Iliman Ndiaye joined Everton from Marseille

New signing Iliman Ndiaye scored on his full debut as Everton put aside their poor start to the Premier League season to beat Doncaster and reach the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Having made substitute appearances in the defeats by Brighton and Tottenham, Senegal international Ndiaye - a £15m summer signing from Marseille - capped an impressive first start for the club by slotting in Everton’s second in the 74th minute.

He collected the ball 35 yards out, turned to drive at goal, skipped around defender Joseph Olowu and completed a calm finish.

His start was one of six changes made by manager Sean Dyche, including full debuts for Jesper Lindstrom and Jake O’Brien.

The Everton XI was still strong, however, and they struggled to break down Doncaster until their opener in the 53rd minute.

Dwight McNeil celebrated the goal, claiming Tim Iroegbunam’s shot from the edge of the box flicked his shin en route to the back of the net.

Ndiaye had set up Everton’s best chance in the first half – his strength created an opening for James Garner whose effort was blocked – and a superb second-half cross was not converted by striker Beto.

Beto eventually got his goal by converting in the 84th minute in a win that will lift the mood around Goodison Park.

League Two Doncaster acquitted themselves well with their best chance falling to Jack Senior in the first half but his effort was saved by Jordan Pickford.

Dyche, whose side are bottom of the Premier League after two matches with no goals scored and seven conceded, called the win a "mini step forward" and added: "We want all of the group to lay down markers. It's not just about new players, it's about every player.

"Can they keep evolving for the next challenge? That's what we've had to do many times. Challenges come, we have to go again and go again and go again, and there's another challenge at the moment."
