Lens are unbeaten in their two previous UEFA Champions League games against Arsenal, drawing at home (1-1) and winning away (1-0) in 1998-99. This is the first meeting between the sides since the 1999-00 UEFA Cup semi-final, with Arsenal winning 3-1 on aggregate (1-0 home, 2-1 away).
Arsenal's first ever UEFA Champions League game was away to Lens, 25 years and 17 days ago. Marc Overmars gave the Gunners the lead, before Tony Vaireilles' last minute equaliser for the French side.
Arsenal have lost just one of their 14 away games against French sides in all competitions (W8 D5), going down 3-1 at Rennes in the UEFA Europa League in March 2019. The Gunners are unbeaten in eight such visits in the UEFA Champions League (W6 D2), though did lose the 2006 final in Paris.
