As ever, already glossing over our achievement of reaching the final, by asking about Gareth Southgate's future. What about Southgate's present? Let's celebrate reaching consecutive Euros finals and actually enjoy this. Trust me, you'll have plenty of time to look back on these last eight years as "the good old days".

During Spain's semi-final win over France, Jesus Navas started at right-back in place of Dani Carvajal, before being replaced by Athletic Bilbao's Daniel Vivian.

The 25-year-old was named in Spain's squad on his mum's birthday and he spoke about that during a news conference on Thursday.

"That was a very beautiful moment," he said. "It was already a special day but all the more fantastic to celebrate it by being named in Spain's Euros squad on her birthday.

"My dad and I were in the bakery to buy her cake and I was bombarded by messages on my phone so I deduced: 'Ah! I've miscalculated when the squad is announced!'"

I think Gareth Southgate will go regardless of the result on Sunday. If he wins he goes out on a massive high. If he loses he will be the nearly man but will feel it's time to call it a day. But we're all behind him for Sunday! Come on the boys! And success must mean it will be 'arise Sir Gareth'!

Dani Carvajal is available again after a one-match suspension so should return at right-back for Spain, but will they select Nacho or Robin le Normand in the centre of defence?

And how about Alvaro Morata? How is the Atletico Madrid striker after a security guard slipped into him as the side celebrated their semi-final win, seemingly injuring his knee?

Spain's potential starting XI: Unai Simon, Dani Carvajal, Nacho, Aymeric Laporte, Marc Cucurella, Lamine Yamal, Fabian Ruiz, Rodri, Nico Williams, Dani Olmo, Alvaro Morata.

Two more years for Southgate to get England promoted in the Nations League and one last World Cup? Anyone? I'm bracing myself for the backlash.

Southgate's record is incredible, and worthy of respect and praise.....but with the array of talent England have I cannot help but wonder what Bielsa or Pep might have done with the same players? Churlish in the extreme but... we are underdogs, yet are Spain man for man really better than England?

  9. 'Last year's final was massive, so I can't imagine this one'published at 09:11 British Summer Time 12 July

Spain v England (Sun, 20:00 BST)

    England

Talking on Lions' Den, England's YouTube show, Cole Palmer spoke about how the Three Lions have developed through Euro 2024 and about winning the European Championship at Under-21 level last year.

"In the first few games, we didn't play the best that we could and everyone knew that," added the Chelsea forward.

"But now I think as the tournament's gone on, especially [Wednesday], I think we had our best game in the tournament, and that's what you want going into the later stages.

"It's huge. We played them last year in the Under-21s final, England versus Spain. Even that was a massive game, so I can't imagine this one."

A Palmer free-kick deflected in off Liverpool's Curtis Jones for the only goal as England won that game 1-0. Jones missed out on the final squad for Euro 2024 but Palmer and Anthony Gordon, who also started last year's Under-21 final, made the cut.

Southgate is a gent and great man and done great things for English football, but we were a few seconds from an embarrassing exit, it was Jude who saved him, the early negativity is still a worry as was the shape of the team, and it was his negativity and caution that cost us the final against Italy. I would like a new manager and for Southgate to leave on a high with big applause.

    England

Cole Palmer has told Lions' Den, England's YouTube show, what the mood was like in the camp after Wednesday's semi-final win: "Everyone was buzzing, all [Wednesday] night on the bus, tunes were on, everyone was just enjoying it.

"But obviously it's a short turnaround and it's a massive, massive game to change our lives, our family's lives, and to make everyone proud. That's what we're trying to do.

"I think if you've got to this final then you have to hopefully finish the job. It's all good getting to the final, and you've got to enjoy it because you don't get many moments to enjoy. But, no, everyone just wants to win so bad."

I have a message to the England team. Not that it will be read by any of them but hey, you never know. For all your trips and falls, stumbles and stutters on your Euro journey, you are in the final. You have made history. Like the English rose you have bloomed. We are behind you, win or lose. You have galvanised our nation. It's not been pretty or easy on the eye but it has been English. Now is the time to let the Three Lions roar, now is the time to let the pressure be released. We are proud of you all. Now go out on Sunday and play with your heart on your sleeve, and leave everything on the pitch. Silence your critics, no more years of hurt. Lift the trophy. For you... your families... your fans... your nation!!

England's men have now gone 58 years since their last success in a major tournament, when they lifted the 1966 World Cup on home soil.

They came close to ending the run at Euro 2020 - played in 2021, of course - but ultimately lost to Italy on penalties in the final. The years in between those two finals brought plenty of disappointment.

Gareth Southgate's side have a chance on Sunday to end their trophy drought when they play Spain in the Euro 2024 final, the Three Lions' first major final overseas.

BBC Sport has picked 10 of the most heartbreaking moments, including penalty shootout exits, red cards and shock defeats.

We've only picked out moments from tournaments themselves, not times when England have failed to qualify - those are too painful to even mention!

Click here to relive the hurt - for England fans, let's hope that soon the pain will be over!

ICYMI, midfielder Declan Rice said before the last Euros final that if England win he would have his first beer.

The Three Lions were beaten on penalties, of course, but Rice has said that "since then, I’ve had a beer, but I had it with a bit of lemonade!"

If England win this time, though, he's vowed to have "a proper beer".

"I’ll probably have to hold my nose," he added. "I hate the smell!"

England head coach Gareth Southgate celebrates victory over the Netherlands at Euro 2024Image source, Getty Images

What did Gareth show [against the Netherlands] by taking Harry Kane off? Strong management - and it was tactical. I think it has been a problem throughout this tournament that England haven’t had a big enough threat in behind, stretching defences, and that isn’t really what Harry Kane does.

Taking Harry Kane off, when you know he’s probably the most ruthless striker in the tournament, because Ollie Watkins is a different type of striker - he makes those movements in behind. That was excellent management from Gareth.

The other vindication is Cole Palmer. I think he’s actually unlucky not to start a game for England but against the Netherlands, [Phil] Foden had his best game.

To take him off, I thought it was really courageous, when Foden was playing so well. Those two substitutes teaming up and Watkins finishing like he did, it was a great moment.

Alex Howell also spoke with Gareth Southgate in May, when the England manager was entering the final six months of his deal, and he said that his contract situation is "not an issue and never has been".

Southgate, who has been in charge of the Three Lions since 2016, considered leaving the job after the World Cup quarter-final defeat by France in Qatar but stayed on.

Euro 2024 is the fourth major tournament he has overseen as manager and the 53-year-old, who has passed Sir Bobby Robson for games as England manager in Germany, said the talk about his future would not be a distraction.

"Well, for me, it's not an issue and never has been," Southgate said. "I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be."
