Summary

  1. Who votes in the Fifa Best awards?published at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time

    It's fairly simple.

The awards are voted for by national team coaches and captains, as well expert journalists and fans on fifa.com.

That is one difference from the Ballon d'Or, won by Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri in October, where just journalists from each country have a vote.

Lionel Messi won last year's award for the best men's player, claiming it for a third time.

  3. Villa disallowed goal 'a sign of the times'published at 08:50 Greenwich Mean Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

    Jacob Tanswell

I think on first showing you'd probably say it was a free-kick because goalkeepers are very protected like Ollie Watkins alludes to but if you look at the replay it is the most gentle of nudges from Diego Carlos. The keeper does spill it and he does make a real hash of it.

I think VAR could have intervened but it would have been a brave decision to go against the referee's call.

It's just a sign of the times - goalkeepers come out, they claim crosses and when they drop it they fall to the ground and most of the time they tend to get the free-kick.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins speaking to TNT Sports on the disallowed goal: "I think it was soft. Maybe in the Premier League, it's a goal. But in Europe, the goalkeepers are protected a lot. It's one of them. I thought we scored. But to be fair, this game had a 0-0 written all over it."

On the refereeing: "Obviously, I have to be careful talking about the referee, but it's different in this competition. We are used to it now. Sometimes it goes against you and sometimes it goes in your favour."

On the result: "It's a positive result. The fans want to see a lot of goals and we do ourselves too, but the most important thing was that we didn't lose tonight.

"Juventus are a massive team and they played well. We kept them out and now we move onto the weekend."

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to TNT Sports about Morgan Rogers' disallowed goal in stoppage time: "I am very happy because we won a point. We played a very competitive match. We were dominating the match to try to get three points.

"The last action is clear. It's the interpretation of the referee. We know in England, it's 80% not a foul, but in Europe, maybe not. For me it was harsh. In England, I know it's not a foul usually, because it was a very soft contact. But in Europe, it could be foul.

"I think the referee, in the beginning, he was giving it as a goal. We have to accept his decision."

  7. 'Brilliant goal' by Maeda keeps Celtic in hunt for qualificationpublished at 08:31 Greenwich Mean Time

    Celtic 1-1 Club Brugge

Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel said that communication was an issue for Cameron Carter-Vickers' own goal, that the players couldn't hear each other amid the Celtic Park atmosphere.

He later pulled off a fine save while Daizen Maeda equalised with what MOTD pundit Danny Murphy described as a "brilliant goal".

"[He showed] great skill," he added. "He doesn't even need to look at the goal, it's just a nice caress into the far corner.

"They're in a position where they can qualify, they've got some big games coming up."

    Celtic

Next up for Celtic is a trip to Croatia to take on Dinamo Zagreb on 10 December followed by a home game with Young Boys and a visit to Aston Villa.

"We're still very much on course to get to where we want to get to," said Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers.

"You want to win but I've been here enough times to have lost a game like that. We showed a real strong mentality and we kept pushing right to the very end.

"We weren't at our level in the first half. Sometimes a game like that can get away from you, but it didn't. We stayed with it, showed that determination, showed that mentality, never to quit, to keep going. And then we were much better, much freer in the second half."

On Cameron Carter-Vickers' own goal, Rodgers added: "Mistakes happen and it was just unfortunate. He's played that pass a million times and it's gone back and then we've been able to play forward.

"But he's a really, really tough character. He's a great guy, he picked himself up.

"He was really strong and aggressive again in the game and got on with it and had a real bravery in the second half, because he was the one carrying the ball forward for us to start the attack."

Going into the Euros in the summer, everyone was really excited about Jude Bellingham's form and he dipped a little bit, as did a lot of England players.

When you are as high profile a player as he is then you come to be judged by your performances and maybe he didn't hit the level that people have come to expect.

It was also a difficult night for Real Madrid's England midfielder Jude Bellingham.

He failed to have a single shot at Anfield, but did create a Madrid-high two chances for his team-mates.

His 59 touches were also the most for any visiting player, but five of his 38 passes went astray.

Kylian Mbappe was also flattened by a textbook sliding tackle by Liverpool right-back Conor Bradley, which got the Anfield crowd on their feet.

Remember when Mbappe was being linked with both Real Madrid and Liverpool? Real might have won that battle but, right now, I don't think the Reds are that fussed about missing out.

  12. Mbappe fails to firepublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Obviously his second-half penalty miss is the big talking point around Kylian Mbappe this morning, but on the whole it was another disappointing night for the Frenchman.

Without Vinicius Jr because of injury, Mbappe had licence to roam and play from his preferred left wing when he wanted to, but he failed to produce any moments of quality.

He had the least touches out of any Real Madrid or Liverpool midfielder or forward to play the entire game, while his passing and dribbling stats leave room for improvement.

He also failed to create any chances for his team-mates.

You look at the goalkeeping position - Caoimhin Kelleher has always been outstanding, he's got a brilliant temperament. In many respects it was not a great surprise to see him save a penalty.

  14. Does Kelleher need to play more games?published at 07:54 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Caoimhin Kelleher has patiently waited for years for his chance at Anfield - but has been behind Alisson in the pecking order, and in the summer Liverpool announced a deal to sign Valencia and Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, now 24, in a deal worth up to £29m at the end of the season.

