UEFA Champions League
All competitions
Newcastle have won just three of their 13 meetings with French opponents in all competitions (D4 L6), with this the first time they've ever faced PSG.
Paris Saint-Germain have lost five of their last seven UEFA Champions League games against English sides, with the exceptions being a 3-1 win at Manchester United (December 2020) and a 2-0 home win over Manchester City (September 2021).
Newcastle's 0-0 draw with Milan on MD1 was just their third clean sheet in 19 UEFA Champions League matches. They've never recorded back-to-back shutouts in the competition before.
Newcastle have a 56% win rate in UEFA Champions League home matches (W5 D0 L4), compared to just 20% away from home (W2 D3 L5).
Paris Saint-Germain have won their second group stage game in each of the last 10 UEFA Champions League seasons, scoring 29 goals and conceding just five. However, three of their last four defeats in the group stages of the competition have been against Premier League sides (Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City).
Newcastle’s Expected Goals total on MD1 against Milan was just 0.28 – the second lowest of any team in the opening round of the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League. Indeed, Eddie Howe’s side only recorded one shot on target in the match and that came in the 95th minute through Sean Longstaff.
PSG manager Luis Enrique was the first player to score a UEFA Champions League goal against Newcastle, doing so for Barcelona in September 1997 in a 3-2 defeat at St James’ Park. He’s won 15 of his 19 group stage matches as manager (D2 L2), although one of his defeats was in England against Man City back in November 2016 when Barcelona boss (1-3).
Only Milan's Rade Krunic and Man City's Julián Álvarez (seven each) created more chances on MD1 of this season's UEFA Champions League than PSG's Ousmane Dembélé (6). Dembélé also carried the ball 90 metres further than any other winger on MD1 (373m).
Newcastle's Nick Pope became the fifth English keeper to keep a clean sheet on his first UEFA Champions League start last time out, and first since Fraser Forster in 2012. No English keeper has ever kept a clean sheet in their first two starts in the competition before.
PSG's Kylian Mbappé has scored a UEFA Champions League goal against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester United at Old Trafford and Liverpool at Anfield. He could become the fourth player to score an away goal at four different English venues in the competition, after Cristiano Ronaldo (5), Lionel Messi (4) and Robert Lewandowski (4).
