Manchester City left Monaco frustrated after surrendering two points late on, but one huge positive to take away is the goal-scoring antics of Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian striker scored either side of half-time to take his tally for the season to 11 goals in eight games in all competitions, his second best start to a season in a City shirt.

He has failed to score in just one of his eight appearances this season.

    2023-24: 7

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland spoke to TNT Sports after his side conceded a late equaliser to Monaco.

"We need more energy. We need to get at them more as we did in the first half.

"Every Champions League game is tough, look at last year when we went out. There are not many teams who have won their first two games."

Nine games played. One draw, one loss - 18 scored and three conceded. Perfect in the Champions League. Two points off the top in the league. Key players were injured or rotated each game. And I'm still seeing people having a pop at Arsenal. Drop the agenda, people, you are starting to look silly!

    Matt

Very pleased with Arsenal's performance. Some excellent individual performances from Odegaard, Martinelli, Raya, and others. Gyokeres is playing well even though he may not be scoring consistently.

Manchester City are unbeaten in their last six games, but a worrying trend is beginning to emerge of conceding late goals.

They have conceded eight times in all competitions so far, but half of those have come at crucial periods in each half.

    • 23 August: 2-0 home loss against Tottenham after conceding in the third minute of injury-time in the first half
    • 31 August: 2-1 loss at Brighton after conceding in the 89th minute
    • 21 September: 1-1 draw at Arsenal after conceding in the 93rd minute
    • 1 October: 2-2 draw at Monaco after conceding in the 90th minute

    You wouldn't panic.

Everyone wants to win their games and get the adulation of what a great team you are but it is not normal to keep doing it year on year.

Man City have done it for so many years but they are having a bit of a struggle over the last couple of years. They have players who can turn games and win you big competitions and trophies.

They will be there or thereabouts, they just have to get the squad together and be fit coming in to the new year.

Anybody remember You are the Ref? Let's have a quick game.

Was the referee right to award Monaco a penalty after Manchester City's Nico Gonzalez made contact with both the ball and the face of Eric Dier?

Thumbs up for yes, down for no.

City fan here. The penalty decision was awful, and I will die on that hill. But it doesn't change the fact that we were so wasteful and should have been out of sight by the time it happened. Still, we'll bounce back, but I think Arsenal will go further than any English team.

    Harry

Let's take a breath before we start tearing Manchester City apart for conceding late. The penalty shouldn't have been given. If the defender hadn't done anything, he'd have been absolutely crucified in the press. You can't plan for poor VAR decisions.

Harry Kane is not really surprising. I do wonder, as weird as it is to say about the England captain, whether we kind of underestimate what he is doing at Bayern. It has been astonishing his productivity at Bayern Munich.

Kane struck twice in Bayern Munich's Champions League win over Pafos, taking his tally to 17 goals in all competitions this season.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking on Martin Odegaard: "He has all the licence in the world to go forward.

"And to play with that freedom and with that level of play, level of threat.

"Not only with the passes; the way he was taking the ball and carrying the ball and making runs and arriving in dangerous areas.

"He put three people through to score a goal, he should have scored a goal as well. Great to have him back, he played some very good minutes in Newcastle to help us win the game and I think [here] he was phenomenal."

A key factor in Arsenal's comeback win against Newcastle was the performance of captain Odegaard from the bench.

He dictated play and put in the corner which centre-back Gabriel headed in to secure a crucial three points.

Odegaard has been battling with a shoulder problem and is building up his fitness after a frustrating time at the beginning of this season.

He now looks to be over that issue and was handed a start against Olympiacos.

Arsenal have changed their style of play this season to be more direct bring out the best in Gyokeres.

Odegaard, who seemed to have all the time he wanted on the ball in midfield, repeatedly played dangerous balls in behind the Olympiacos defence and the opening goal came from one of those instances.

He then set up Saka for the second - and claimed the assist his performance deserved.

Gabriel Martinelli's early goal helped Arsenal maintain their perfect start to the league phase of the Champions League as they overcame Olympiacos.

Having beaten Athletic Club in their first game of the competition thanks to a goal and an assist from the Brazilian forward, he was again crucial for the Gunners.

Striker Viktor Gyokeres powered his way through the Greek side's defence, but when his shot bounced off the post after being saved by Konstantinos Tzolakis, Martinelli was on hand to tap in the rebound.

Substitute Bukayo Saka sealed the success in added time with a shot that squeezed through the legs of Tzolakis.

Anthony Gordon scored two penalties against Union Saint-Gilloise as Newcastle United claimed a convincing first Champions League win of the season.

Newcastle suffered a dramatic defeat at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday, but the clinical visitors looked like a side eager to respond as they secured their first away victory in the competition since 2003.

There was certainly no sign of a hangover at Lotto Park when Nick Woltemade opened the scoring in the 17th minute.

Winger Anthony Elanga whipped a cross into the box and Union could only clear the ball as far as the lurking Sandro Tonali on the edge of the area.

Tonali caught the ball sweetly on the volley and the Italian's effort took a deflection off record signing Woltemade to wrongfoot goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen.

Harvey Barnes added a fourth late on with a fine finish from inside the box to seal the win in Brussels.

It is a bit lazy from the defenders. Dier made a strong, aggressive run from deep and the defenders let him bully them.

There was not much contact but a really stupid thing to do in the box in such a big game in the last minute. There was no doubt they were going to give a penalty. You just have to see the picture for one second on the screen and it is a penalty in European football.

Late Dier penalty helps Monaco snatch draw against Man City

Eric Dier's cool last-minute penalty earned a Champions League draw for Monaco against Manchester City, despite Erling Haaland continuing his scintillating start to the season by scoring twice.

Haaland scored a first-half double to take his tally to 52 goals in just 50 games in the competition as City stretched their unbeaten run to six games.

But the visitors were pegged back in the 90th minute when Dier converted from the spot after being kicked in the head by Nico Gonzalez.

Norway's Haaland had not had a touch of the ball in the first 15 minutes but with his first, he latched on to Josko Gvardiol's dinked pass and lobbed a cool finish over the advancing Philipp Kohn.

Jordan Teze equalised just three minutes later with a thunderbolt strike from outside the area, which arrowed into the top corner and gave Gianluigi Donnarumma no chance.
