As someone who didn't watch the match, I'm really confused. According to Arteta they were the best team in the UCL, and according to the downvoted Sam (7.44) and Christian (7.47) they played well. But according to the upvoted Matt (7.31) they played like Pulis' Stoke. So, which is it?

Despite the loss Arsenal are still rebuilding the squad and the club culture, no need to panic yet. In 2020 and 2021 Arsenal finished 8th followed by 5th in 2022 as the process started, now we could be 2nd for the following 3 years. We missed Champions League football for years and now we reached the quarters last year and the semis this year. Yes football is about winning trophies but being amongst the top teams gives you a chance to win. Get a striker please Mikel.

  3. 'After 20 minutes it should have been 3-0'published at 08:04 British Summer Time 8 May

FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg)

    Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports: "When you look at the two games their best player on the pitch has been the goalkeeper, he has been the difference for them in the tie. We were very close, much closer than the result showed but unfortunately we are out. I am very proud of the players.

"After 20 minutes it should have been 3-0. There is something extra you need to go your way in the competition and it didn't. We were very close and for long periods of both games we were much better than them but we are not there and that has to hurt.

"If we want to win this competition we have to realise that. There are certain things that are on us. You shouldn't just be understanding we are out. That is not the way I look at it.

"100% I don't think there's been a better team [than Arsenal] in the competition from what I have seen, but we are out. This competition is about the boxes and in both boxes are the strikers and the goalkeepers and theirs was the best in both games."

Arteta sounds deluded when he says things like that. If Chelsea and/or Spurs win the Europa Conference or Europa League, Arsenal won't even be the best team in London this year, let alone Europe.

FT: PSG 2-1 Arsenal (3-1 on agg)

    Arsenal

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard speaking to TNT Sports:

"We gave it a proper go. We started the game really well. We were on the front foot, had the momentum, a few big chances but in the end it wasn't enough. Between the boxes we did well inside the two over the two games we weren't good enough. Credit to their goalkeeper who made amazing saves. It wasn't enough and that's painful.

"In the boxes, especially today what we did with the ball between the boxes we dominated the ball and took the control of the game from the start. We were not strong enough in the boxes and that's where we lost it.

"It's painful, we wanted to do the big thing, a big goal in the league and the Champions League. Massive disappointment but we have to stay strong and together. Take the lessons, take the pain and use it to come back stronger.

"We have to learn from this. We did a lot of good things but it's not enough. In front of goal is where games are decided and that's where we have to be sharper. We have to use this pain in a good way."

The mentality question with Arsenal is real. Even most of us fans didn’t expect us to overturn PSG but we actually played really well, exceptional in fact, but somehow we didn’t score when we really needed to early on. I said it before we must stand together and have a big summer and address the striker issue and a couple of other top players. Actually a Proud Gooner today, doing what we have done with the adversity we’ve had this season. Stand tall Gooners, we march on and collectively we must believe which we will do with some major squad strengthening

I don't think Arteta should be worried at all for his job, we got the furthest we have in a Champions league for my entire lifetime and played well. We were just beaten by one 6'6" beast between the sticks who basically saves every shot without massive intervention.

Difficult to take for Arsenal. Another semi-final they end up losing. It's becoming a little bit of a habit which is not great.

It just didn't happen for them in this game.

PSG, out of all the Champions League teams I've seen this season, they're in a special moment at this club.

There's a real feeling from me that this is going to be their time.

Arsenal turned up at a CL semi final and played like Stoke city under Pulis. Biggest consistent threat was Parteys long throws. I feel for Rice he was exceptional and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side, the rest may have been found out at the highest level.

Paris St-Germain manager Luis Enrique responding to Mikel Arteta's claims that Arsenal were the best team in the Champions League this season: "Mikel Arteta is a great friend, but I don't agree at all.

"They played in a clever way and they got the match to the right moment for them because they played in the way they wanted, and the way they love. But in the two legs we scored more than them and that is the most important thing in football.

"Arsenal played a great match, and we suffered, but we deserved to get to the final. They are a great team, but I repeat, we scored more goals, we played in a great way in the first leg, and the second half of the second leg was a different match, and we could have scored even more goals."

Absolutely gutted after last night - after those early chances I had hoped we could maintain pressure and score but it didn’t go our way. Mikel Arteta deserved credit but his job is definitely in the firing line. Absolutely don’t agree with his comments we were the best team in the CL, that has to go to one of the finalists

Thanks Graham. How about a Chelsea full-back? Ben Chilwell returns from his loan spell on June 1.

You can hate the idea, but you've got to admit when you close your eyes you can see Chilwell in an Arsenal kit.

It feels like Arsenal are one world class striker off being world beaters - so I predict instead they will sign three more left backs this Summer and on the last day of the window an ex-Chelsea wide-man on loan (maybe Pat Nevin this time).

Arsenal's bid to reach the Champions League final ended in failure as they were beaten by Paris St-Germain on a night of drama at Parc des Princes.

The Gunners' attempt to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit ran aground on another magnificent display by PSG's goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The Italian, outstanding in the first leg at Emirates Stadium, delivered a repeat performance with a series of stunning saves to keep Arsenal at bay early on.

He made an outstanding stop from Gabriel Martinelli, then an even better save from Martin Odegaard's low long-range drive as PSG were rocked back.

PSG cashed in to take the lead on the night when Fabian Ruiz collected Thomas Partey's headed clearance to flash a 20-yard finish past Arsenal keeper David Raya with the help of a slight deflection after 27 minutes.

In thrilling encounter, Donnarumma produced another stunning save to deny Bukayo Saka, before Raya got in on the act by saving Vitinha's poor spot-kick after Myles Lewis-Skelly was penalised for handball.

Partey was the culprit when PSG extended their lead after 72 minutes, losing possession before Achraf Hakimi scored on the turn.

Saka did finally beat Donnarumma with an angled finish four minutes later, but it was not enough to spark a comeback, although he then shot over an open goal.