Kelleher has kept five clean sheets in 10 games for Liverpool this season - only conceding seven goals.

But Liverpool boss Arne Slot has already made clear that "the moment Alisson will be fit he will be our first goalkeeper".

Speaking after the Real Madrid game, Slot said: "Kelleher was outstanding. He has done remarkable for us," before adding, "just like our other goalkeeper who has been remarkable too."

In September, Kelleher said: "I've made it clear in the last few years that I want to go and be a number one and play week in, week out," he said.

"The club's made that decision to get another goalkeeper and from the outside looking in, it looks like they've made a decision to go in a different direction."

    Kylian Mbappe look away now.

After Alexis Mac Allister's opener, he had the chance to draw Real Madrid level at 1-1 from the penalty spot but was denied as Caoimhin Kelleher saved a penalty for the second successive game - although Adam Armstrong converted the rebound during Sunday's Premier League win at Southampton.

Kelleher has now saved three of his four penalties faced for Liverpool in all competitions. The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper also saved one against Finland on international duty earlier in the month so is in red-hot form from the spot.

  16. Liverpool's wretched run against Real Madrid... until Wednesday nightpublished at 07:40 Greenwich Mean Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Liverpool's win over Real Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night ended an eight-game winless streak for the Reds against the 15-time winners. Here's how they had fared in those games:

    • Group stage: Real Madrid 1-0 Liverpool (4 November, 2014)
    • Final: Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool (26 May, 2018)
    • Quarter-final: Real Madrid 3-1 Liverpool (6 April, 2021)

    • Liverpool are just the fifth side to win their opening five games of a Champions League campaign and concede no more than one goal after AC Milan in 1992-93, Juventus in 2004-05, Atletico Madrid in 2016-17 and Paris St-Germain in 2017-18.
    • Arne Slot's side have kept four successive clean sheets in the Champions League for the first time since April 2018. Across the Champions League and European Cup, they hae only had longer such runs in March 1984 and December 2005 (both five games).
    • Real Madrid have lost three of their past four group games in the Champions League, as many as in their previous 24 such games (W19 D2).
    • They have also lost successive group games in the same campaign for the first time since October/November 2008 against Juventus.
    • Real Madrid are the first reigning champions in Champions League history to lose as many as three of their first five games of a campaign (W2).

Champions League highlights: Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid

Arne Slot can now add banishing memories of some of the most painful episodes in Liverpool's recent history to his list of achievements in the stunning start to his Anfield tenure.

Real Madrid were predecessor Jurgen Klopp's nemesis among his many successes, agonisingly losing Champions League finals to the Spanish giants in 2018 and 2022, as well as falling to them on two other occasions in the past seven seasons.

Slot shifted the previously immovable Real Madrid object in superb fashion, ending a sequence of six losses and two draws against the 15-time winners in what was the biggest statement of intent since this understated Dutch coach succeeded Klopp.

Klopp left Slot an outstanding squad to work with but, with his more measured but still thrillingly potent approach, a remarkable record of 17 wins, one defeat and one draw is a remarkable testimony to the way he has gone about his work.

With every game, every win, the sense that something special is brewing at Liverpool under Slot - the antithesis of his animated, fist-pumping, iconic predecessor - grows.

Slot’s style may be more low-key but that statistic alone illustrates how Liverpool's fans have hardly been able to see the join since he replaced Klopp.

What was billed as an impossible task to replace the beloved, not to mention very successful Klopp, is being made to look like a walk in the park.

  19. MOTD pundits disagree over Villa's disallowed goalpublished at 07:23 Greenwich Mean Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

Aston Villa's Spanish boss Unai Emery believed Morgan Rogers' disallowed goal would have been awarded in domestic competition.

"In England the interpretation is different," he said. "The English referees, when actions like that, the interpretation is a clear no foul, but in Europe that interpretation is different.

"When the action happened, I was thinking here in Europe it’s a foul. In England, not."

The Match of the Day pundits disagreed over the decision. Thomas Hitzlsperger felt there was not enough contact from Diego Carlos on the Juventus goalkeeper to make it a foul.

Julien Laurens said he led with his arm and it was enough to unsettle Michele di Gregorio, while Danny Murphy added that "it is a bit soft" but he "gets why it was given".

  20. Villa denied victory over Juventus by late VAR verdictpublished at 07:17 Greenwich Mean Time

    Aston Villa 0-0 Juventus

Aston Villa were denied victory over Juventus in the Champions League as Morgan Rogers' stoppage-time goal was ruled out.

Rogers' smart finish was disallowed when the video assistant referee deemed Diego Carlos to have fouled goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio in the air.

The disappointment means Villa's winless run has reached seven matches.

Unai Emery's side ended a four-game losing run with a draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday, but they have not tasted victory since a 2-0 win over Bologna five weeks ago.

Villa enjoyed the better of the chances against Juventus but could not find a goal against the team who boast the best defensive record in Serie A.

Juventus had their moments, with Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez producing a superb save when he palmed away Francisco Conceicao's shot at the near post.

The Villans sit ninth in the Champions League table while Juventus are 19th and without a win in their last three games in Europe.
