UEFA Champions League
All competitions
This is the first ever competitive meeting between Sporting Braga and Real Madrid. The only Spanish team Braga have ever previously faced is Sevilla, losing 2-0 in the 2006-07 UEFA Cup, before winning both legs in qualifying for the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League.
Real Madrid have only lost one of their 12 UEFA Champions League games against Portuguese sides (W9 D2), going down 2-1 at FC Porto in October 1999. This is their first such meeting since facing Sporting CP in the 2016-17 group stages (W2).
Real Madrid have won on each of their last three trips to face Portuguese sides in European competition, beating FC Porto in 2002 and 2003 and Sporting CP in 2016. Prior to this, they’d only won two of their first seven away games against Portuguese opponents in Europe (D1 L4).
Following their victory over 1. FC Union Berlin last time out, Braga have already equalled their win tally (1) in the UEFA Champions League from their previous tournament appearance in 2012-13 (W1 L5). The last time they won consecutive games in the competition was in the 2010-11 group stage (a run of three).
Real Madrid have the highest win percentage of any team in European Cup/UEFA Champions League history, winning 59.9% of their matches (min. 100 games - 285/476). Ahead of their first such meeting with Braga, they’ve beaten 107 different teams across the two competitions – already the most of any side.
Jude Bellingham has scored and assisted in three different games in the UEFA Champions League, including last time out for Real Madrid against Napoli. He’s the first midfielder aged under-21 to do so on as many as three occasions in the competition since Cesc Fàbregas between 2006 and 2007 (3).
Aged 35 years and 184 days, Castro scored the winning goal for Braga against 1. FC Union Berlin on MD2. He’s the second-oldest Portuguese player ever to score in the UEFA Champions League, after Cristiano Ronaldo (36).
In the 2022-23 and 2023-24 editions of the UEFA Champions League combined, no player has been involved in more goal-ending sequences from open play than Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior (15). Indeed, he’s also been involved in the most shot-ending sequences from open play in this period (86).
Jude Bellingham has been directly involved in three goals in two UEFA Champions League games for Real Madrid (two goals, one assist), scoring in both outings so far. The only previous player to score in his first three appearances for the club in the competition was Christian Karembeu in the 1997-98 campaign (3).
Bruma has either scored (2) or assisted (1) three of Braga’s four goals in the UEFA Champions League this season, while he’s also created the most chances (5) and completed the most take-ons (6) of any Braga player so far.
