  4. It's tight at the bottompublished at 16:56 Greenwich Mean Time

Things are tight at the bottom!

Three huge points for Everton push them up to ninth, while Aston Villa's big win shoots them up to seventh. Both now sit four points clear of the bottom.

West Ham's defeat leaves them a point further back but two ahead of Leicester and three above Palace.

Interim Arsenal boss Renee Slegers speaking to Sky Sports: "This is not one of our best performances today. I think Liverpool get the game where they wanted to go. So lots of set pieces, transitional, scrappy, it’s duels and I think we give them the game they want and we should have dictated what the game would look like.

"I think we do business today. Keep a clean sheet, win with one goal, get the three points which was most important today."

On getting a clean sheet: "It means so much, it gives a good foundation for the team to have that trust. We are so solid defensively, whenever it comes in the game we’ll get chances and we can win games.

"We need to be alert always on set pieces. We work on the first phases and also the second and third phases of set pieces. We know that's important, the ball lands in box and someone gets the wrong touch, you have to be there. Alessia [Russo] is very sharp at the moment, very instinctive to pick those balls up.

"We need to be more clinical and we've been doing really well. Obviously it's a very intensive block with playing a lot of games, away travel to Norway, came home in the middle of the night, recharge, travel to Liverpool which is also quite a long bus trip. What we've been going through as a team, still getting the win today, it’s very positive."

On title rivals dropping points: "We can't control what the other teams do, we saw the results and I think the girls saw Chelsea yesterday and they got some extra motivation out of that but still it doesn't mean anything. I don’t think you should get dragged away in those emotions. It's still about what we can do, very happy everything in our control we did today, we took the three points."

On getting the backing from the fans: "I think for me it’s meant a lot but for the players as well it feels so good to have the backing from the fans, the club, everyone. I think we went through hard times and feeling that people support us. It means the world."

  7. 'The performance sums us up'published at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Everton 2-0 Man City

    Everton

One of Everton’s goalscorers Lucy Hope speaking to BBC Two: "To be fair I think it has been coming all season, we've had a few narrow defeats in past games, one two goals being the difference and to be fair the performance sums us up - gritty, determined and I thought we executed our game plan perfectly.

"Trying to limit chances, we know City are a great side. The game plan was to sit back, make it hard and hit them on the counter and I think you can say it went pretty well."

On her position: "I don't feel like I want to get too attached to certain positions.

"I feel like I can read the game quite well so as long as I can see it in front of me, I feel like I can help people, direct people and be a leader. I also want to chip in with goals being a midfielder I kind of miss that.

"Obviously I was delighted to get the goal but the win for the team is the most important thing because it’s such a vital time in the season. You break off for Christmas, you want to end on a high. I'm just absolutely delighted for everybody."

Goalscorer Alessia Russo speaking to Sky Sports: "Set plays are a massive part of football, they can win and lose you games, so it was important today and really happy to get three points."

On her form: "Yeah I'm feeling good I think I'm just enjoying my football. I play my best when I'm happy and enjoying football. We’re really making connections on pitch, today was tough we know that. Liverpool away is a tough game so there are lost of things we are gonna make better and take from today but three points is most important."

On Renee Slegers: "She’s been great. She’s making me feel confident and yeah the team in general, I think we know how good we are as a squad, know how good the staff are and we are just keeping our head down and focussing.

On whether she wants Slegers to get the job: "Look we’re really happy as a squad and doing really well, ultimately it's a club decision but she's been great. Before as an assistant she was great too, she’s stepped up and we’re really enjoying it.

"It’s hard to put it down to one thing but she has been great. We have been finding form, different connections, building on lots in training, we are really happy with it."

On Christmas break: "I never really want to stop playing football but it'll be nice to reset and refocus and spend some time with family and then go again in the new year."

On title rivals dropping points: "Obviously you have one eye on that but ultimately it's down to what we do, all we can focus on is getting our points, taking care of our business and seeing what happens."

BBC Radio 5 Live at St Helens Stadium

For Renee Slegers, I'll again ask her if she wants the job outright, no doubt the interim boss will straight bat the question! She's 10 unbeaten since coming in for departed Jonas Eidevall.

It wasn't the prettiest game for the packed away end to enjoy but it pushes Arsenal back into the Champions League spots. A positive end to their year in the WSL.

  12. Positives for Liverpool despite fourth straight league defeatpublished at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time

    FT: Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

    Sanny Rudravajhala
BBC Radio 5 Live at St Helens Stadium

I was at Liverpool's chastening 4-0 defeat at Manchester United last week and although it's a fourth straight league defeat, there are positives here.

Matt Beard's squad has been stretched with injuries and to go toe-to-toe with such a strong Arsenal side has to be some comfort for the Liverpool boss.

They got lucky with the penalty miss, responded well and were pushing right to the end.

  13. 'Both teams can take a lot of credit'published at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time

    Natasha Dowie
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

A hard-fought three points by Arsenal. Great game and a good effort by both teams.

Both teams can take a lot of credit from the game today. Liverpool could have easily just sat in today, defended and tried to make it ugly but actually they had a go.

Also, credit to Arsenal. It wasn't probably their best performance but they were always the team that had the ball, were in control.

Liverpool attempted six shots in this game, their lowest total in a single match in the WSL this season.

    Liverpool 0-1 Arsenal

That is that, it's three points for Arsenal as they win for the fourth time on the spin.

For Liverpool, it's a fourth loss in a row and there's plenty to work on when the WSL resumes in January.

It's quite clear to see why Liverpool have only scored nine goals this season. They look terribly short of ideas in attack.

It's going to be a nerve-wracking last few minutes for Arsenal.

It's pretty much do or die for Liverpool. They've got nothing to lose now. They have to go for it.

With Arsenal, they have got to manage the game.
