When facing a Premier League side in the third round of the FA Cup, Middlesbrough haven’t progressed since a 1-0 win at Bradford City in 2000-01. They’ve gone out of five such ties since then, including a 5-1 home loss to Brighton last season.
Since beating Wycombe Wanderers in a third round replay in January 2016, Aston Villa have lost each of their last eight matches in the FA Cup. No side has ever lost nine in a row in the competition while playing in the top two divisions.
Since returning to the Premier League in 2019, Aston Villa have gone out of the FA Cup at the third round stage in all four seasons. The only consistent top-flight side to have gone out at this stage in five consecutive campaigns are Blackpool, seven in a row between 1960-61 and 1966-67.
