Sunday's Old Firm derby in the League Cup semi-finals has been mentioned by Martin O'Neill.

It's a fearsome fixture for any new manager to contemplate, but surely one that O'Neill would relish?

It's important to note that, while Celtic's new interim manager has spoken with TalkSport, for whom he is a regular pundit, O'Neill has not yet held an official news conference since taking the post.

His first match in charge is a Scottish Premiership fixture against Falkirk on Wednesday.

It is also important to note that BBC Sport has contacted former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers for comment - he is yet to respond.

But first, a final word from Martin O'Neill, taken from his interview with TalkSport, about working with one of those names in the frame for the permanent job - Shaun Maloney: "Shaun and I go back years and years, when he was a young player with me. He is experienced in management now and he's worked with lots of really good coaches."

Former Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is being heavily linked with a return as permanent manager, but the out-of-work Australian is not the only name in the frame.

Others to top of the bookmakers' odds include Martin O'Neill's interim assistant Shaun Maloney, former Celtic striker Robbie Keane, former Manchester United bosses Erik Ten Hag and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Wales manager Craig Bellamy and former Shelbourne head coach Damien Duff.

Celtic's new interim boss Martin O'Neill was giving nothing much away, in his interview with TalkSport, when asked about who should be appointed long term: "Interim does mean that to me. Absolutely. It's really as simple as that.

"Celtic are looking for, I would have assumed, a young coach coming in now who has a proven ability and would be wanting to pull the club forward now from their position as it stands.

"That's how I would view it and I suppose if I was a Celtic fan, I would absolutely see it."

Martin O'Neill speaking to TalkSport about facing Falkirk on Wednesday night, and then Rangers in the League Cup semi-finals on Sunday: "If I'd seen the fixture list, I possibly then wouldn't have taken it. That is supposed to be a joke, Jim!

"It is what it is and it's come as a bit of a shock. I think you can hear from my voice, as much as anything else."

More from Martin O'Neill, speaking to TalkSport, about the opportunity to manage Celtic again: "I think I said that to you a long time ago. I can't emphasise this enough, this is short term, until a permanent manager is appointed.

"I think that Celtic will be searching around, as I said to you, for that young manager with proven ability who has got a bit of a track record. I will just sit in there and keep the seat warm for him."

Martin O'Neill has told TalkSport about his shock at being offered the interim position by Celtic: "I took a gasp of breath and thought, is this real or surreal?

"It's difficult really to turn down somebody who gave you the job in the first place when he had really some great options a way back 25 years ago.

"So from that viewpoint, maybe by the time that I pulled myself off the floor, I probably thought then maybe I should do it.

"I think they were probably stunned by the news that Brendan left and as a consequence, they maybe might be obviously seeking a permanent manager."

Interestingly, former Scotland midfielder Paul Lambert told BBC Radio 5 Live much the same thing when asked what the job description should be for the new Celtic manager.

"Winning games" was also his mantra...

Martin O'Neill repeatedly told TalkSport that his appointment as interim manager at Celtic was "short term", but sidestepped questions about exactly how long he expected his tenure to be.

O'Neill instead preferred to focus on his "short-term" mission of winning games.

Brendan Rodgers has not yet spoken since his resignation as Celtic manager on Monday night.

But we are just about to hear from his interim successor, Martin O'Neill, who has been speaking with Talksport.

On Monday, O'Neill was on the radio station talking up Hearts' chances of winning the Scottish title this season.

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about the statement released by Dermot Desmond:

“I’ve seen it before, and I’ve heard boards feel like this before, but they don’t generally say it like that.

“It was an extraordinary statement. But if Brendan lasted this season I would have been absolutely staggered and amazed, unless it was an incredibly successful season.

“Boy, would you love to hear Brendan’s line on this!”

Dermot Desmond's 551-word statement that followed Brendan Rodgers' resignation blew this story wide open.

Ange Postecoglou had only just moved into his new flat when he was giving his marching orders at Nottingham Forest.

Only 39 days after being appointed, the 60-year-old became the shortest-serving permanent Premier League manager.

He did not even have time to take his post-match news conference, Forest acting only 17 minutes after the final whistle of the 3-0 Premier League defeat by Chelsea.

Postecoglou, having replaced Nuno Espirito Santo on 9 September, was supposed to take the club to the next level and to their first major trophy since 1990.

But, after an eighth game without a win, Postecoglou left Forest as their shortest-serving permanent manager - less than Alex McLeish, who lasted 40 days.
