Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris also spoke about his side's mindset and philosophy:

"It's not our approach. We want to express our ideas, our football as a unit and as a club and after that you have a game. And if the opponent is stronger than us, we will respect that but without any regrets at the end."

Regis Le Bris is vying to become the first Sunderland manager to oversee back-to-back top-flight away wins since Gus Poyet nine years ago – a feat the Black Cats achieved, coincidentally, courtesy of a 1-0 victory against Manchester United in May 2014.

That is the Wearsiders’ only win away to United in the past 57 years but the newly promoted side will be high on confidence following last weekend's win at Nottingham Forest.

This is the Black Cats' 17th season in the Premier League but the first in which their points tally has been in double figures after six games. They have not made a better start to a top-flight campaign for 70 years.

Sunderland are only the seventh promoted side to reach 11 points at this stage of a Premier League season – the other six all stayed up.

  5. Positives for Nuno but set-pieces still a concernpublished at 14:03 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Tom McCoy
    BBC Sport journalist

There were some encouraging signs for West Ham in Monday’s 1-1 draw at Everton, their first game under Nuno Espirito Santo. The Londoners had 29 touches in the opposition box, their highest total in a Premier League match this season. They also allowed their opponents an expected goals total of just 0.72, the Hammers’ lowest figure of the campaign.

But a familiar weakness was exposed yet again, with West Ham conceding from a corner (via a second-phase delivery) for the eighth time already in 2025-26.

That issue will have to be addressed before Saturday’s match against Arsenal, who have scored six of their 12 top-flight goals this term from corners.

In fact, 16.7% of the Gunners’ total league goals under Mikel Arteta have come from corners. Amongst managers whose teams have scored at least 300 Premier League goals, only Tony Pulis (21.9%) and Sean Dyche (18.6%) have higher percentages.

  6. 'It's a good record to have'published at 14:01 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on West Ham winning on their last two league trips to Arsenal: "It's a good record to have going to Arsenal, it gives us confidence. But we are aware that we will face a very good opponent, good manager and so many solutions, in a good momentum, it's a good test."

  7. 'Kilman has been very helpful'published at 13:57 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on reuniting with Max Kilman, who could make his 200th senior club appearance:

"I am delighted for him, he is an important member of the squad.

"He knows how we approach things, our ethic in the training sessions, how serious we are in competition. Max has been very helpful. "

  8. 'We have to compete'published at 13:54 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on the culture at the club:

"We have to compete, this is the main message that has been passed to me.

"We need to compete, be strong, be brave, this is the West Ham way. Let's try!"

On West Ham struggling to defend from set-pieces, and coming up against a team in Arsenal that is good at scoring from them:

"That is a big problem we have to solve! We have been working on it, I think we have improved, but we still have a problem in the second phase. It is something we are really concerned about and are trying to address. We have to solve it.

"Nowadays set-pieces have a huge impact on the game. We need to be more aggressive on our offensive to take advantage."

  9. Postpublished at 13:51 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo says Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan Bissaka are back in training after missing the trip to Everton, but that George Earthy will miss the next four to six weeks:

"Today we have 22 boys in training. Tomorrow we will see."

  10. 'We need the full squad and everyone healthy'published at 13:49 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on whether James Ward-Prowse will feature after being omitted from his squad on Monday:

"What I see is that we are trying to know the players as soon as possible, as best as we can, so we can make the proper solutions and decisions.

"James was not involved, let's see, we still have one more training session [before Saturday]. We always have the mindset of what the team needs and what we want. The season is long, it's too soon to say what we expect. We need the full squad and everyone healthy."

  11. 'We as managers don't chose, we are chosen'published at 13:45 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on leaving Nottingham Forest:

"It was an amazing season for us, a special season. What is most important is the memories you create, we did something really nice there.

"I am really grateful for the messages to the fans, players, the way they treated us."

On replacing Graham Potter, who was sacked the day after giving a news conference:

"We as managers don't chose, we are chosen.

"The timing and decisions is not what us coaches make. I have sympathy for Graham, he is someone I really admire and I've known him personally for many years. I have huge respect for him and his coaching staff."

  12. 'What I'm worried about is the bond between the team and the fans'published at 13:42 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on tensions between the fanbase and the club hierarchy:

"[We want to] bring the fans closer to us, the fans were there in Liverpool [against Everton] and the help they gave us was amazing. On Saturday they will be there supporting us, so it's up to us to give back.

"These issues you mentioned [fan advisory board writing to club about concerns] is something that is not up to me. What I'm worried about is the bond between the team and the fans, it's really important. The boys, when they get the help of the fans, feel free and joy."

  13. 'It's been hard work'published at 13:38 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo on his first week at the club: "It's been hard work - I think everybody at the club is making a big effort to help. We're trying to get things going, get to know each other better.

"The people and coaching staff that are here have been really helpful. Especially helping to give me a deep knowledge about West Ham. I cannot thank them enough."

  15. How did West Ham play against Everton?published at 13:33 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    Adam Millington
    BBC Sport journalist

Nuno Espirito Santo has taken over a West Ham side in the middle of a horrible run of form, having lost four of their first five games, and he will hope this draw marks the start of an improved new era.

While West Ham's build-up play was often underwhelming, forward Crysencio Summerville and left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf were bright sparks down the Hammers' left.

Dutchman Summerville carried the ball well and looked to stretch the Everton back-line out of position, while Diouf was too much for Toffees right-back Jake O'Brien to handle at times and his cross led to Bowen's equaliser.

West Ham's goal immediately made them much more threatening as they took the game to Everton, picking up their first points in the Premier League since the end of August.

  16. Can Nuno continue away streak?published at 13:30 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

Travelling away to Arsenal in your second game in charge is a big ask for Nuno Espirito Santo, but there is a big chance to make history.

West Ham are looking to become only the second side to win three successive Premier League away games against Arsenal, after Manchester City, who won six on the bounce from March 2018 to February 2023.

  17. Nuno speaking shortlypublished at 13:25 BST 2 October

Arsenal v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 BST)

    West Ham United

We'll soon be hearing from West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who is still getting settled in east London after being appointed successor to Graham Potter on Saturday.

The former Wolves and Nottingham Forest boss took charge of his new side for the first time on Monday, and earned his first point as the Hammers drew 1-1 with Everton on Merseyside.

On Saturday he faces another away trip, this time to north London to take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

  18. Key Fulham duo missing for visit to Bournemouthpublished at 13:21 BST 2 October

Bournemouth v Fulham (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Fulham

Marco Silva revealed that Rodrigo Muniz and Kenny Tete are both out for Fulham's Friday night visit to the Vitality Stadium.

Though Tete's injury concerns the same knee, the Fulham manager explained that it is a different issue to that which kept Tete sidelined for four months last season. Silva said: "We are going to keep progressing him in the same type of recovery, and surgery is not necessary."

Meanwhile, Muniz has a hamstring injury, and neither his injury nor Tete's are expected to be quick fixes, with Silva casting doubt over their availability after the international break.

“Big miss for us, a big blow for us in terms of two important players, but it is what it is," Silva said. "About how long, we have to wait.”

When he spoke to the press on Thursday morning, Silva could not give any certainty about Raul Jimenez, who was forced off after just ten minutes at Villa Park on Sunday, and said Jimenez would be assessed today.
