 'home' games this season have been played in northern Hungary, but they need a category four stadium for the league phase.

Dinamo manager Vadim Skripchenko said the club also chose the venue because they can get a direct flight from Minsk, as Azerbaijan is "friendly" to Belarus.

Ange Postecoglou commented recently that he always wins something in his second season. Well, judging by his team selection tonight it won’t be the Europa league. It also shows a lack of respect to the competition, opposition and the fans who pay good money following them around. Not a cheap and easy place to get to.

When Molde last played an Irish Premiership outfit in Europe back in 2018 - then managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and with a 17-year-old Erling Haaland marked out of the game by Glenavon's Andrew Doyle - Larne were still in the second tier.

After being taken over by local businessman Kenny Bruce in 2017, Larne's fortunes changed both on and off the pitch.

Their Inver Park ground underwent a much-needed facelift, with an artificial pitch installed and new stands put up, and increased marketing and professionalism brought fans, young and old, to the ground.

When the whistle blew, they romped to success in the Championship by 17 points to earn promotion to the Irish Premiership in 2019 - and from there they haven't looked back.

Hearts finished a brilliant third in the Scottish Premiership last season to secure European football.

This campaign has been far from smooth sailing up to this point.

Hearts are still searching for their first win of the season at the 11th attempt, having sacked manager Steven Naismith last month after a run of eight successive defeats.

They're winless in their 10 matches in all competitions this season, but ended their eight-game losing run at the weekend when they drew with Ross County in interim manager Liam Fox's first game in charge.

  16. Postecoglou talks about Puskas 'connection'published at 17:01 British Summer Time 3 October

    Ferencvaros v Tottenham (17:45 BST)

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou spoke about his "special connection" with Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas in the build-up to this game.

Postecoglou played under Puskas, who won the European Cup three times with Real Madrid, when he was the manager of South Melbourne in Australia.

Puskas played for Ferencvaros's Budapest rivals Honved.

"I was blessed to be able to spend three years in the company of one of the greatest footballers of all time, but more importantly for me an outstanding person," said Postecoglou.

"He was one of the greatest people I've ever come across and I feel really fortunate to have had those three years with him, where I was able to sit there and talk to a person who in the football world had done everything, but more importantly, a person who I had so much respect and admiration for.

"I still think about it and it still feels unreal to me that I got that opportunity being based in Australia. As you get older you keep those experiences even more.

"I would love for him to still be around today to see where I am because he played a role in me becoming certainly the football manager I am. He played a role in that but also the person I've become."

  17. Is tonight a record?published at 16:58 British Summer Time 3 October

We wondered if seven UK teams playing in Europe in one night might be a record so we asked Opta.

And it turns out it's not even halfway there.

On 18 September 1968 and 16 September 1981 they say there were 15 different British teams in action.

The 1968 stat includes the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, which was the predecessor of the Uefa Cup.
