As Mark Chapman said on Match of the Day, "there was so much love from the Anfield crowd" for Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley.

Former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy said: "When you see a young player playing arguably the biggest game of his career, against one of the best players in Europe (Kylian Mbappe) and perform like that, it's incredible. I think he's got a great future."

It's a great start from Liverpool, but going back to the stat about becoming the fifth side to start with 5 wins and concede only 1 goal... none of those sides went on to win the Cup. Brave to bet against Liverpool in this form, but the point is the Final isn't in November is it?

  3. 'If we face Real in the later stages and beat them then, that would be a bigger statement'published at 09:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Liverpool manager Arne Slot: "I liked a lot of what I saw. I think we controlled the first half, creating a few chances, but I also thought we were still a bit sloppy.

"I said 'try to be even more patient, let the gaps open up instead of forcing them', and then it helps if for the first minutes after half-time we have total dominance. We scored the goal and then we were flying.

"It's always good to win a big game like this," he added. "For me, it would mean more if we go into the later stages of the tournament because this is such a different set-up in the Champions League that's it's difficult to judge how important these wins are.

"If we arrive in the last 16 or quarter-finals, face them again, and then we are able to beat them then that would be a bigger statement than this. But we are definitely happy with the win."

Everyone talked about this being an enormous week for Liverpool with Real Madrid and Manchester City coming to town and this felt like a big win.

They are cruising in the Premier League and in the Champions League.

Real Madrid didn't really lay a glove on Liverpool, who started the second half with such intensity and they really deserved the win.

  7. What is the voting period in the Fifa Best awards?published at 09:08 Greenwich Mean Time

Unlike other awards, such as the Ballon d'Or, which are done on a season-to-season basis, the Fifa Best awards are judged on calendar-year performances.

So, in theory, players could have a poor start to the season, or be ruled out by injury, but if they pick up form in the new year and have an impressive second half to the campaign they are in contention.

Summer tournaments, such as a World Cup, European Championships, Copa America or Olympics (in the women's game), will also have a say.

  8. Who won at the Fifa Best awards in 2023?published at 09:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    • The Best Fifa Men's Player: Lionel Messi (PSG/Inter Miami & Argentina)
    • The Best Fifa Women's Player: Aitana Bonmati (Barcelona & Spain)
    • The Best Fifa Men's Goalkeeper: Ederson (Man City & Brazil)
    • The Best Fifa Women's Goalkeeper: Mary Earps (Man Utd & England)
    • The Best Fifa Men's Coach: Pep Guardiola (Man City)
    • The Best Fifa Women's Coach: Sarina Wiegman(England)
    • Fifa Fair Play award: Brazil national team
    • Fifa Puskas Award (awarded for best goal): Guilherme Madruga for Botafogo-SP against Novorizontino
    • Fifa Special Award for an Outstanding Career Achievement: Marta (Brazil)

There are also awards for men's and women's teams of the year (more on those shortly) and a fans award.

  9. Who votes in the Fifa Best awards?published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time

    It's fairly simple.

The awards are voted for by national team coaches and captains, as well expert journalists and fans on fifa.com.

That is one difference from the Ballon d'Or, won by Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri in October, where just journalists from each country have a vote.

Lionel Messi won last year's award for the best men's player, claiming it for a third time.

  11. Villa disallowed goal 'a sign of the times'published at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

    Jacob Tanswell
Aston Villa writer for the Athletic on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily

I think on first showing you'd probably say it was a free-kick because goalkeepers are very protected like Ollie Watkins alludes to but if you look at the replay it is the most gentle of nudges from Diego Carlos. The keeper does spill it and he does make a real hash of it.

I think VAR could have intervened but it would have been a brave decision to go against the referee's call.

It's just a sign of the times - goalkeepers come out, they claim crosses and when they drop it they fall to the ground and most of the time they tend to get the free-kick.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins speaking to TNT Sports on the disallowed goal: "I think it was soft. Maybe in the Premier League, it's a goal. But in Europe, the goalkeepers are protected a lot. It's one of them. I thought we scored. But to be fair, this game had a 0-0 written all over it."

On the refereeing: "Obviously, I have to be careful talking about the referee, but it's different in this competition. We are used to it now. Sometimes it goes against you and sometimes it goes in your favour."

On the result: "It's a positive result. The fans want to see a lot of goals and we do ourselves too, but the most important thing was that we didn't lose tonight.

"Juventus are a massive team and they played well. We kept them out and now we move onto the weekend."

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports about Morgan Rogers' disallowed goal in stoppage time: "I am very happy because we won a point. We played a very competitive match. We were dominating the match to try to get three points.

"The last action is clear. It's the interpretation of the referee. We know in England, it's 80% not a foul, but in Europe, maybe not. For me it was harsh. In England, I know it's not a foul usually, because it was a very soft contact. But in Europe, it could be foul.

"I think the referee, in the beginning, he was giving it as a goal. We have to accept his decision."

  15. 'Brilliant goal' by Maeda keeps Celtic in hunt for qualificationpublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time

    Celtic 1-1 Club Brugge

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said that communication was an issue for Cameron Carter-Vickers' own goal, that the players couldn't hear each other amid the Celtic Park atmosphere.

He later pulled off a fine save while Daizen Maeda equalised with what MOTD pundit Danny Murphy described as a "brilliant goal".

"[He showed] great skill," he added. "He doesn't even need to look at the goal, it's just a nice caress into the far corner.

"They're in a position where they can qualify, they've got some big games coming up."

  16. Celtic still very much on course - Rodgerspublished at 08:27 Greenwich Mean Time

    Celtic 1-1 Club Brugge

    Celtic

Next up for Celtic is a trip to Croatia to take on Dinamo Zagreb on 10 December followed by a home game with Young Boys and a visit to Aston Villa.

"We're still very much on course to get to where we want to get to," said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

"You want to win but I've been here enough times to have lost a game like that. We showed a real strong mentality and we kept pushing right to the very end.

"We weren't at our level in the first half. Sometimes a game like that can get away from you, but it didn't. We stayed with it, showed that determination, showed that mentality, never to quit, to keep going. And then we were much better, much freer in the second half."

On Cameron Carter-Vickers' own goal, Rodgers added: "Mistakes happen and it was just unfortunate. He's played that pass a million times and it's gone back and then we've been able to play forward.

"But he's a really, really tough character. He's a great guy, he picked himself up.

"He was really strong and aggressive again in the game and got on with it and had a real bravery in the second half, because he was the one carrying the ball forward for us to start the attack."

  17. 'Maybe Bellingham didn't hit the level people expect'published at 08:19 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Going into the Euros in the summer, everyone was really excited about Jude Bellingham's form and he dipped a little bit, as did a lot of England players.

When you are as high profile a player as he is then you come to be judged by your performances and maybe he didn't hit the level that people have come to expect.

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

It was also a difficult night for Real Madrid's England midfielder Jude Bellingham.

He failed to have a single shot at Anfield, but did create a Madrid-high two chances for his team-mates.

His 59 touches were also the most for any visiting player, but five of his 38 passes went astray.

  19. Bradley's tackle is one for the purists...published at 08:04 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe was also flattened by a textbook sliding tackle by Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley, which got the Anfield crowd on their feet.

Remember when Mbappe was being linked with both Real Madrid and Liverpool? Real might have won that battle but, right now, I don't think the Reds are that fussed about missing out.

  20. Mbappe fails to firepublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Obviously his second-half penalty miss is the big talking point around Kylian Mbappe this morning, but on the whole it was another disappointing night for the Frenchman.

Without Vinicius Jr because of injury, Mbappe had licence to roam and play from his preferred left wing when he wanted to, but he failed to produce any moments of quality.

He had the least touches out of any Real Madrid or Liverpool midfielder or forward to play the entire game, while his passing and dribbling stats leave room for improvement.

He also failed to create any chances for his team-mates.
